To think that there's something more to these famous women's dramatic weight losses?

Over the last year or so, I've seen Adele, Rebel Wilson and Kelly Osbourne dramatically lose weight. They look amazing, and completely different. It's in their faces too. Is there some new kind of weight loss surgery going around, or is it really just diet and exercise? I love all these women no matter what their size, and I struggle with weight loss myself and admire them for being healthy and looking incredibly fit. But is something going on that's not available to the masses? (no pun intended)

I have occasionally watched the real housewives. Can’t remember of where but I remember a scene where there was a celebration and a large cake was brought in and one of the housewives sniffing it to get her fill and saying she wasn’t going to eat it.

Am I bad for laughing at Greenlandthemovie? I knew that she’d try to turn it into a ‘who’s the thinnest?’ contest. Like most people with a complex about what they eat.

As for suggesting that I ‘get some weight off’: no thanks. I am very happy as my fit, slim and healthy self.

No, you're wonderful for laughing at posters, telling them to calm down and saying that they froth at the mouth. Where's your fan club?

Is this something that gives you pleasure? Mocking people and trying to upset them?

I'm not that "thin", but this is very sport specific.

I think Kelly Osborne has admitted she had bariatric surgery. To be honest I assumed this is the case with all the celebs mentioned in the OP.

It is a bit sad that some of these people feel they need to hide it and pretend it's all down to their new found self-disciplined lifestyle. I think that message makes ordinary people struggling to lose weight feel even worse for not succeeding like these celebs "appear" to.

There is also the possibility that the new "wonder drug" that's been in the news in the last few days may have a role. In the DM today Sarah Vine writes about taking it (it's prescribed for type 2 diabetes) and she's lost some significant weight taking it.

I have an eating disorder that I have had on and off since I was about 7 (from memory, it probably started younger) so being obsessed with the numbers (making them divisible by 3), not going into double digits during my period when I seem to put on weight, monk fasting, obsessing over the calories in medication I’m taking, laxative abuse to feel ‘empty’, I could go on.

These women probably did it in a much healthier way than I have, and probably don’t have any mental scarring from it (whichever route they took). Not really sure what my point is but I guess they just did it through either surgery or just low cal and exercise; I don’t know.

I think a lot of it is personal trainers and personal chefs. I think a lot of the willpower and mindset people talk about is about not seeing food as a treat or a reward. But if I had a personal chef I might still do that if I could click my fingers and have smoked salmon and caviar, or a beautiful rare seared tuna steak, or beautifully prepared grilled squid, or a tropical salad, or my favourite vegetables like artichokes and asparagus. They are all nicer than a donut or fish and chips when I'm having a stressful day and much healthier. You only have to eat out at a top restaurant to know that a good chef can make just vegetables taste wonderful. But that's not an option for most of us, in terms of skill, time or expense.

Also, in terms of giving ourselves a reward, food or drink is the go to solution for a lot of us. Famous people maybe have more strategies to overcome this. They can give themselves a reward by buying £400 suede boots, planning a weekend away in the South of France (well, normally) or going for a spin on their jet ski. Most of us need to settle for the donut.

Exactly. Because chances are they still have junk food at home for the rest of the family. And even the most delicious low-calorie meal will not be as filling or satisfying as a large pizza, or curry, or dinner and dessert and chocolate. So no matter what route they chose to take to lose weight, will power is still critical.

And if someone would like to bring up the mental health reasons why someone might get very overweight, then that would apply to celebrities too.

So yes, it may be easier to lose weight if you have lots of money, but if it were THAT easy then every rich person would be slim.

My face changes LOADS when I put on weight or lose it. As soon as I put on 3-4 lbs, you can really tell just by my face.

Whether it’s surgery or a team of dieticians, chefs, fitness trainers etc - the reason their faces always look so well is that they have filler to plump out where dramatic, fast weight loss drains your face. You can see it clearly with Adele. She looks fabulous, so whatevs. But she has definitely had a bit of ‘aesthetic’ work on her face since losing the weight.

My friend also had one and still has to work very hard on maintaining that weight loss.

A certain amount of loss is pretty inevitable with the preparation for the op and recovery, but once past those stages weight loss isn't automatic, you still have to make the right choices of what you put in your mouth and control the portion. It is still possible to binge on cake and crisps as they slip right through. it is still possible to eat above your TDEE in calories with these ops and therefore gain weight, and you still have to work on not doing so.

Through her instagram documenting the loss, I noticed a friend of hers who has had both a vsg and a bypass but managed to still gain 30lbs in two months due to falling off the wagon with alcohol consumption and binging on 'slider foods' (the aforementioned cake and crisps, slide right through, easy to eat too much off even for bariatric patients)

To make the operation work, you still have to work at it and follow all the guidelines. It's not a magic solution that means you don't have to work at it or think about it anymore. Anyone who has had an op is not cheating or having an easy time of it.

