Actresses - Feel so cross - ruined by plastic surgery

Feel so sad - been watching TV and why is it that women ( in the main ) feel the need to absolutely ruin their faces with fillers, Botox, face lifts, to the point where they look deformed, or like they are wearing shiny masks.
Felicity Kendal last night on Graham Norton, Fern Britton on Mastermind, Sally Thomsett on Pointless Celeb........
Do they not see what we see when they look in the mirror ?
I’ve nothing against PSurgery, but my God, please know when to stop !

IABU - they look fine
IANBU -they look awful .

The only thing I’ve had done is mole removal. I had two of those sticky out moles that some older people develop, above my eyebrow. They were growing.

It cost three hundred, but it was money well spent.

Oblomov21 · 07/02/2021 11:02

Carol Vorderman is another one. So clever, naturally pretty. What a state she is now. Huge boobs and a wierd shaped bottom. And claiming to have had nothing done? Yeah, right! Hmm

Graciebobcat · 07/02/2021 11:04

I have reclaimed the "insults" menopausal, middle aged and mum. Happy to be all of the above and what of it? However I'd probably think differently if my earnings depended on looks. Not to say that I don't look after myself, but I can't see myself having cosmetic surgery.

Maireas · 07/02/2021 11:05

@Graciebobcat - I thought that about Sally Thomsett, I wondered if she had health problems. I noticed that she was seated throughout.

knittingaddict · 07/02/2021 11:10

I just looked up pictures of FK and I'm quite shocked by what a surgeon has done to her face. It looks terrible and she was someone who had the bone structure to age gracefully.

What I don't understand are all the headlines from papers like the DM and the Mirror saying how youthful she looks now. Is this just disingenuous reporting, which actually means "what the hell has happened to FK"? I didn't click on any of the links to find out.

Sidewalksue · 07/02/2021 11:11

I remember Dakota Johnson complaining that her mother doesn’t get any work these days. I wonder why.

It’ll be the men next. I think Bradley Cooper has had something done, might be fillers, but he’s starting to look weird and puffy. It’s not attractive.

Nicole Kidman’s face in that TV series was the most distracting thing ever. I think Jennifer Anniston just looks sad all the time and by all accounts she’s lovely but is getting that downturned stretched mouth.

Frenchdressing · 07/02/2021 11:16

You wonder how this all will end.....in Hollywood everyone looks like that!

VinylDetective · 07/02/2021 11:16

You do realise that for actresses, they have no choice but to look as young as possible in order to keep working?

That simply isn’t true. If it was Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, Anita Dobson and Emma Thompson would have been out of work years ago. It does women no favours to perpetuate this nonsense. And, even if it were true, the only way it will change is for public opinion to make it unacceptable, not encourage it.

merrymouse · 07/02/2021 11:18

Men are already under pressure to look as though they just left a men’s health cover shoot if they want some roles. (Thinking of Bridgerton cast). However, I think there are many more roles for normal looking men than normal looking women.

if you actually look at the GN programme and see her in the flesh she looks nothing like the photos in the Mail and other rags.

They have taken shots, with a milli second between them, grabbing shots when her expressions are slightly odd ( like everyone's are.)

On TV she looks okay. Her neck is very wrinkled but her face is nothing like those photos.

Her lips look quite ordinary on the TV prog. She always had a slightly odd face anyway- her cheeks were heavy and a bit 'chipmunk' and her lips thin even in her 30s.

Yes of course the rags are being disingenuous.

blueleonburger · 07/02/2021 11:24

I’m in two minds about this because on the one hand we colour our hair, get fake nails, paint make up all over our face, so what is a little Botox and filler? Just another thing we do to our bodies to feel and look good. On the other hand some celebs definitely take it too far and you get this bloated shiny warped look which is far too common nowadays.I actually blame the surgeon they need to know when to say no to their clients.

I think the best way forward is excellent consistent skincare. Best way to reduce lines and age spots whilst looking natural imo. Then if you need a little notice later on get it in tiny quantities. I’ve had Botox before as a preventative measure to stop lines forming

It is true.

There aren’t many Maggie Smith roles and they tend to be filled by a small number of actors. Maggie Smith, Judie Dench, Julie Waters and Emma Thompson have something else to sell - an Oscar winning/ Oscar nominee line on the poster

It’s all very well to talk about public opinion, but for the purposes of this thread, if the choice is between getting fillers and not working, it’s easy to see why people choose fillers.

stargirl1701 · 07/02/2021 11:28

Sigourney Weaver looks amazing in her early 70s.

