DSIL snarky comments re my car me or being there for 2 days in Lockdown?

We live right by a nature reserve, lots of dog walkers, DSIL is one. She is rather, umm, curious, about goings on.

My car wasn't outside the house from Monday 9am till Tuesday evening.

She's messaged me to ask why 😵.

AIBU to tell her to mfyfob?

I went to an all-night rave.

Eh?

@Cadent

What do you mean eh? It's pretty obvious it was in response to your 'are you perfect' comment

@RedskyBynight

How did SIL know? I could understand her walking her dog a couple of time and seeing your car not there, but how did she know it was missing for the whole of nearly 2 days, unless she set up camp outside? Or is she a dedicated twitcher interested in the migratory patterns of local birds, who's set up permanent residence in the local bird hide?
This. I can imagine vaguely registering, 'Oh X's car is still gone' if I was walking past, but not extrapolating from that you'd done more than happened to have been out when I passed.

‘I was on a spa break’. Then refuse to engage.

Our lovely neighbours were on hols for 2 weeks and left their second car on our shared drive. Knocked to let us know that a mechanic would be a long to collect the car for some work to be done.
Several days later we had the police at our door because a friend had reported them as missing on the strength of neither of their cars being there for a few days!

I’m having a torrid affair
Simple

OakSnows · 05/02/2021 13:38

She totally thinks you’re having an affair!
Depending on the relationship, I would either play along and let her fester until your DH puts her straight, or just tell her

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/02/2021 13:39

If she was checking up on you, you could have some real fun with this - some great suggestions upthread. Grin

wifterwafter · 05/02/2021 13:40

Just ignore it!

BoyTree · 05/02/2021 13:43

I'd just reply 'Hmmm - suspicious, isn't it?' and see whether she pushes it!

Toorapid · 05/02/2021 13:47

I think I'd notice if a friend's car was missing for 2 days and be concerned and or/interested, why is that not OK?

Divebar2021 · 05/02/2021 13:48

Mine was missing for 3 weeks with an electrical fault and no one noticed

lightyearsahead · 05/02/2021 13:49

Car in the garage but tell tell DH!

Then see what happens..

HarrysWife · 05/02/2021 13:53

I would very slowly drip feed and see how desperate to know she is make her ask.

"Oh I was out so it wasnt there"
where were you? name the town you were in but not why.
Why? I had to take something down there.
What? A laptop.
Why? Because it was needed.

You could also wait hours between each text and really add suspense.

The fact that I'd be tempted to actually do this shows that I'm either easily amused or going mad from boredom due to lockdown!

HarrysWife · 05/02/2021 13:56

For the record I love my inlaws and friends but I do think some things are a bit nosy. I got a new car last year and didnt mention it to anyone as I was busy and it didnt come up in conversation. Usually had a black car on my drive, now had a white one. No fancier or anything special. Had a friend text THE NEXT DAY asking whose car was on my drive Shock. Its just not something I would ask someone. Or if I was desperate to know I would wait till I saw them and bring it up in conversation.
