AIBU to expect heating to be on?

Me & DD's are spending our days at my FIL house for the next couple of weeks while some work is being done on our house.

We're having meals here, but I brought all the food with us, and I'm doing him dinner every day too.

It's absolutely freezing in his house! Youngest DD is sitting under a duvet in the spare room, and oldest is wearing her gloves to do her homework. There is snow on the ground outside. I asked him (politely) if we could put the heating on - he says it'll come on automatically if it goes below 16.5 degrees!

AIBU to think this is too bloody cold? He just shrugged and said that we should wear more clothes!

people are mad on this thread how miserable to be cold . Its bitter out in the minus our heating is set for 22 all day long and whilst it's this cold 18 at night. Will worry about the bill later we are in lockdown the least we can be is warm and fed especially in this day and age. My mum is 79 and I have set hers the same. Life is too short to sit in your own home wearing scarves coats and gloves even with heating set as above still wear a jumper indoors and fleece pjs and have electric blankets on bed if needed I'm 52 maybe it's an age thing but honestly life is too short to be cold on top of everything else we are all dealing with at the moment . We also have a gas fire we put on in lounge to top up if needed we live in a 1950s bungalow but regardless would not be cold!!

Britney1 · 09/02/2021 18:46

"@Familyshopper People on here are nuts ! Anything under 21 is freezing we aren’t living in the dark ages !"

Dark ages??? That is fine when you are paying for it. When you are not paying for it and spending time in someone else's house for free , that is a temp that needs paying for.

Can OP sit in your hse all day with her DC at 21 for free? She will cook you dinner using your fuel but pay for ingredients. How generous of you.

RednaxelasBaubles · 09/02/2021 18:46

Jeez the misery of being cold Sad

EberhardtSmallcock · 09/02/2021 18:55

I'd say "Jeez the misery of being hot" Grin

12 degrees in my study at the moment, which is perfect (for me). I am wearing a jumper.

Shhimtryingtosleep · 09/02/2021 18:55

The heating in my house comes on at 16c

Britney1 · 09/02/2021 19:00

"@orangetriangle Will worry about the bill later we are in lockdown the least we can be is warm "

I hope you and your mum both have enough money to pay for all this fuel you are using. Would be very reckless of you to post on MN encouraging others to use heating utilities, without sufficient means to pay.

Madjakelmum · 09/02/2021 19:05

You are joking! Mine is set to 23 constantly morning noon and night. If no one is home and I remember I’ll turn down to 20. But that is far too cold.

ParlezVousWronglais · 09/02/2021 19:07

16?!! I bet if you measured the temperature in the room it would be higher. 21 is comfortable for me and that’s with several layers.

Middersweekly · 09/02/2021 19:09

He sounds like he’s being a bit mean and miserable tbh. When I lived in the UK my heating would click on if it fell below 18 degrees! 16 is too cold 🥶 if you’re at a point of seeing your breath in front of your face then I would suggest his thermostat is broken. Just bung it on and leave him £20 when you leave!

Icenii · 09/02/2021 19:09

12 degrees, is that the lowest we've had so far?

And it really baffles me the low expectations people have regarding family. Everyone is very siloed and inwards focuses arnt they.

pollymere · 09/02/2021 19:11

16-18 used to be standard indoor temperature. I thought you meant 10 deg or less. Wear socks, extra jumper etc. I grew up in houses without radiators. Get a baby thermometer which shows healthy room temperature (mine were all free) or one that shows max and lowest as well as current temp. If it doesn't drop much below 12 then it's not an issue.

kowari · 09/02/2021 19:15

What's the highest?

EberhardtSmallcock · 09/02/2021 19:17

@kowari

12 degrees, is that the lowest we've had so far? What's the highest?
I hope I'm not being used as some kind of talisman.

I prefer to be on the cooler side, but I know others (including my teenagers/young adults, but they're not here so I can do what I like) prefer it warmer.

EberhardtSmallcock · 09/02/2021 19:18

Would also say that I live in a very old and draughty house, so low temperatures are inevitable. If I liked hot rooms, I would have bought a modern house. Each to their own, and all that.

TheMoth · 09/02/2021 19:21

I don't think my house is ever 12 degrees! It's small and insulated though. Heating went off at 9 and I didn't need it on again until 430. 3 layers of clothes. 10 minute kettle bell at 1030.

kowari · 09/02/2021 19:23

I hope I'm not being used as some kind of talisman.
Some people on this thread are claiming that it is a sort of competition for the coldest temperature. I'm not sure why Confused. I was just wondering if they were keeping track of the highest temperatures too.

Shikamiri · 09/02/2021 19:27

My thermostat is set to 24 and the house is just warm, high ceilings, single glazed sash windows etc. I dont understand having your thermostat set at 16???

kowari · 09/02/2021 19:29

Different house, different people? Ours is set to 17 and is warm too.
R3ALLY · 09/02/2021 19:29

I am fascinated by this thread. Our thermostat is 22 but the heating only comes on for a few hours a day, two in the morning and 6-9 at night. But now we are all home I’m sticking it on for the odd hour here and there. Couldn’t imagine having it on all day! Not criticising, just fascinated. If I’m alone I use a hot water bottle but with kids here home schooling I’m using it more. Never at night though

R3ALLY · 09/02/2021 19:30

Sorry should clarify 2 hours in the morning, 6-8am and 3 at night, 6-9pm

Oly4 · 09/02/2021 19:33

16.5 is way too cold in my book. Anything below 20 is cold in my book during the day.
I’d say you’re all really cold and please can he put the heating on? Or better still get DH to do it.
Or go to a premier Inn!

Signoramarella · 09/02/2021 19:42

That's shit and miserable. He doesn't care about his grandkids. When our house was bring rewired I paid for a hotel. And we had a staycation. Couldn't bear staying with my parents, they are mean with food and have the house tropical!

ellyeth · 09/02/2021 19:43

That sounds really miserable. If he is, as you say, not on a tight budget then I would try and think of an alternative place to stay. Otherwise, I'm afraid it means putting on lots of clothes and perhaps getting yourselves some hot water bottles and woolly socks. Someone on another site mentioned heated throws. I don't know if you would want to go to that sort of expense but it might help.

smilesy · 09/02/2021 19:47

People obviously respond to temperature in different ways and this is influenced by age/ sex/ weight etc, but AgeUK recommend 21 degrees. Low ambient temperature can lead to hypothermia. Some of the temperatures suggested on this thread are verging on the barbaric and are probably dangerous.

Britney1 · 09/02/2021 19:48

Jesus H Christ. What part of the OP is a guest in her FIL's home and not contributing to heating costs are people not getting? Temperature this and Temperature that.

FIL maintains a temp in his own property as he sees fit and can afford. Op is a guest. She dictates FA temp.