CounsellorTroi · 07/02/2021 11:28

In many ways I think it is easier for actresses to push against it than it is for newsreaders and presenters. They often get sacked for visibly ageing.

And girls/young women can be terribly disparaging about older ones - mumsy, jowly, frumpy, granny clothes, bingo wings etc.

MintyMabel · 07/02/2021 11:29

Jennifer Grey was so distinctive and beautiful in Dirty Dancing and is now totally generic. It is sad.

She was also the target of some pretty shitty bullying about her looks. No wonder she chose to do what she did.

Not just women, Billy Crystal looks like a really bad waxwork of himself.

Rupert Everett, Simon Cowell too. But seems they aren’t judged for it the same.

To call her out for using a term that she innocently would not know, (as many people don't), was now deemed unacceptable, was a bit mean and deviating from the point she was making.

How would she learn if nobody is allowed to tell her?

Daft comment.

You don’t think the way we judge women’s looks has anything to do with people having plastic surgery.

but there are still individual Oscars for Best Actress and Best Actor, how does that work?
You’re asking why an organisation led primarily by old white men, who show absolutely no inclination to be inclusive to women and minority groups, still uses outdated language?

ParlezVousWronglais · 07/02/2021 11:30

The problem is for women in the media they are expected to not look old, or not naturally old.

So even if they look fake that is preferable to looking old. Its become normalised in the industry. It’s a matter of survival, staying relevant and getting work for most. Or ageing naturally and being overlooked.

I guess the only way to change it is for more people who don’t think like that to become the decision makers. Then there’s still the issue of how much the issue is linked to viewer numbers. It’s a whole society problem really.

VinylDetective · 07/02/2021 11:33

That really illustrates what a slippery slope it can be, doesn’t it? I’ve been grey since I was 43 - my friends said I was “brave” 🙄. I’ve always worn a face full of make up and you’ll have to tear my red lipstick from my cold dead hands, I have my very short nails gelled too because they’re so flaky.

Injecting stuff into my face is my line in the sand. I like my face, I like its character, I look so kind of blank in photos from when I was young. One of the most attractive women I ever met had a huge fan of wrinkles from the corners of her eyes when she laughed, she looked glorious.

VinylDetective · 07/02/2021 11:37

So essentially you’re saying that talent transcends looks and you’re absolutely right. Why does that only apply to a handful of actresses?

AuntieMarysCanary · 07/02/2021 11:44

@stargirl1701

Sigourney Weaver looks amazing in her early 70s.
Really? She looks how someone in their early 70s often looks.

Not great, not terrible, just average.

I think in the Uk sadly, many women let themselves go compared to other women in Europe where they take more care, especially of their weight.

CounsellorTroi · 07/02/2021 11:48

@AuntieMarysCanary. What exactly is wrong with looking average in your 70s?

ParlezVousWronglais · 07/02/2021 11:49

the natural signs of ageing are treated like the stigmata of some horrific disfiguring disease.

It’s death and dying though isn’t it? Moving towards death. That what we’re afraid of as a society.

There is a misogynistic element to it as well of course.

merrymouse · 07/02/2021 11:56

So essentially you’re saying that talent transcends looks and you’re absolutely right. Why does that only apply to a handful of actresses?

No, you have misunderstood. I'm saying a line on the poster saying "Oscar winning" transcends looks.

Casting directors are looking for a name that they can attach to a project, not scouting for talented older actresses. That shouldn't be the case, but it's just not true to say that because somebody will cast Maggie Smith they would cast a talented unknown who looked like Maggie Smith.

It has taken decades and a huge body of critically acclaimed work for Maggie Smith to get to where she is in the profession, but Alan Bennett only writes so many parts, and Dowager Duchesses don't tend to feature heavily in mainstream TV dramas or film.

Macncheeseballs · 07/02/2021 11:59

Nicole Kidman's face barely moves any more

Maireas · 07/02/2021 12:00

@AuntieMarysCanary...
Women in the UK "let themselves go" compared to women in Europe? Hmm
That's a generalisation.
Do you think women in the UK age more than European women or are less stylish?

VinylDetective · 07/02/2021 12:02

I'm saying a line on the poster saying "Oscar winning" transcends looks

What do you think Oscars are awarded for if not talent? 🙄
