to think that Jackie Weaver is a hero to feminism?

Because I refuse to believe that those appalling men would have spoken to another man the way they attempted to shout her down. She handled herself so beautifully.

Frankly I think she deserves to be Dame Jackie Weaver for services to common sense!

truelydelicious
The point of a Chair in a meeting is to co trol it. Comments should be addressed through the Chairperson and they follow the agenda of the meeting. Any other business is the chance to address other issues not on the agenda.
Jackie removed those from the meeting whom were not conducting themselves correctly, in the setting of a virtual meeting she had little choice if the would not wait to be addressed before getting their point across. Not the perfect choice but the only one when she was faced with the barrage she was getting.

Roussette · 07/02/2021 15:29

I've read the whole thread. And everyone's posts.

Are you suggesting that people who wanted these men off the Council somehow or other engineered it that a politics student released it on his twitter and then somehow or other made it go viral.

Who are those in the group and how did they make something go viral.

In my time I have seen the most ridiculous tweets/footage go viral for no other reason than they are funny/ridiculous/horrifying/daft (delete as applicable)

I really don't think there is some secret group making this particular footage go viral.
One step too far to think that.

I wish it worked that way. I've put stuff on Twitter that I wish would take off. It doesn't. Even though I've got nearly 3,000 followers. And yet the most unlikely stuff does. You can't make it happen.

@wintermoths
my immediate thought was that JW was the one being unprofessional not allowing the men to speak, and evicting them in a power hungry way

That's because you are so used to seeing men behave in an aggressive way that you consider it the norm and therefore acceptable. Bur you are so unused to seeing a woman refuse to put up with this from a man, and to have the ability to refuse to put up with this from a man, that you have misinterpreted this as HER being power hungry and unprofessional

Please don't assume to know what I consider acceptable and what I would put up with. I certainly would NOT put up with that aggressive talk from a man, I also would not put up with it from a woman. I am also sufficiently assertive not to put up with anybody , man or woman(I wouldn't assume your gender) telling me that they know me better than I know myself.

Jackie Weaver didn't put up with it either ...

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/02/2021 15:34

Unbelievably, Sarah Vine in the Daily Mail has the best description of Jackie and the idiots she had to deal with.

"Women such as Jackie are the sanity and the backbone of this country. They may not be as glamorous or as well groomed as the ones who sit on boards or bear fancy titles or hold the ears of Ministers. But in some ways that makes them all the more impressive. Because they do what they do not out of ambition or desire for recognition (just as well, really, since rarely is any forthcoming), but out of a genuine sense of moral duty.

Make no mistake: it’s not the Brian Tolvers or Aled Brewertons of this world who get things done. They’re not the ones who get the lock fixed on the disabled toilets in the Town Hall, or who make sure Mrs Featherington gets a lift to her hospital appointment. Oh no, such petty irrelevancies are not for them. They’re far too busy wafting around on an over-inflated balloon of their own pomposity, reminding everyone how important and in-charge they are."

She does!

Roussette · 07/02/2021 15:36

Credit where credit's due. Great analysis Sarah Vine. And all the more surprising given who you're married to!

You have not authority here wintermoths! Grin

And I wasn't talking about what you personally would do. But what you ( all of us) are used to seeing from men and not seeing from women.

katy1213 · 07/02/2021 15:45

@Roussette got there before me!

No wonder people don't want to get involved in local politics.

skodadoda · 07/02/2021 15:50

@DinkyDaisy

Is there a video of the meeting just before the viral one? The one Brian Tolver refers to right at the beginning? Seems there is, but I can't find it! Watched January...
Here is a link to the meeting held afterwards; a much more civilised event and goes a long way to explain the problem
JaimeLeeCurtains · 07/02/2021 15:52
@LApprentiSorcier

I had to watch the video again and I still don't understand how something like this could go viral if it wasn't for some group orchestrating it
Maybe Glinner did it?

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 07/02/2021 15:53

Awful awful men.

Eleganz · 07/02/2021 16:00
**@Eleganz* and @Arobase*

Thank you for clarifying this for me.

