DSIL snarky comments re my car me or being there for 2 days in Lockdown?

We live right by a nature reserve, lots of dog walkers, DSIL is one. She is rather, umm, curious, about goings on.

My car wasn't outside the house from Monday 9am till Tuesday evening.

She's messaged me to ask why 😵.

AIBU to tell her to mfyfob?

Tell her you were delivering a slim package to another part of the country.
The recipient insisted you stay the night!

luckylavender · 05/02/2021 13:08

I think that's quite a normal question

AppleKatie · 05/02/2021 13:09

So she knows your DH was away and thinks it’s ok to monitor your behaviour? Is that the subtext?

In which case yes, deny it and see what she does next 😂

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/02/2021 13:10

just reply "Aww god, please don't tell (insert DH's name here)"

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/02/2021 13:10

Answer a cheeky question with another question and keep going until she gets bored.

eg. Are you stalking me? Did you keep coming over to check whether my car had come back? Do you feel I should justify all my actions to you? Do you want me to tell you in advance if I intend to leave the house? Were you this nosy before the pandemic?

FetchezLaVache · 05/02/2021 13:10

Tell her you had a love tryst with an incredibly handsome man in whichever city it was, then see if she reports to your DH...

SabrinaMorningstar · 05/02/2021 13:11

I'd assume she was checking you were both ok. Do you really hate her? Because commenting on a car moving isn't a massive invasion of privacy. It's what passes for scintillating conversation when we're all in lockdown.

YoniAndGuy · 05/02/2021 13:11

I'd message back - 'You watch our house? Um, let's talk about that one first?'

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/02/2021 13:11

I wonder how she came to the conclusion that it was never there, rather than it just not being there when she happened to go by - did she keep going back to check?

Ch3rish · 05/02/2021 13:11

On the face of it that's an understandable question especially during lockdown but presumably there is a back story. Or are you wanting to keep it quiet that you broke lockdown rules, assuming you're in England,

QueenofLouisiana · 05/02/2021 13:12

TBF I’m so bored that if anyone goes out I’m happy to listen to them tell me every single detail. After months of barely leaving the house, my mother thinks that the price of petrol in the two local filling stations is a good topic for a 10 minute chat...

JingsMahBucket · 05/02/2021 13:12

I think you’re overreacting and she’s just trying to make conversation. I’d just tell her the laptop story. That could probably lead to good convo since you were able to break free of your 7 mile radius!

JingsMahBucket · 05/02/2021 13:13

Exactly!! People are bored.

''We were trying a new car cover, makes it invisible to thieves''.

RedskyBynight · 05/02/2021 13:14

How did SIL know? I could understand her walking her dog a couple of time and seeing your car not there, but how did she know it was missing for the whole of nearly 2 days, unless she set up camp outside? Or is she a dedicated twitcher interested in the migratory patterns of local birds, who's set up permanent residence in the local bird hide?

Wanderlust20 · 05/02/2021 13:15

Disagree with others, I get on with my SIL but she's also too nosey - I'm a private person so if anyone asked me this, I'd think it was odd. It's nobody's business! Just say you were out.

TwinkleStar88 · 05/02/2021 13:15

This post has reminded me about a nosy neighbour who told people on our road I was having an affair, my husband was away at the time and my BIL came over to help me with some repairs, the first time he didn’t have the correct part, so came again a few days later. She had literally told people I was having it off with another man. It wasn’t until a few months later that one of the neighbours told me, she was even writing statuses about me on Facebook, some people are bloody strange 🤔

Nacknick · 05/02/2021 13:15

He forgot his laptop...? What a muppet! 😂

Cadent · 05/02/2021 13:18

She has a grotesque little mind, doesn't she?

Don't respond.

Cadent · 05/02/2021 13:19

Are you perfect?!
EerieSilence · 05/02/2021 13:21

Ask: What car?
Answer: Your car, of course.
Ask: Are you sure it wasn't there?
Answer: Yes, I didn't see it there.
Ask: Are you sure you just didn't overlook it?

ktp100 · 05/02/2021 13:23

I'd have to tell her why (she sounds like the type to make a story up and spread t if not filled in) but I would tell her to mind her nose too - something like - Had to drive laptop to DH monday night - 5 hour drive so stayed over (all within Covid guidelines, before you ask) and drove back Tues eve. Please don't query my movements again. It's passive aggressive and, frankly, none of your business.

callmeadoctor · 05/02/2021 13:23

Im more shocked that you delivered his laptop all that way! (did you want to see him? Wink
