To think not everyone washes their hands after every single wee when in their own home?

Anything other than a wee, yes of course.

But washing hands after every bloody wee is overkill in my opinion

OP posts:
TotorosFurryBehind · 06/02/2021 15:06

People mentioning public toilets, I assumed OP means at home.

strawberriesontheNeva · 06/02/2021 15:08

I really hope people wash the hands after a wee. I mean if you don't it's disgusting. Hope they flush the loo as well.

TotorosFurryBehind · 06/02/2021 15:10

All these people saying about preparing food... I'd always wash hands before any food prep. That's a totally separate issue and people shouldn't assume hands remain clean after washing them from using the loo.

pigsDOfly · 06/02/2021 15:11

When my children were in primary school one of the dinner ladies, returned from abroad and brought Shigella into the school. The infection was passed on because she prepared food whilst still infectious.

I'd never heard of Shigella before this but it was, and is, a notifiable disease and is pretty unpleasant.

It ran rife through the school and through many of the families in the school, many of them being very unwell.

One of my children caught it and was very unwell. I kept the other children home from school and she was the only one in our family who got it.

The reason no one else got it was because I was very strict about hand hygiene. No one else was allowed to use the lavatory she was using, but even so I swabbed it down every time she used it and we all washed our hands thoroughly after every visit to the lavatory, as we all did anyway.

I also always washed my hands before preparing food and everyone washed their hands before eating.

When you use a lavatory and don't wash your hands, particularly a public lavatory you have no idea what you might been picking up from the person who visited it before you. You then, quite likely, take it with you into your home.

I wash my hands after going to the toilet and before preparing food. This is because both soap and water are relatively cheap and I’m not a small child. As a grown adult it should be standard behaviour.
CounsellorTroi · 06/02/2021 15:20

@TotorosFurryBehind

Agreed. I don't get wee on my hands and my flush and toilet seat are immaculate. It helps that DH has a separate bathroom so I know it's only me that uses mine.

If I sound like a gross person, I'm actually really OCD about hygiene and things like not having shoes on inside.

Having shoes on inside is far less of a hygiene problem than not washing your hands after using the loo.
AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 06/02/2021 15:22

I don’t get wee on my hands, but I still wash them. Why wouldn’t you

I dont when at weeing at home as I drink lots of water so I pee often and wee is sterile when it leaves the body.

I wash hands when out and before preparing food etc. Ive always been ridiculously healthy too so clearly its not hurting me is it lol

PricklesAndSpikes · 06/02/2021 15:27

Can I ask all those people who don't wash their hands after using the toilet does literally no-one else use the toilet apart from you? And if they do, do you not touch the toilet seat / the flush / the bathroom door handle which they have also touched, maybe after having a poo or got a bit of wee on their hands or does everyone sanitise everything when they have been after they have washed their hands so there are no germs for you to pick up? If you have put the lid up or flushed, you have germs on your hands!

Also, do your hands not touch your inner thighs when you wipe? You know if they do (and I'm pretty sure they do, even though you might think they don't), then your hands now have germs on them that you then take out of the bathroom, happy that you are still uncontaminated...

Shitzngiggles · 06/02/2021 15:29

Why are people STILL saying urine is sterile. What a load of shite.

Haggisfish · 06/02/2021 15:30

Do you wash your hands every time you touch your own skin?! Each to their own, I think that much is clear from this thread! Never have I seen such clear division-apart from the washing towels after every use debate. Grin

Skysblue · 06/02/2021 15:31

Yes of course I wash my hands every time I touch the toilet. It’s disgusting not to.

God people like this are the reason the prime minister had to give hand washing lessons on tv 🤦‍♀️

And ti the people saying ‘what’s disgusting?’ - just go use google you idiots, or maybe redo primary school

Haggisfish · 06/02/2021 15:33

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter-indeed! Maybe it’s akin to the do you stand or sit to wipe your arse after pooing technique. One involves cupping your hands to catch as much piss as possible and the other involves pissing into the toilet bowl and getting any on your hands at all.

Haggisfish · 06/02/2021 15:33

Getting none on your hands, obviously!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 06/02/2021 15:35

haha! right?

Funnily enough, some of us can manage to wee in the toilet without getting ourselves drenched in wee. It seems some people in this thread exit the toilet literally drenched in urine from head to toe! lol

Haggisfish · 06/02/2021 15:35

@Skysblue the prime minister didn’t actually manage to wash his hands at all. He put soap on then immediately washed it away, without actually cleaning his hands. He totally fucked it up.

CounsellorTroi · 06/02/2021 15:40

I can't understand why any one would object to washing their hands after using the toilet, unless they have a bad skin condition. Is it laziness?

islockdownoveryet · 06/02/2021 15:40

Those that saying they don’t at home but always out of the house , then why not at home ? It takes a minute I mean is anyone so busy that they don’t have time to wash their hands ?. And stop saying it’s because they don’t need it etc .
It’s grim so stop justifying it and to the lady who said that her friends know about it , they think you are grim and why would you want people to think that about you ? . It’s basic hygiene that it’s taught from a child . So do us all a favour and wash your bloody hands 😷🤢.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/02/2021 16:01

@Annabell80

It's vile not to wash your hands. I do it every time, we all do. I work in a supermarket and can just imagine gross people who haven't washed their hands picking through the fruit and veg. Actually feel sick thinking I might have picked up something someone else with piss covered hands has touched.
I think there have been tests done on those bowls of peanuts you sometimes (used to) find on bars. They always found traces of urine.
Lordamighty · 06/02/2021 16:12

The worst test results were those done on ice in coffee shops. Most contained faecal matter & after reading this thread it’s hardly surprising.

WarmSausageTea · 06/02/2021 16:54

This sums it up for me. That said, I don’t give any thought to what other people do; I think you have to trust that anyone making a drink or preparing food for you practices good hygiene, otherwise you’d never eat or drink anything outside your home.

I don’t think I want to after reading this thread ! I thought it was only the odd unhygienic person that didn’t wash hands not this many 🤢
Cornettoninja · 06/02/2021 17:05

I was once told by a trainer that we have been conditioned to wash our hands after the toilet because it makes sure that people are washing their hands at regular intervals throughout the day. Before germ theory people weren’t that arsed about washing bits that weren’t visibly dirty (a fair few doctors took some convincing) so it needed simple rules to get the message through to the wider population.

In your own home (and as long as no one is ill) it doesn’t really matter and hand hygiene is much more important around preparing food. In public it’s probably best to take up any opportunity to clean your hands properly.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/02/2021 17:06

I think mn is full of contrarians all protesting they never wash their hands

LadyPenelope68 · 06/02/2021 17:07

Washing your hands after going to the toilet, no matter where you are, is basic hygiene. You are disgusting 🤢

ToffeePennie · 06/02/2021 17:07

That is disgusting. It is imperative that everyone washes their hands EVERY SINGLE TIME they go to the toilet. It’s utterly grim not too. 🤮