So the Opposition (most likely) instigated the viralisation of a video and then worked with their MSM cronies to spin the story and encourage people to come forward to contribute to topple the government
I suspect you are a troll.

If not, nothing I said supports your conspiracy so please stop lying.

You really think that the main stream national media are reporting on this because of a conspiracy to remove a few councillors from a civil parish council that represents 6,000 people in a small town near Stockport? If you aren't a troll you must either be on something or lockdown is not going well for you.

It appears that the chairman of the council was elected with a lead of about 30 votes on the next candidate and a voter turnout of just 42.6% in 2019. That shows you the level of apathy people have about local politics. If this episode generates more engagement in Handforth, great! If that results in the removal of councillors that can't stick to their own code of conduct and hold regular meetings, even better.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/02/2021 16:04

The video itself was public record of a public meeting. The attendees knew it would be published.

Why it went viral is because it was shocking, funny in places, and an insight into how Zoom meetings can go badly wrong.

I would think that lockdown plays a large part in why this went viral. I see no need for any conspiratorial plan here - people are fed up of Zoom, fed up of being in lockdown and this provided some light relief and a talking point.

Plus social media is worldwide now, you know - these things travel! (I'm in Australia - Jackie Weaver is trending here too)

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 07/02/2021 16:07

Also I saw somewhere, possibly on this thread, possibly not, that quite often Parish Council elections don't get held because of costs - if there is no one to contest the seat, then what's the point in wasting money on an election?
If there is an other candidate for a post, then elections have to be held though, so maybe this lot will be removed next time, if the people of Handforth want someone on the PC who will actually work for them.

GoldieHelen · 07/02/2021 16:08

You can’t “make” a video go viral!

trulydelicious · 07/02/2021 16:09

@Roussette

In my time I have seen the most ridiculous tweets/footage go viral for no other reason than they are funny/ridiculous/horrifying/daft (delete as applicable

But this video is absolutely none of these things. So it's difficult to understand how on earth it got to the BBC!

GoldieHelen · 07/02/2021 16:11

Well, it seems that the vast majority of the millions of people who have watched it think it is utterly hilarious @trulydelicious

trulydelicious · 07/02/2021 16:12

@Eleganz

You really think that the main stream national media are reporting on this

I absolutely cannot understand how main stream media/ the BBC can be reporting on this non-event/soporific video, no.

GoldieHelen · 07/02/2021 16:13

For the most, the video has the complete package of funny/ridiculous/horrifying/daft and more. I’ve watched it several times now and it really is the gift that keeps giving Grin

skodadoda · 07/02/2021 16:19

@Marinaloves

Why is Aled so angry ? Why didn’t the chairman want the meeting to go ahead? why haven’t they had a meeting in 6 months? I need to know!!
Probably because they were afraid of been challenged about the way in which they got rid of Ashley, the original parish clerk. See this;
Roussette · 07/02/2021 16:21

Why it went viral is because it was shocking, funny in places, and an insight into how Zoom meetings can go badly wrong

Exactly!
We'e all been on Zoom and know how annoying it can be, and during lockdown this meeting was just so relevant.

Roussette · 07/02/2021 16:23

But this video is absolutely none of these things. So it's difficult to understand how on earth it got to the BBC!

There's about 2 people I know of who don't find the vid gobsmackingly awful or hilarious, you're one of them. And I believe there was a PP who said the same so that's the other one.

I've watched it about 4 times. Each time something new I missed pops up.
Grin
@Eleganz

Because it went viral on social media and so large number of people are engaged in discussing it.

It really isn't that hard to understand unless you really, really want there to be a massive conspiracy theory because you absolutely can't accept that human interest stories are a thing.

Roussette · 07/02/2021 16:30

Just odd. So trulydelicious doesn't find it funny or interesting or awful or any of those things.

There are millions of vids/footage/news stories I feel the same about. I just don't watch it, or comment on it, because I have no interest in it. There will be threads on MN about them and I scroll past because it doesn't interest me and I have nothing to say.

I don't however, go on that thread and hint at conspiracy!
