To think a sitting Labour MP should operate in line with their manifesto

Leeds Labour MP has confirmed he doesn’t think women should have any sex segregated spaces (despite the commitment in the last manifesto), and that anyone who disagrees is a bigot.

If you vote for a party, shouldn’t you be able to rely on your MP abiding by manifesto commitments?

Also, what kind of woman hating psychopath thinks that refuges and prisons should be mixed sex?

I don't think he cares about mixed sex facilities being less safe for women.

PotholeParadies · 04/02/2021 21:54

This is his latest:

I don’t need the vote of bigots thanks. Gender Neutral Toilets have existed for years and there’s no evidence that they are any more or less safe than segregated Toilets. You’re just looking for an outlet for your bigotry. Please look elsewhere.

@NiceGerbil

'There were approximately 77.42 thousand men and 3.41 thousand women in prison in the United Kingdom in 2020.'

That's more than 20 men to every woman.

Crikey. That's pretty frightening!
HettieMillia · 04/02/2021 22:02

I don’t need the vote of bigots thanks

Translation: he doesn't want the votes of the many women who are going to uphold their legal rights and safeguards.

Justanotherlurker · 04/02/2021 22:02

Well, with the ACLU fact check stuff, this is IDPOL on steriods now, no nuance was applied before so it is the slippery slope that some of us 'right wing bigots' where trying to raise with how being concerned about Tumblr level activism was getting a bit more mainstream, and not wanting my DD or DS on the site.

It's only going to be a few more years until the meme of I identiify as an attack helicopter. There is no difference between sexes so Cubs should allow Girls, boys football teams should allow girls, this is just the slippery slope that was predicted.

Pure undiluted IDPOL that some of the triabalistic voters refuse to accept.

Coffeeandcocopops · 04/02/2021 22:02

What’s his view on women’s sport?

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 04/02/2021 22:04

This labour MP is the reason that we're going to have the same government for a long period! I voted labour in the last election, but can increasingly see why people view the conservatives as being more sensible. Mixed sex prisons?!?

ilovesooty · 04/02/2021 22:05

He's the Shadow Minister for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

tttigress · 04/02/2021 22:06

Kind of feels like Labour us still eating themselves.

Whether you are for or any Labour, we do need a credible opposition to hold the Tories to account. Something that was sadly lacking under Corbyn, and news like this makes you feel it is continuing.

Angelwings77 · 04/02/2021 22:06

I think there needs to be some new billboards in Leeds, telling the 51% of the population exactly what he thinks they deserve

katiegoestoaldi · 04/02/2021 22:07

He is my MP. I voted for him. Dismayed

Mine too. Won't be voting for him again

HettieMillia · 04/02/2021 22:07

There were approximately 77.42 thousand men and 3.41 thousand women in prison in the United Kingdom in 2020

Yep. And I think one in 50 are sex offenders and close to half of them identify as transgender.

HettieMillia · 04/02/2021 22:09

I voted labour in the last election, but can increasingly see why people view the conservatives as being more sensible

I did too, but I won't be again. They've lost my vote. Can't see labour ever being a credible option in my life time tbh.

ilovesooty · 04/02/2021 22:11

I'm glad he isn't my MP because I don't think he should have said what he said in the way he said it. Calling concerned women bigots isn't going to help his cause.

I still couldn't cast my vote on one issue though, let alone in favour of the Tories.

Winesalot · 04/02/2021 22:12

To not even acknowledge that some people rightfully have concerns and calls them bigoted.

Hopefully he’ll be in for a shock next election. He should be removed from shadow minister for sports pronto though.

PotholeParadies · 04/02/2021 22:13

If you disagree with Alex's answer to the question which was Do you agree that there should be sex-segregated facilities for women in hospitals, schools, refuges and prisons?

could you please email your own MP and ask him or her the same question?

Copy in the party leader of your constituency MP. I think it's time we made our voices heard.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/02/2021 22:16

I think there needs to be some new billboards in Leeds, telling the 51% of the population exactly what he thinks they deserve

As someone said on Twitter, save them until the next General Election. I'd be leafleting his constituency. Arrogant misogynist.

HettieMillia · 04/02/2021 22:17

I still couldn't cast my vote on one issue though, let alone in favour of the Tories

It's not just one issue though is it. The ideology behind it feeds in to prisons, schools, single sex provision, refuges, social care, short lists, sport, health care, education, safeguarding for children. It's massive.

katiegoestoaldi · 04/02/2021 22:18

The Yorkshire Post have noticed it

To think a sitting Labour MP should operate in line with their manifesto
ilovesooty · 04/02/2021 22:20

Of course it impacts on other areas. However I cannot even imagine how there can be any justification for voting Tory if you care about poverty or vulnerable people, nor see how any section of society can benefit from continuing Conservative governments.

NiceGerbil · 04/02/2021 22:20

They have only mentioned toilets.

Someone on Twitter (I'm not) could point out to the Yorkshire post person that he said no to women have single sex prisons, refuges etc

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/02/2021 22:20

There is evidence that gender neutral toilets and changing rooms are less safe for women and girls Confused

NiceGerbil · 04/02/2021 22:21

I will never vote conservative.

The alternatives are closed to me as well though because of this.

So much for democracy.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/02/2021 22:21

Sorry, mixed sex. "Gender neutral" is meaningless.

HettieMillia · 04/02/2021 22:27

However I cannot even imagine how there can be any justification for voting Tory if you care about poverty or vulnerable people, nor see how any section of society can benefit from continuing Conservative governments.

No. I don't agree. I care about those things. But I care about women. And women are vulnerable. And women live in poverty. And this impacts on women too. Labour will never help those people. Why do you think working class labour voted Tory? But we can all choose who we want to vote for. It's supposed to be a democracy after all. I don't want a Biden style government. So I'm voting Tory. You vote for whoever you want to. Labour have no chance of making a comeback anyway. 🤷‍♀️
