To think my friend has taken me for a mug?

Back in December, I made an online listing for my 2018 MacBook on Facebook marketplace and received a ton of 'lowball' offers or people asking me to drive an hour plus to deliver it to their place. A friend of mine messaged me, telling me that her current laptop had broken down and that she's having trouble finding work because of that (she's a freelancer).

She asked if I could 'sell' it to her first and that she'd pay it back in instalments after paying off her kids' stuff etc, before telling me that she would get back to me because she had to calculate everything. She eventually came up with a payment plan that lasted almost 2 years and I told her that I'd just give it to her as I didn't need the money and that if I were to bring it in for 'trade-in' I was told that I'd get basically nothing for it anyway.

So I dropped it off in her mailbox, and I thought that that was that. Fast forward to last week, she was sending me screenshots on her computer, and it was on a Windows laptop! I asked her in a semi-joking way, oh, did the MacBook spoil and she said that no, she's just using her old laptop and that she's using the one I sent her for 'storage'. If I had known she didn't really need it I definitely wouldn't have given it to her!

I'm not going to ask for it back, of course. But AIBU to be a bit miffed off by all this?

It doesn't always mean you're blocked on WhatsApp but if there's poor WiFi it can take a while to turn to two ticks but it sounds like she's trying to block and avoid you that's for sure. It's frustrating as you'll likely never get an answer but the good thing is I think today she's got a serious shock and knows she's been rumbled

wifterwafter · 03/02/2021 22:15

You've rumbled her and she's blocked you. She's not a nice person.

Bluntness100 · 03/02/2021 22:21

One grey tick means undelivered

I think she’s blocked you on WhatsApp and Facebook.

That’s as cunty as it gets. I hope you’re ok. 💐

Morris125 · 03/02/2021 22:21

Wow OP, I’m fuming for you. If I were you, I’d make a Facebook post outlining what she has done and to warn others not to be fooled by her. Even get people to share it publicly so then her cuntish behaviour is exposed to others!

Embarrasedaf · 03/02/2021 22:28

You definitely need to expose her on Facebook

jelly79 · 03/02/2021 22:30

Wow that's low! Hope you are OK OP!!

1Morewineplease · 03/02/2021 22:41

@Bluntness100

Calling her out will just make her dig in further, she will act outraged,

Much better to scare her that apple can trace it as it’s still connected to the ops account and via isp locator. Everyone would think “shit, what is that possible?” Unless they were very techy.

That would scare her
o8O8O8o · 03/02/2021 22:52

and you have to move on
ultimately I guess one should have compassion for the MLM'ers?
She'll likely be emboldened by this 'win' and try for a bigger scam next time, maybe with someone who wont let it go!

grapewine · 03/02/2021 22:53

She's a lying, stealing cunt. I don't normally do this, but I'd put her on blast publicly on Facebook. There's no way I'd stand for this.

Embarrasedaf · 03/02/2021 22:56

scare her that apple can trace it as it’s still connected to the ops account and via isp locator.

No one would believe that - Jesus Christ. You don’t need to be “techy” to know that’s not possible either. Apple doesn’t provide that information to law enforcement without a court order, so why would they do that for OP? Anyone with an iPhone and a brain cell would know that’s bullshit.

TokyoSushi · 03/02/2021 23:02

I've just come across this thread, I want to say She's sold it! Cheeky cow! But I see that's already been said.

So sorry OP, you did a lovely thing.

Bluntness100 · 03/02/2021 23:07

Apple doesn’t provide that information to law enforcement without a court order, so why would they do that for OP

Because it’s her laptop.

Embarrasedaf · 03/02/2021 23:24

@Bluntness100 No. If Apple won’t do so in major crime trials without a court order, they certainly will never do so in this situation. It’s precisely why “find my” and “activation lock” features exist - if you don’t have these features enabled, you’re on your own if your device is lost/stolen. Apple doesn’t trace serial numbers, let alone the massive privacy violation of tracking IP addresses.

Sometimes if you’re not knowledgeable on a subject, you don’t have to comment you know. It’s okay to keep quiet. You have an awful habit of overtaking threads.

Guiltypleasures001 · 03/02/2021 23:37

Hi op

Does she have any cash converter type places in her area? Just a thought as they list on eBay as well

SoVery · 03/02/2021 23:40

OMG! You can't let her get away with this! Unbelievable behaviour! Can you go to her house and confront her there? Or contact someone higher up in her mlm scheme thing?

SheilaWilcox · 03/02/2021 23:41

Just read whole thread.
Sorry this has happened OP. When you are kind and nice it hits hard when you realise others aren't and that you think more of them than they do of you. (Just curious, did you often end up paying for lunch too? Is that when her lunch breaks started coinciding with yours?)

What goes around comes around. She doesn't deserve a good friend like you.

o8O8O8o · 03/02/2021 23:41

She seems to have no shame, there's no sign of her backing down
I wonder how she will react if you ever get her cornered....🤔

AquaTorfana · 03/02/2021 23:44

Another vote for her having sold it. Tell her yours isn't working and can you borrow it back until yours comes back from the shop in 3-4 weeks.

notapizzaeater · 03/02/2021 23:47

What a cf, I'd just turn up and ask for it back

SteppinOutwithMyBaby · 03/02/2021 23:50

@PenAndPaperback Sorry if this has already been said, but before ditching it, wouldn't she have checked with you to see if you had purchased an extended warranty? You may or may not have purchased the extended warranty, but wouldn't one have at least asked?

I know with my more expensive Apple items like a laptop I always purchase the extended warranty, which gives me, I think, three years. I don't with things like an iPad or my phone.

A bit of a credibility gap on her part there.

AquaTorfana · 03/02/2021 23:51

Sorry OP, just read the whole thread. What an absolutely awful human and certainly no friend.

Shadeelane · 04/02/2021 00:23

What a horrible person. Bit irrelevant but the reason her friends have friended you is probably cos they are also MLM bots. It's what they do. Dunno what I'd do in this situation. I'd be livid and want to out her but this could possibly backfire. Such a coward blocking you as well😔

douliket · 04/02/2021 00:59

Just message her and tell her the screen of your own laptop has smashed or that the the charging port isn't working and tel her you need the max book back

Sola123 · 04/02/2021 01:09

That's really awful. I wouldn't be able to let it go. I would call her up and if she didn't answer, I would go round to her house.

Smallgoon · 04/02/2021 01:21

I mean, you did give it to her. Yes you believed a cock and bull story, but technically any ownership or right you had ceased the moment you handed it over. This is more of a lesson for you to not be so naive in future. As somebody has previously mentioned, she saw you coming!
