I will be standing outside my house with my head bowed to remember Tom, and all the others that have lost their lives during this pandemic due to covid directly, or indirectly.

My hands will not meet. I don’t care what Supreme Leader Johnson orders us to do.

AIBU?

No will not clap will remember him when it happens to me. I have donated to his foundation which I think he would prefer.

captaintom.org/

He was a doer not a clapper so I will respect that.

stackemhigh · 03/02/2021 14:12

I agree with @x2boys* grow up. This is nothing but an attention-seeking thread.

As @TheSpottedDog and a number of others have said, no-one gives a shit what you do. So why you felt the need to announce it on the internet is just baffling frankly..... confused

Bet you never expected 75% of posters to say YABU! grin

I agree. Nothing but respect for Captain Moore but hate all this virtue signalling crap.

Badlo · 03/02/2021 14:12

I’m not doing anything.

stackemhigh · 03/02/2021 14:13

He was a doer not a clapper so I will respect that.

Amen. Less of the bowing and more of the silent doing.

Quaagars · 03/02/2021 14:13

Why the dramatics? It looks ridiculous.

Was just a bit gobsmacked that people seem to think others are clapping his death.

nevermind clapping like a souped-up seal

Grin

and that's not dramatic and a tad hyperbolic lol?!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 03/02/2021 14:13

Ah! Is this one of those ‘claps’ which only count if you stand outside your front door in full view of your neighbours whilst Mrs Smith from no. 33 takes the official Kind and Caring People register? And if you don’t appear you get slated on Facebook?

ParkheadParadise · 03/02/2021 14:13

@MrsMercedes

just had notification our store is to hold the silence. ok, we are local and were Toms local store, but we are a huge chain so stores in scotland and throughout uk have been told to do the same
I can't imagine that happening in Scotland. Nothing about it on the lunchtime news.
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 03/02/2021 14:14

Perhaps. But not attention-seeking. Grin

Absolutely.

I can already see MIL's 18:05 facebook post stating 'what a wonderful turnout' that she did for every other clap.

She's an absolute virtue signaller.

PussGirl · 03/02/2021 14:17

Clapping for this that & the other bloody thing is meaningless shite & draws attention away from the real issues.

How about funding the NHS / schools / Police / fire service properly?

thegreylady · 03/02/2021 14:17

Do whatever you feel is appropriate. I am sorry for the death of this inspirational man but he was 100 years old, had pneumonia before Covid and has left an amazing legacy. May he Rest in Peace, he will never be forgotten just as, in over 100,000 households in the UK alone there is a name that will be remembered.

There's a guy who makes comedy sketches of these, bitching about the neighbours who haven't made the effort. I hope he does a Captain Tom edition.

FatCatThinCat · 03/02/2021 14:19

De Piffle needs to get off Captain Toms coat tails.

MrsSimonBasset · 03/02/2021 14:22

@TheSpottedDog It’s just so distasteful that BJ would use Captain Tom’s death to try and score some Brownie points. Why the hell is he in his role as PM urging us to clap outside? Should be a personal decision

lucywho123 · 03/02/2021 14:23

Yea I won't be doing it. Poor Tom and the other 100,000+ people that have died as a result of an out of control virus aswell as being partly down to an inept Government. Hope they all RIP

PenfoldPenny · 03/02/2021 14:25

@MostIneptThatEverStepped

I have bucketloads of respect for Captain Tom but that's a no from me.

In fact as it's coming from Boris it's a FUCK NO

This!
Devlesko · 03/02/2021 14:26

I won't be clapping or minutes silence.
I will light a candle maybe weekend, to remember all those who have lost their lives.

Surely the street WhatsApp group. 🤷‍♂️

Reading on here, it seems like every sodding street has one now. I'm surprised estate agents don't write "Active street WhatsApp group" in a property's particulars.

Sweet666 · 03/02/2021 14:28

This is cringe

littlepattilou · 03/02/2021 14:29

@Sweet666

This is cringe
No-one is forcing you to do it.
Maryann1975 · 03/02/2021 14:29

I must be the only person who finds the whole thing cringeworthy. All these people talking about 'Tom' as if they personally knew him.

I’m afraid people like you are an absolute gift to the government. Captain Tom Moore raised an incredible amount, but the reality is he was a kind person trying to raise a modest amount to do his bit. Social and viral media did the rest - and the government lapped it up. A centenarian and a WW2 veteran rolled into one; you couldn’t have got a better poster boy (or pensioner) for ‘We’re All in This Together, Britain’ if you tried. Politicians could wax lyrical about his spirit and how he represented everything that makes Britain great, while the public donated to fund a service their taxes (under)fund anyway. Anyone who dared to highlight that maybe the NHS shouldn’t need a charity fundraiser on this scale was seen as criticising lovely old Captain Tom - already so beloved that he no longer needed a surname

I agree with both of these comments.

Tom reminded me a lot of my late grandfather, both veterans, both really good, upstanding gentlemen, who always looked smart and cared about those around them and the good of society. I mourned him and grieved for him, because he was my grandfather, in the same way that Toms grandchildren will be doing today. I do not grieve for Tom in the same way, but it seems I am in the minority. I didn’t know him and I feel the same about his death as I do about the other 109,000 people who have died of COVID (which of course is really sad).

Raising so much money for charity is of course amazing, but many, many people have also Done activities and raised money for charity through the pandemic but haven’t been picked up by the media, which is the reason Tom raised so much, because the media loved him.

Not a chance I will be clapping at 6pm because the incompetent government think it is a good way to divert the nations attention from what they are doing.

Swimmingiscancelled · 03/02/2021 14:30

Much as Captain Tom was a decent human being and will be sadly missed by his family and friends, I find it so disrespectful to the 100,000 other people who have died that he should be singled out.

Why did we not have the downing st flag at half mast and a minutes national silence when we passed that marker and yet it is saved up for one person.

Duckberg · 03/02/2021 14:31

Yay, pointless bandwagon.

Livingtothefull · 03/02/2021 14:31

I don't mean any disrespect to Captain Tom at all, he richly deserves the praise he has received. But how about we remember all the 1,449 people who died of Covid yesterday as well? But that death toll could reflect badly on the Government and we can't have that.

I find the way that Johnson is using Captain Tom's death to score political points utterly distasteful.

Dita73 · 03/02/2021 14:36

It’s ridiculous. A load of hysterical cobblers. Obviously I won’t be doing it
