To ask what conspiracy theories you actually believe are true?

Following on from the thread where OP was looking for conspiracy theories for her kids to look at, I was wondering whether anyone actually believes any of the outlandish conspiracies.

We’ve all read about how people believe that Elvis didn’t die/Paul McCartney did die/the royals are all lizards/the earth is flat. But I’ve never encountered anyone who actually believes any of them, only people who talk about people who (apparently) believe in them.

So, what conspiracies do you actually believe and why?

Epstein's 'suicide'. Also have doubts about Dr. David Kelly.

The more elaborate ones are really silly: 9.11 being one that instantly springs to mind. As for Diana, who would want to kill her? Her former in-laws had already successfully branded her as crackers (and she helped) so nothing she said would ever be taken seriously. Had she lived, she'd probably have ended up an outcast and the butt of people's jokes like Fergie. The only person she was a liability to was herself!

And I'm still chortling over the 'Di's death predicted in Morrissey lyrics' one too!

Cam77 · 28/01/2021 09:26

@GwendolineMarysLaces
It’s readily apparent to anyone who has spent a few years living outside the Western media bubble. I’m guessing you haven’t and so you don’t see the way it manipulates narratives daily. And I’m not talking grand conspiracy here, just daily news about other countries, virtually goodies and baddies/cops and robbers type shit for the designated Bad Guy du jour....but you actually swallow it. Cool.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 28/01/2021 09:27

About big conspiracies being impossible to keep quiet though..... if your family is threatened, you'd keep quiet. If you're painted as mentally ill, you'll keep quiet, because you won't be believed. If your role is minor and you don't know there is a conspiracy, you might never connect the dots.

And whole nations can be duped and ruled by fear. The Stasi used all kinds of tactics to keep people in check.

A Roumanian friend grew up believing Ceausescu (?) and his wife died in a helicopter crash, and only learned the truth when she came to the UK.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 28/01/2021 09:29

Quick thing re the Meghan Markle bump conspiracy upgrade - her tummy doesn't look any bigger and as a PP pointed out, people do look a bit embarrassed so could the popping sound have been that very normal pregnant lady thing which is a big trump?

My own theory to possibly add (I'm only up to p12 so apologies if I'm repeating anyone else) is there's no way only 3000 and odd people died in Wuhan. The authorities were sealing people in apartment blocks and the official numbers reflect a slightly bad year for flu?! No chance.

Papatron · 28/01/2021 09:30

@Cam77

Another interesting none since people mentioned how money works. I do have my suspicions that the masses are kept intentionally largely financially illiterate. There's no reason why all teenagers couldn't and shouldn't be taught about investments, stock market, personal debt etc. It's all straightforward enough. A week would do cover it. Except the finanical doesn't want Joe Bloggs gaining 10% capital every year sitting on his backside just by putting a bit of his wage in the S&P500, working a four day week and retiring at 50.
Wait! Joe Bloggs here. I can do that? ShockGrin You sound a bit like one of those 'invest in my Bitcoin scam' people. I'm no expert on the stock market but I'm sure it's not that easy to just get a guaranteed 10% return on your money. If it was, why would anyone start any business at all? And why would anyone buy government bonds which offer a lower interest rate than your wonderful stock market opportunity? Investments can go down as well as up. Anyway, most people in the U.K. are doing some form of this by buying property and expecting it to increase in value every year. But I don't see many able to retire at 50 or work a four day week.

we are existing in a slightly different dimension since they switched on the large hadron collider and it created a black hole. Thats why David Bowie is dead and Snape and everythings been shit ever since

MistressoftheDarkSide · 28/01/2021 09:33

Some people think the LHC has something to do with Mandela effect.....

Cam77 · 28/01/2021 09:34

@Hammonds
From my limited experience, I think flat earthism has a deep psychological aspect. Deep down they know it’s BS, but it’s like they love having something totally “out there” to believe in and they love the community/club/religion that goes with it. In many cases it’s less conspiracy or symptom of being off your rocker and more crazy new religion/society for the bored and mischievous. Just my take.

Sbowiegirl · 28/01/2021 09:36

JFK, Epstein and David Kelly.

A couple of people have mentioned Stephen Fry. I know he is lauded by lots of people, but I really think something is odd about him

Cam77 · 28/01/2021 09:39

I find the Mandela effect extremely unconvincing. I mean all the “big” examples are just so marginal and low profile.

AlternativePerspective · 28/01/2021 09:40

So why have you made a thread that’s going to draw examples of what people believe in. You invite people to share what they believe in then get sickened by the responses because just because people believe them doesn’t mean they’re not sick.

In the same way that believing in certain conspiracies makes people batshit, such as the flat earth one, or the royals as lizards, although thus far I haven’t seen anyone say they believe that one.

