AIBU to expect heating to be on?

Me & DD's are spending our days at my FIL house for the next couple of weeks while some work is being done on our house.

We're having meals here, but I brought all the food with us, and I'm doing him dinner every day too.

It's absolutely freezing in his house! Youngest DD is sitting under a duvet in the spare room, and oldest is wearing her gloves to do her homework. There is snow on the ground outside. I asked him (politely) if we could put the heating on - he says it'll come on automatically if it goes below 16.5 degrees!

AIBU to think this is too bloody cold? He just shrugged and said that we should wear more clothes!

Fuck that. I’d order a couple of heaters from Amazon Prime.

veeeeh · 08/02/2021 21:56

Spade a spade, it is down to cost.

Some people are miserable and enjoy evoking their frugal life journey to others.

I have ditched so many tight gits now and Covid or not, they are never going to denigrate me anymore.

SmoggieC · 08/02/2021 21:59

Our heating is on at 18 from around 5am to whenn we go to bed. I can't tolerate being cold. I always wear a tee and jumper.

lynsey91 · 08/02/2021 22:00

@Needsmustnow

Why do people keep saying put some extra layers on, as if op hasn't thought of that already.

Well, she hasn't though. A t-shirt and a jumper aren't really enough for February.

Sorry but indoors I think a t shirt and a jumper are more than enough to wear.

How many layers are we meant to wear? I am not piling on layer after layer and lumbering around the house like michelin woman thank you.

Frazzled2207 · 08/02/2021 22:02

sounds like MiL. All of DH's family are like this. They grew up in cold houses I grew up in a nice toasty house. I know it's not good to have the heating on all the time for both financial and environmental reasons but it's a constant source of grumpiness in our house in the winter, especially this one as I'm obviously at home all the time!

Christmas is the one day of the year when I really really need to feel nice and warm. In this house we have a nice woodburner which we rarely can be bothered with tbh except at Christmas. Anyway MiL doesn't have any kind of 'fire'. I remember one particularly chilly christmas when I just shivered all day and she said 'oh sorry the heating doesn't come on till 5pm'. it's CHRISTMAS FFS.

ayegazumba · 08/02/2021 22:06

Oh my gosh mine is on anywhere between 22-24 and the moment! I'd freeze in all your houses! Worth every penny not to be cold in your own house and I'm still wearing a layer of thermals plus a jumper, thermal socks and ugg slippers 🤷🏻‍♀️

veeeeh · 08/02/2021 22:08

God Almighty.
Get rid of your heating if you are not willing to use it.

Some Brits are tight as ducks arses.

Yay! A competitive "my house is colder than your house" thread!

Where do they hand out the medals for the people whose thermostat is never cranked into double digits? Hmm

Comefromaway · 08/02/2021 22:13

It really does depend on the location of the thermostat. In our old house we had to have the thermostat set at 23 as it was high up right above a lamp and got the heat from the light bulb.

In our new house if the thermostat is in the dining room (no external walls) it’s set at 21 so we’ve put it in the hall and it’s great at 19.5

I came in one day last week to find dh had put the thermostat in the unheated conservatory. The house was roasting. Poor Ds was convinced he had a fever and had his bedroom window open.

Open air ceremony😁

DrCoconut · 08/02/2021 22:20

Layers don't make any difference to the cold air that you're breathing and surrounded by. It's not healthy to have a freezing cold house., PHE suggest 18c as the threshold below which adverse effects can happen (though they do say can not definitely will) especially for older people or those with health issues. If you run warm fair enough but I don't understand people who can afford heating siting shivering in blankets and woolly hats.

RileyG73 · 08/02/2021 22:27

Oh, I suppose my thermometer is in the coldest part of my house. My house is very tall, the temp downstairs is obviously different to upstairs. So when my heating is set to 16, upstairs will be more likely 20

thegreylady · 08/02/2021 22:31

Ours is set at 22 in the day and off at night.

Dontlikeveg · 08/02/2021 22:31

You are cooking your own food so perhaps you should have given him say, £50 on arrival as you would want the heating on.

OakSnows · 08/02/2021 22:36

I’d tell him that if you can’t turn the heating up you’re going to have to buy portable heaters for the rooms for your children or move out.
That’s not comfortable.

Frazzled2207 · 08/02/2021 22:45

@thegreylady

My Dh would literally freak out at this. He highest he’ll let me have it is at 19 and he puts it down to 17 every time he passes the thermostat

Who died and made him Heating King?

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 08/02/2021 22:54

The competitive "I cannot possibly survive under 25C and could not imagine wearing a JUMPER in the winter" is tiring too Hmm

Some people are a lot more active than others, get over it. If you are outside a lot, a reasonably heated house feels warm when you come in.
🤷

Some posters are completely ridiculous. Who cares if you want your house at 30 C in February? Do you need everybody to agree with you to make yourself feel better.

I bet it's the same precious ones who insist on having fans and air con in the summer as they die, they MELT and pass out as soon as the temperature reaches 22!

My house is not even that cold, but if I wanted to wear a tshirt in the winter, I would emigrate.

hansgrueber · 08/02/2021 23:03

I put mine during the day to about 16 and it's plenty warm enough though it does depend on the construction of the building and how you choose to dress! It's winter so put something warmer on.

79andnotout · 08/02/2021 23:04

I've noticed that we don't tend to have the central heating on at the weekend as we're doing stuff around the house rather than just sat at our desks working so not cold.

However, we still have underfloor heating in the kitchen and bathroom and that's always on, so the house is never that cold anyway. I grew up in a house that always had an AGA on which would be my ideal in my retirement, but I could never fit one in. My granny was always sat next to hers doing her wordsearch.

I think you mean air-con on and the windows open, so pointless.

Hee hee, listen to yourself...

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 08/02/2021 23:50

Guylan

you should read my posts...

I defend the right of people to chose the temperature THEY are happy with, not to follow some random internet posters accusing anyone who prefers lower setting to be a tight arse martyr...

And I am making fun of the ones who are so triggered Grin

I couldn't care less if your bedroom is set up at 14 or 35, why are people so bothered?

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 08/02/2021 23:51

that's priceless Grin

SchrodingersImmigrant · 08/02/2021 23:59

Apparently freshly gutted horse or a cow (so you all could fit in) is good to keep you warm. I think that in the middle of living room could send a signal you all are cold.😂
