I was very shocked , and horrified that it was reported as a matter of fact with no real comment
We are giving away our civil rights so easily,I hope it is as easy to get them back

IDKNABYBIF22 · 09/02/2021 22:47

@Floridaflipflops

So fuck the other 2% then?

Oh do calm down, and get off your high horse!

People are entitled to vent, and be pissed off, and make comparisons to what all this shit we're going through feels like.

It's tough for many, so bore off with your finger wagging, and sanctimonious, snarky comments.[/quote]
Loving the irony of your imagining of my mood none of your business) and then telling me what to do.

Finger wagging ? Yep that's what you're doing
Sanctimonious? That too

And if people make frankly ludicrous comparisons, then they run the risk of being pulled up. This is AIBU.

ichundich · 09/02/2021 22:51

The fact that many people have seemingly no issue with a sentence that is so completely out of proportion to the crime shows how in the past 11 months we have been brainwashed into accepting all these extrreme measures 'for the sake of getting the pandemic under control'. Only it hasn't worked! It would have made sense to close the borders last March. Now this virus is here to stay and we can't afford to put our lives on hold forever ffs.

Wildswim · 09/02/2021 22:53

God knows what people who actually live in totalitarian regimes would make of some of the comments on this thread

Actually I've read posts from people who lived in the former Soviet Union who have expressed amazement and concern about what's going on, and have pointed out warning signs.

Lastfreakinglegs · 09/02/2021 22:55

What I’ve found alarming is the amount of people enjoying living in an authoritarian society. They just love it and expect every one else to lap it up too.

Absifuckingloutly.

When Klaus Schwab introduces the president of China as a role model at the World Economic Forum 2 weeks ago we should all be as fucking worried as hell.

This pandemic, however created, has laid the foundations for a potential rise in capitalist driven fascism.

Listen - you can’t drag an economy to hell to save every last person. People do die. In fact dementia is STILL the biggest killer in the U.K. yet no one gives a fuck about that! The lockdowns were never about that. It was about not letting the NHS get overwhelmed. They didn’t.

So whilst every single covid death is awful, so is a family being made homeless because they can’t pay the rent due to loss of work, so is a child that needs to go to school because they are getting battered at home but can’t is awful, a person going bankrupt because their business is closed down is awful, a single parent mother losing her job because of covid closures and having bailiffs tormenting her is awful. A family divorcing because the parents have fallen out because of money worries is awful, children and teenagers having mental health problems because they are stuck on screens isolated all day is awful.

Everything matters not just covid deaths. The average age of covid death is 85!

We’re all not lucky enough to WFH/be on benefits/nice fat pension/paid off mortgage - a lot of our lives are going to shit whilst people shout from their ivory towers that we must obey!!!

IDKNABYBIF22 · 09/02/2021 23:00

@Wildswim

Oh get a grip, we're being told we can still go on holiday where we like, but might face a penalty if we don't quarantine if needed and lie about it. Absolutely no parallels to living in the Soviet Union.

ichundich · 09/02/2021 23:03

[Actually I've read posts from people who lived in the former Soviet Union who have expressed amazement and concern about what's going on, and have pointed out warning signs.] @WildSwim I grew up in a Soviet country, and I don't think the comparison is far-fetched sadly!

I think its chilling too and I'm shocked. Once governments take liberties away, and they've made new laws to let them do whatever they want, they dont give them back. First...its lockdown til halfway through February, then March, now no summer holidays, Autumn til we can travel abroad...its never going to stop. This government are abusing their powers in my opinion. All the new variants, well, it'll be one after another after another and then another. All viruses mutate, it will mutate for ever.
Now they want to give out prison sentences, its crazy. They are controlling us by fear. I've stuck to the rules closely but today, I've just about had enough.
Brexit is causing so many companies hardship, my DS lives in Europe and its breaking my heart that I might not see him til the Autumn or beyond if Hancock gets his way. I just cant stand this government and their reactive policies one day longer.
Sorry to rant.

twelly · 09/02/2021 23:08

As I live in a democratic country I believe I need to obey and follow the rules the government has put in place. However I do not agree with much of the government policy - I believe many people are probably in the same position。 It would be wrong to assume that compliance and agreement are the same.

fluffi · 09/02/2021 23:09

Ten years for telling a lie about where you have been on holiday. Bloody scary especially since 98% of the population can fight the virus off and we are seeing a quick decline in cases already due to the rapid roll out of vaccines, In fact we are already at October’s level of cases.

Why is it bloody scary? No-one should lie about where they've been on holiday to or travelled during a pandemic.

IDKNABYBIF22 · 09/02/2021 23:12

@Floridaflipflops

Six of the staff at my hospital have died from covid, the oldest was 68, the youngest was 46. It's not just old people who die. And if the NHS is overwhelmed with covid cases, then younger people will die from none covid causes as a result of not being able to have their cancer treatment, no ICU bed after accident etc.

This thread isn’t about lockdowns (which are awful), it's about the government finally bringing in actual sanctions for people who don't quarantine when they get home from a bloody holiday, and people crying about how unfair that is. Ridiculous.

Cadent · 09/02/2021 23:12

Our government were too thick to realise quarantining was needed back in March.

It’s not even hindsight, we were all wondering why there wasn’t quarantining in place.

Suddenly they want to hand out 10 year jail terms and the Covigilantes are salivating.

fluffi Nobody should lie I agree, but throwing out random threats of 10 years in prison is ridiculous. Makes them look pathetic. They should have sorted out the borders a year ago.

Lastfreakinglegs · 09/02/2021 23:14

Also too thick to get a working test track and trace system for almost a year but now suddenly this. Something is not adding up.

OP posts:
Cadent · 09/02/2021 23:19

Yes, and £1billion of contracts have been handed to Tory friends and donors for Test and Trace and other contracts.

I wonder who will get rich from the quarantining.

Yes this. ^. It scares me how compliant and unquestioning the population is.

*What I’ve found alarming is the amount of people enjoying living in an authoritarian society. They just love it and expect every one else to lap it up too.

“Oh I hate it too but it’s for the good of mankind...’'*

No part of that statement even remotely suggests anyone enjoys living in a pandemic!
It's merely stating that they view lockdown rules as neccessary and are willing to tolerate it for the collective good despite all the selfish fuckers who refuse to comply

MammaMiaWallace · 09/02/2021 23:24

It’s nonsensical and feels insidious for all manner of reasons.

MammaMiaWallace · 09/02/2021 23:24

(The whole thing)

Butterfly44 · 09/02/2021 23:25

It's a definite deterrent! But it does annoy me that people are jailed much less for very serious crimes. If this is the standard then sentences of for murder, rape etc need to be brought in line

RabbityMcRabbit · 09/02/2021 23:27

Fucking this Considering paedophiles get lesser sentences I think its bloody shocking.