Conspiracy theories are out there, it’s always interesting to talk about them and to wonder why people believe certain things which either couldn’t possibly be true or fly in the face of absolute humanity.

LittleBoPeep95 I dont either .Such a great Musician .Really like the Acoustic version of "Man Who Sold The World" David Bowies hit gets a completely fresh approach by Kurt on you tube .There was a theory that he joined "Club 27". Many stars had died at this age having been killed as their music meant more sales when dead! Sounds far fetched to me as surely they would have made more music if they had lived ! Janis Joplin. Jimi Hendrix .Brian Jones to name a few.

Manth0914 · 28/01/2021 09:40

You mean from green to blue... that was a thing, wasn't it?!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 28/01/2021 09:41

Novichok nerve agent. Anyone who comes into contact with that substance should not survive to tell the tale. There's no antidote anywhere in existence ...

Bet the Russians were left scratching their heads wondering 'Hmmm, how come those people we poisoned on UK soil are still alive!'

Good going, five eyes ... Grin

rosetylersbiggun · 28/01/2021 09:43

My cousin worked for Al Fayed at Harrods, and I would not trust a single word out of that man's mouth. He's a liar and a predator.

It's interesting that people believe there's a vast conspiracy that involves the British Government/Royal Family bribing all manner of foreign officials and even Diana's old friends, large numbers of people who have no reason to be loyal to the BRF keeping their secrets for decades, but the much more logical 'conspiracy theory' - that a pathological liar and grieving father desperately trying to link himself to Diana and keep himself in the public eye, waging a war to get British citizenship, would make up a lie about his son having a much closer relationship to a beloved princess than he really did, in order to gain attention and sympathy?

I'm not a Diana expert or anything but wasn't she supposed to be madly in love with some other bloke, and just using Dodi to make him jealous?

One royal conspiracy theory that I do believe is that the Cambridge office leaked nasty stories about Harry and Meghan so the press wouldn't cover William's alleged (cough couch) affair with Rose Hanbury.

Rockinmomma · 28/01/2021 09:43

@DraculasMa I believe there is a protected, elitist paedophile ring that operates worldwide with impunity.
this!
And it angers me that these people are so rich they pay and control the media too
Epstein being caught very nearly outed them, of course he was murdered!

cyclingmad · 28/01/2021 09:45

Well gamers in the US have shown how easy it is to make money by stopping hedge funds shorting Gamestop.

Now they are they dont like and are trying to shut people down by halting trading, banning threads so people cannot communicate 🙄 all because they got exposed and lost billions

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 28/01/2021 09:47

I do have my suspicions that the masses are kept intentionally largely financially illiterate.

I'm with you on that. Dystopian fiction might only be fiction, but a lot is eerily prescient and the threat posed by an informed, educated populace is clear and present.

I visited the Imperial War Museum not long before lockdown and looked at the beautiful letters WWII evacuees had sent home to their parents. All had correct sentence construction, spelling and punctuation. Then I look at some of the work turned in by today's undergraduates and despair. Some of their writing is nowhere near up to that of those 8-year-olds whose very moving letters I saw.

If there was a concerted conspiracy to monumentally fuck up UK education to the highest degree possible, it couldn't have done a better job!

I don't 'swallow' everything. And I'd argue that many conspiracy theorists do, but because the things they believe are not mainstream, they convince themselves that they are the enlightened ones.

Littlewhitedove2 · 28/01/2021 09:48

What happened to Brittney Murphy is just such a strange mystery and the more you dig into it, the stranger is becomes!

dottiedodah · 28/01/2021 09:49

Why would it need to be a secret that Barack Obama smoked?

ImAncient · 28/01/2021 09:49

@dottiedodah

As far as Diana went ,so many worries about her .She was the first person to divorce in the Royal Family. And her interview with Martin Bashir showed the Royals in a poor light.She also recalled being followed by Govt forces (Although she may have just been paranoid of course) Pictures of her and Dodi Fayed were embarassing for the Royals as well .She was also rumoured to be pregnant by him ,although her great friend Rosa Monkton denied this,as they were very close .
No she wasn’t. PMargaret, Princess Anne? Their husbands weren’t killed were they?

Apologies I thought I’d pressed send so couple of pages behind in case anyone has said the same!

Pimlicojo · 28/01/2021 09:50

I'm just a little bit younger than Diana and clearly remember the period leading up to her death. She spent that summer courting the paparazzi and posing on yachts in the Med. I seem to remember that a couple of weeks before her death she said something like 'wait until you see what I'm going to do next' to the press. She was very unpopular and getting negative press and perceived by many as behaving very foolishly.

And then she died. And now she's the eternally beautiful young princess. We'll never know what she or her life would be like now.

So there was no benefit in her being killed by anyone. I think she got into a car being driven by a drunk driver who drove too fast. And didn't wear a seatbelt.
