Actresses - Feel so cross - ruined by plastic surgery

Thisisnotreallymyname · 06/02/2021 20:03

Feel so sad - been watching TV and why is it that women ( in the main ) feel the need to absolutely ruin their faces with fillers, Botox, face lifts, to the point where they look deformed, or like they are wearing shiny masks.
Felicity Kendal last night on Graham Norton, Fern Britton on Mastermind, Sally Thomsett on Pointless Celeb........
Do they not see what we see when they look in the mirror ?
I’ve nothing against PSurgery, but my God, please know when to stop !

IABU - they look fine
IANBU -they look awful .

I think part of the problem is that the work looks good if your face is still (or looks the way you want it to look - I think the puffy lips look god-awful but I clearly just don't get the aesthetic).

So, good in photos or looking in the mirror. Less good in everyday life when your face has to move.

Having said that, I thought FK looked ok on Graham Norton. Usual Daily Mail clickbait shite.

I saw Joanna Lumley in one of those Audience With type shows at a local theatre a few years ago. I was a few rows back and had a good look. If she has had worked done, it's bloody good. What made her appear youthful was the way she moved, her vivacity, her engagement, her sense of humour. I went because the tickets were cheap rather than because I was a fan (it was a try out run for her before she went nationwide with her show), and came away thinking what a marvellous woman.

Sheila Hancock looks every bit her age but looks amazing.

Mickey Rourke has to be the poster boy for bad cosmetic surgery, a face massacred at an early age too. Must be deep psychological issues to do that to yourself. Rupert Everett was a beautiful man who started on the plastic road bafflingly early. He seems to have stopped now, he looks more natural recently.

Lots more women/actresses in Hollywood and here are getting into production so the inequalities where a middle aged man is paired with a much younger woman might stop at some point, she said hopefully. Keely Hawes has produced and directed Finding Alice. I haven't watched it but she looks her age in that, nothing wrong in that. But on GN recently she looked "refreshed". It could be good make up, I hope it is, she seems authentic and believable so I hope she stays focused on her talent and how she can change the industry rather than on her appearance.

Definitely something in this. A spring in your step and a zest for life that shows in your eyes can be so much more youthful than a tight face.

What do you think Oscars are awarded for if not talent? 🙄

Good question for which many people would have a lot of answers!

www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2014/03/the-secrets-to-winning-an-academy-award/284158/

Awards ceremonies tend to award people who already have awards. Emma Thompson won her Oscar for best actress in 1993 and then was a nominee again in 1994 and 1996.

Obviously Emma Thompson is very talented, but there is a limited number of awards to win, and if you need to be Emma Thompson to avoid fillers, that is a very high bar to cross.

I think the thing you are missing is that there aren't that many female parts, and the small group of actresses with enough career capital to tell casting directors where to go do not reflect the industry.

DenisetheMenace · 07/02/2021 12:37

DailyCandy

If you’re happy to ‘just age’, that’s your prerogative, more power to you.“

Isn’t that what most of us do? It’s not unusual.

Willyoujustbequiet · 07/02/2021 12:39

I saw Linda Grey (Sue Ellen from Dallas)on something the other day and thought she looked bloody amazing for her age.

VinylDetective · 07/02/2021 12:43

That small group of actresses could use their influence and example to help change the industry. That’s why it’s so disappointing that so many of them capitulate.

o8O8O8o · 07/02/2021 12:46

Upright posture, good muscle tone and a flat stomach ...that's what makes someone look youthful!

AuntieMarysCanary · 07/02/2021 12:51
@AuntieMarysCanary. What exactly is wrong with looking average in your 70s?
@CounsellorTroi
Errrrrrrr - nothingConfused

The poster of the photo said SG looked great for early 70s.

I said she looks average. (ie not 'great') and pretty normal for a 70-ish woman. If you see that comment as as insult, that's your choice :)

ZaZathecat · 07/02/2021 12:57

I agree and it's gradually becoming the norm for male actors too, certainly in Hollywood.
By contrast though, I see that Sinead Cusack at 72 looks great, wrinkles and all.

bluebluezoo · 07/02/2021 12:57

I’m not so sure it is any more.

Botox and fillers are pretty much routine “grooming” now, alongside waxing, tanning, nails and eyebrows.

