I will be standing outside my house with my head bowed to remember Tom, and all the others that have lost their lives during this pandemic due to covid directly, or indirectly.

My hands will not meet. I don’t care what Supreme Leader Johnson orders us to do.

AIBU?

Boris Johnson was just utterly vile at PMQs about a number of issues, including cladding, but managed a bleeding heart simpering about 'leading the nation' re TM.

So no, I won't be joining in Johnson's wildly inappropriate political appropriation of death(s) in any way.

Doomsdayiscoming · 03/02/2021 13:02

@CaptainSirTomMooreismyhero

I don’t care what Supreme Leader Johnson orders us to do. Aaah. The Prime Minister has urged people to join in clapping on their doorsteps at 6 p.m. tonight as a mark of respect for Captain Sir Tom Moore.

OP, there is a big difference between the verbs 'urge' and 'order'. Did you go to school? No-one is ordering you to do anything. I don't think anyone will care if you don't put your hands together, bow your head, don't bow your head. People won't notice - they will be busy doing their own thing.

Haha. Imagine he ordered us to do it.

This is as close as you can get without being in 1984.

I won’t be clapping either. I had a lot of respect for Captain Tom but the way BJ and co are shamelessly using him and now his death to look like they’re not sacks of shit leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Like those people on social media who insist that if you don’t like and share some picture or other you actively hate cancer sufferers and hope more people get cancer.

x2boys · 03/02/2021 13:03

It doesn't they have already had a minutes silence in the house of commons today,if people wish to observe a minutes silence ,that's their perogative and they can do it wherever they choose.

Nicolastuffedone · 03/02/2021 13:04

Do it or don’t. Do you honestly think by not clapping Boris Johnson will lose any sleep over it? It was a suggestion not an order. No-one will really care what you do tbh

BullOx · 03/02/2021 13:04

@stairway

Donate to his charities or avoid unnecessary travelling to reduce the spread of mutant variants would be a better way to protect android honour people like him.
Like a trip to Barbados?!

OP I don't understand why people are being so rude to you. I'm going to clap for wonderful Captain Tom, but if you'd prefer to just think of him quietly instead that's fine too. Please don't take these narky comments to heart.

Beaniecats · 03/02/2021 13:05

I don't think so, no

Throughhistory · 03/02/2021 13:06

Johnson politicised this by going against the will of Tom’s family. Has he asked them if this is what they, or Tom wanted

Well which is it? Because those two sentences together are somewhat contradictory.

EvieBoo2 · 03/02/2021 13:06

@mumofone2019

Am I the only one who finds it really bizarre to clap someones death? It just is very odd to me.

And I really do not see the need to stand on your doorstep to observe a silence, surely this can be done in your home, unless you need others to see you doing it?

I'm clapping his amazing life, not his death.
stairway · 03/02/2021 13:07

BullOxI do think avoiding Barbados is a sensible idea, his death shows just how unnecessary travels kills people like him.

LEELULUMPKIN · 03/02/2021 13:08

@BabblativeBean so all your neighbours and those you have told on here can see what a caring virtue signaller you are.

Doingitaloneandproud · 03/02/2021 13:09

I'll be clapping tonight, I stopped the Thursday clap they had before but I'll do a one off clap tonight for this.

DoctorYang · 03/02/2021 13:11

I have also seen events created on FB to clap for him Thursday at 8pm, Friday at 6pm and 8pm. Total mess.

Agree entirely about the virtue signalling aspect of clapping outside, although some might say it's bringing a separated community together I guess.

Regarding clapping, it's certainly become normal at sporting events - to clap in celebration of a life rather than the sombre nature of a minute's silence.

WorraLiberty · 03/02/2021 13:12

@Doomsdayiscoming

Wow. Subtlety is lost on you guys.

By clapping at the suggestion of Johnson you are indirectly supporting him, and his Govt.

By not clapping you can still pay your respects (if that is what you wish to do), or you can sit at home and donate to charity.

If no one claps tonight it sends a message to the incompetent fools that they do not have public support. And that they cannot use the death of good people to try and cover up for their woeful behaviour.

And that they cannot use the death of good people to try and cover up for their woeful behaviour.

But you can use a 100 year old veteran's death to have a pop at the Government on a public forum?

Wow.

x2boys · 03/02/2021 13:12

Whilst I agree travelling to Barbados in the middle of a pandemic isn't advisable ,I think at 100 years of age you know that your life is coming to an end so why not go on holiday .

Indeed @WorraLiberty the irony of the Op and some of the other posters 🙄

PandemicPalava · 03/02/2021 13:14

I don't get all this doorstep stuff. I am quite capable of thinking with reverence about things in my own house.

stillonthattightrope · 03/02/2021 13:14

@TheChip

Would it not be better to do it in the comfort of your home?
Because then no-one will see them which is the point of all this performative bollocks.
Abraxan · 03/02/2021 13:14

Do what you like.

Clap, don't clap.
Stand outside, don't stand outside.
Have a minute's silence, or don't.
Remember or not.

No one has been ordered to do anything.
None of it is compulsory.

I don't think anyone is going to really care about what you or others choose to do anyway.

RaspberryCoulis · 03/02/2021 13:15

I won't be participating with either the clapping or the silence.

Me Too I've only ever seen people stand silent sometimes blessing themselves as the funeral cortege passes.