True. But I think for a lot of people it's easier to say that surgery is the easier route and because they can't afford it they can't lose weight.

I've been on 1,200 since August (not ages but still a decent length of time I believe) and am now on 1,000 because I have plateaued. I'm now a size 8/10 (from a fuller 10) and while I'm not starving, I could easily eat more. But I'd rather finish a meal and still be a little hungry, than be unhappy about my weight. Any time. Calorie counting, if done properly, works for most people. Usually it's just a case of whether someone wants to be slimmer more than they want another biscuit.

Whatever your financial status it takes work and effort to loose weight. And yes, non wealthy people do it too.

To say oh they did it because they are rich and famous is bollocks.

Yes people do it without entourage. I don’t need one to low carb and exercise.

I think it is dumb for people to eat 800 calories unless they have an eating disorder... I'm a recovering anorexic and trust me 800 can make you very sick! It's not healthy at all. And you can lose weight on 1200+ so it's just impatient and youre more likely to yoyo your weight if you go down to 800. 800 is less than your body needs in a coma...

I was thinking this. I havent even contemplated 800kcal/day being a "normal " amount of food since recovering from an ED. I've been a healthy weight for over 15 years and I dont count calories, but if I wanted to lose weight I definitely would be thinking about more than 800kcal.

I think a lot of Hollywood or a list celebs are coy about how they either lost weight, or maintain (usually a very low) weight.
The amount of interviews ive seen with famous people where they allegedly maintain their size 0 figure by "running around after their children" ....which is obviously BS - mainly because most of them would have nannies anyway, and whilst toddlers are always on the go, it's not as if they are running marathons!
It would be more refreshing/realistic to hear people say "its bloody hard work to stay this thin, I only eat 3 lettuce leaves, 2 almonds and a mouthful of salmon per day, and work out for 2 hours" because in reality a lot of them will be on very restrictive or low calorie diets to maintain their figure, and it's really not because they're naturally thin by running around after their kids!!

I've lost over 8 stone in the last 2 years by following one of WW's previous plans and walking only. I'd been overweight since my teens but I hit 45 and something just clicked and here I am - 47 and 8 stone or thereabouts

No one can help with will power.but if you want to do it and are skint then there is plenty of help available. From slimming clubs, to park runs to walking groups. All either free or little cost

You don’t need to be rich to get help.

I find all the chat of “quick fixes” and “what do you eat in a day” really depressing. It’s not a secret to eat less and move more, but people seem to believe that faddy diets work. All the “I do slimming world / weight watchers” threads plus the people who think that walking a few miles a day will be a big factor in weight loss. It doesn’t work, those programmes are a massive con whose business model are designed for people to fail and come back time and again.^

SW and WW will work if followed properly because you will be consuming less calories than before. It's not rocket science. Anyone who cuts down to, say, 1200 calories a day and says they're not losing weight either has some underlying issue or simply isn't counting calories properly.

I disagree. Any plan which has “free food” that you can eat as much as you like and it doesn’t count towards your calories is setting people up to fail by falsely making them think they’re eating less than they are.

No wonder people sign up for life time memberships as they’ve lost and gained the same few lbs many times

They could have gone for a complete lifestyle change: not the daily 800 calorie madness described upthread, but moving away from processed foods, cutting down sugar, exercising etc to alter their body’s responses to food and reduce their insulin levels. That would have been ‘life saving’ too.

Do you not think that the majority of people who embark on a weightloss journey do not consider it "a lifestyle change"? Every time I try to lose weight and become healthier I do " a lifestyle change". But it is still "a diet" whether it is for the rest of my life or not, I will always be "on a diet" because to not be would lead me to gain weight. Some people just like crap food more than others, or are more hungry than others. I was a slim, even skinny, teenager and young adult, I enjoyed all foods and also chocolate and stuff but not excessively, could take or leave most stuff, got full pretty quickly and naturally intermittent fasted as my natural eating pattern. I hit 27 and it was like a switch went off inside me and I just couldn't get enough food in me. I have always cooked my own food from scratch and it's balanced but the volumes I could then eat were immense, there was just no filling me up. So I gained weight. Losing weight requires severe portion control for me, I am constantly hungry. I could eat 20 portions of broccoli and still not be full and definitely not satisfied, but 20 portions of potatoes wouldn't fill me up either. My off switch has just disappeared, and almost over night and I have no idea how to switch it back on. And it is really hard being constantly hungry so sometimes I slip and I can gain a stone easily within a couple of weeks. I also lose it again though but only by being hungry.

And yes, I've tried low carb, keto, blood sugar diets, etc etc.

@greenlandthemovie don't believe you, sorry. Those pbs are the same as my DH who is a club runner who regularly places in the top 10 of amateur events of 5-600 people. Times like that are the absolute top speed of non professional running for women, and those women eat a lot.