Eaumyword · 07/02/2021 12:59

Like a pp, we watched the film I See You and we had to double check it was Helen Hunt, despite her having had very distinct features. Same for Renee Zelwegger a few years ago. They look fine but more generic than before, with definite feature blurring.
I don't blame actresses for having work done but find it curious that the end result makes them look fine, but not like themselves. Surely the aim is to look like yourself only slightly better?
I think Linda Hamilton, Joanna Lumley and Sigourney Weaver look fantastic. Fit and healthy. Yes, with wrinkles - but they look great, fizzing with self confidence, good posture, great style and a lot of life stories to tell with a smile!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 07/02/2021 13:05

that simply isn’t true. If it was Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, Anita Dobson and Emma Thompson would have been out of work years ago. It does women no favours to perpetuate this nonsense. And, even if it were true, the only way it will change is for public opinion to make it unacceptable, not encourage it

Bullshit.

Quote from Judi Dench:
In 2014, she said: “I’m tired of being told I’m too old to try something. I should be able to decide for myself if I can’t do things and not have someone tell me I’ll forget my lines or I’ll trip and fall on the set”
She told The Hollywood Reporter magazine: “Age is a number. It’s something imposed on you. It drives me absolutely spare when people say, ‘Are you going to retire? Isn’t it time you put your feet up?*

Maggie Smith:
Dame Maggie Smith, 82, believes she would not succeed as a young actress today because the 'stars are pressured to show off their bodies

Julie walters:
Walters, 64, thinks older women have a tougher time in Hollywood because of pressure to look young. The star, who is starring in Christmas blockbuster Paddington, said: “There is a lot more plastic surgery. I think youth seems to be more important in the States, people don’t want to age

Emma Thompson:

Emma Thompson has revealed the enormous pressure she is under to remain stick thin and look impossibly youthful to survive in Hollywood
Asked how she liked doing big American studio films as she promoted her latest, Stranger Than Fiction, the 47-year-old actress replied: "It's such a burden having to look good. Especially on screen because what if you have a bad nights sleep

But in America everybody wants you to be twelve and size zero and it's like, no, I don't like it

All those actresses you mention have talked extensively in interviews about the pressures of having to stay looking young in their profession so its absolute crap to imply it doesnt exist for them, or anyone else. Oscar or no Oscar.

KarenMarlow3 · 07/02/2021 13:06

One great actress, Maggie Smith, hasn't had any work done as far as I know and still gets great roles.

KarenMarlow3 · 07/02/2021 13:10

Now I see that someone else has mentioned her.

ButNotTonight20 · 07/02/2021 13:12

I was lucky enough to meet nigella Lawson in her 2019 book tour and she has definitely had work done but looks amazing. I want the number of her surgeon when my time comes!
I think she is the exception to the rule however.
It makes me sad to see what Tori Amos has done to herself.

VinylDetective · 07/02/2021 13:12

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter, you’ve proved all those women recognise the pressure their industry puts on women. None of them have capitulated to it though. And, strangely, they’re still working. In Smith and Dench’s cases well into their 80s.

I really don’t understand why the prevailing view on this thread is defence of one of the most ageist industries on the planet. It’s profoundly depressing.

o8O8O8o · 07/02/2021 13:18

Nigella Lawson you say 😳
definitely has had work done you say 😳
OMG who'da thought it @ButNotTonight20

You are deliberately being obtuse now. They have ALL spoken out about the hideous pressure to conform but you simply dont want to accept it as it doesnt fit the narrative you want to believe. Even IF Judi dench has consistently worked that is still ONE actress amongst a plethora of others who struggle to find work.

Sad that you cant believe what women tell you about an industry they actually work in.

Bbq1 · 07/02/2021 13:30

Judi Dench looks the age she naturally should but is still beautiful

randomer · 07/02/2021 13:33

Why can't people just be the age they are? On the outside and inside?

I suppose its a cultural thing.
It appears one must look like melted tupperware or have a spring in your step and an upright spine.
Can't you just be a kindly, older, wiser person?

merrymouse · 07/02/2021 13:37

None of them have capitulated to it though.

I'm a bit confused about whether you blame Emma Thompson and Judi Dench for not succeeding in using their influence to change the entire film industry, or whether you admire them for not capitulating.

However, it's not a question of 'capitulating'. If an actor doesn't fit the casting director's brief they just don't get the job. Most jobbing actors don't have a long list of Oscar nominations and they just want to pay the mortgage.

merrymouse · 07/02/2021 13:40

If an actor doesn't fit the casting director's brief they just don't get the job.

Or more accurately don't get seen for the job in the first place.

FinalSongbird · 07/02/2021 13:46

I wonder if Felicity Kendall is having age related teeth issues? That may explain some of the change in lip shape.

thenorthernluce · 07/02/2021 13:53

Lisa Kudrow looks to me to be ageing normally, and I think she looks much better than her tweaked former co-stars. Looking your age needs to become more prevalent on screen, IMO.
