to think that Jackie Weaver is a hero to feminism?

Because I refuse to believe that those appalling men would have spoken to another man the way they attempted to shout her down. She handled herself so beautifully.

Frankly I think she deserves to be Dame Jackie Weaver for services to common sense!

@LApprentiSorcier

A politics student who watches local council meetings as a pastime

That's what I mean. It's implausible. Something smells off here

frumpety · 07/02/2021 10:34

It's for the electorate to decide who represents them at meetings. Not Jackie Weaver.

I wonder how many people actually voted for the Parish Councillors, I imagine there would be a publicly available record ? Here, you just put your name forward, if there are the same number of people who want the role as there are roles available then they all get a position, if they all meet the strict eligibility criteria.
If there are more people than positions available, then someone may give way to allow another person to take on the role, I know I would if the opportunity presented itself, but we struggle at the best of times to fill the seats.

kirktonhouse · 07/02/2021 10:34

@Pyewhacket

As was their right, two councillors had asked for a meeting. The dreadful chairman was trying to stop it happening.

He was questioning Jackie Weaver's authority at that meeting. The Proper Officer thing was a red herring but to exclude The Chairman and The Deputy Chairman like she did WAS in contravention of the Standing Rules. You then have to adjourn the meeting and elect a new chair/person but you have to include ALL members of the Prarish council in that process. You can't elect a Chair while excluding other members of the council. That will make any decisions invalid. She was there to adjudicate on the conduct of the meeting. She wasn't there to make execute decisions of who was excluding from electing a Chair.

I think if they did indeed read their own standing orders, they would probably find that none of them are indeed Parish Councillors now anyway as they failed to attend a meeting every six months. The Parish needs new Councillors, not just the shoutiest self important pillocks that it has now.

Jackie knows this, it's all just empty words. They need to elect new council members, and I strongly suspect that there will need to be an election this time!

MyKingdomForACaramel · 07/02/2021 10:35

@pinkearedcow I could almost match each one on that meeting to a character in the book!

trulydelicious · 07/02/2021 10:40

@JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority

She just went straight for the big red button. And she didn’t attempt to explain herself either

So a bully = feminist hero?

InescapableDeath · 07/02/2021 10:42

Absolutely amazed at women trying to say Jackie is the bully or 'there must be more to it' or 'she wasn't elected'.

There's a history to the video! They'd all met her before, and presumably all knew why she was called in. They knew it would be recorded (as the previous one was) and this was just how they behave. They might have been worse if it wasn't recorded!

I thought she was amazing. And not a bully. How can you be the bully with people SCREAMING at you? She removed them to defuse it. They were never ever going to simply calm down.

Chocolino · 07/02/2021 10:42

Jackie can clearly hold her own and I am really proud of her. I wish more women had the confidence or the ability to not give a shit when standing up to men.

Sorry, I thought it was all made up? Pick your argument!

B33Fr33 · 07/02/2021 10:43

Elected officials still have to behave legally and respectfully. They get to be held account. I've seen clerks ring for security at in person meetings. The councillors are just an example of what happens when manipulative abusive networks get all their mates into their little club. They get very hostile when someone tries to bring morals along.

JazzyGeoff · 07/02/2021 10:47

Jackie is fab but having watched a bit more, I'd agree that Sue is the real hero

LApprentiSorcier · 07/02/2021 10:47

The meeting would never even have started if Tolver hadn't been ejected. Every time Jackie proposed opening the meeting, Tolver, who was supposed to be the chair, began arguing that the meeting had been called unlawfully.

Fuhfeuucdr · 07/02/2021 10:47

I thought she came across as bullying. Talking over the Chairman, then kicking him out when he became frustrated and asked her to let him speak.

I appreciate there’s a history there, but none of them covered themselves in glory.

HeronLanyon · 07/02/2021 10:48

I’ve got close ties with very small remote town. Often see planning stuff. Now when I read ‘parish council strong objection’ in county council site or ‘there followed a lovely debate about x’ in the pc minutes I’ll be thinking of this.
Also listened to the archers earlier and was reminded that Neil is chair of ambridge parish council - made me laugh out loud. They’ve had a few lovely meeting with ‘Emmur’ at loggerheads with various. I hope scriptwriters have taken note (I know some don’t believe the archers is real).

trulydelicious · 07/02/2021 10:49

@HenriettaHeffalump

Sorry, I thought it was all made up

I'm not saying it was all made up.

But I struggle to understand how this is newsworthy.

What is the media trying to achieve here?

blueleonburger · 07/02/2021 10:50

That’s it. You’ve convinced me. I’m gonna buy the T shirt.

CrisisManagement · 07/02/2021 10:50

@WestendVBroadway

I think I may need to rewatch the footage. Please don't pile on me, but I have to confess when I saw the video my immediate thought was that JW was the one being unprofessional not allowing the men to speak, and evicting them in a power hungry way.
The Feminism boards will help set you straight.
trulydelicious · 07/02/2021 10:50

Are we supposed to hate men? Aren't women sometimes bullies too? I don't get what's the moral of all this and why people believe she's a hero for kicking a couple of men out of a Zoom meeting.

LookMoreCloselier · 07/02/2021 10:51

@trulydelicious I'm glad someone else thinks theres something a bit strange about this going viral!

HeronLanyon · 07/02/2021 10:51

Watch the previous meeting. Watch it and understand !

EarringsandLipstick · 07/02/2021 10:51
Jackie Weaver the opera, for anyone who hasn't seen it:
Thanks so much for this Henrietta

Brilliant! People are amazing!

TillyTopper · 07/02/2021 10:52

To be honest I don't think any of them covered themselves in glory.

CrisisManagement · 07/02/2021 10:53

I would love to know how Jackie found out this had gone viral. I mean, there she is, going about her life, when suddenly she finds out her conduct in a work meeting held a few weeks ago has made her a national treasure.

She'd be pinching herself.

Graciebobcat · 07/02/2021 10:53

You never need to yell at someone in a Parish Council meeting. Very unprofessional.

trulydelicious · 07/02/2021 10:53

@LookMoreCloselier

Yes, it's very odd

ScreamingBeans · 07/02/2021 10:54

I think there's been such a reaction to her is because any woman who has ever had to work with men in this sort of environment, has been treated like this or seen another women treated like this.

If women behaved like this in a professional context, we'd be up on a disciplinary because it's unacceptable.
