To ask what conspiracy theories you actually believe are true?

Following on from the thread where OP was looking for conspiracy theories for her kids to look at, I was wondering whether anyone actually believes any of the outlandish conspiracies.

We’ve all read about how people believe that Elvis didn’t die/Paul McCartney did die/the royals are all lizards/the earth is flat. But I’ve never encountered anyone who actually believes any of them, only people who talk about people who (apparently) believe in them.

So, what conspiracies do you actually believe and why?

@Lifeinaonesie

If there are alien portals to other planets but my parents still can't get high speed broadband then I'm going to be really annoyed Grin
this made me properly, actually lol
MellowMelly · 28/01/2021 07:48

@Lifeinaonesie Grin I’ll just hop into the portal to our Mars head office and see if I can get that sorted for your parents...

Being serious for a moment, I think there’s an inherent need in people to seek out explanations for things we don’t understand. Thousands of years ago people tried to explain natural phenomena by blaming it on the gods/other supernatural causes, but now we know better and science has helped us understand these things.

However I think that need to “explain” still persists in people so we’ve ended up going down the route of conspiracy theories instead. The simplest explanation is usually the right one - accident/human error/etc but people like to try and look for patterns which sends them down the rabbit hole of CS.

I mentioned it earlier in the thread but I highly recommend listening to The Infinite Monkey Cage episode about conspiracy theories. This is the summary:

Brian Cox and Robin Ince are joined on stage by comedian Shazia Mirza, science writer and cancer researcher Dr David Robert Grimes and psychologist Prof Karen Douglas to look at the weird world of conspiracy theories. From Flat Earth believers to people who refuse to accept that humans have ever been to the moon, why is fiction often so much easier to believe than fact - and does it matter? They discuss the psychology and profile of people who are more likely to believe in conspiracies and the devastating effect some, like the anti-vaccine movement, have had on public health. They ask whether being irrational is our default setting and how to convince the most hard-core believers with the power of evidence and critical thinking. Although they would say that wouldn’t they?

Aaah but surely if you believe in these conspiracy theories, to you they ARE real so not conspriacy???

MellowMelly · 28/01/2021 07:50

@ImAncient she was obviously part alien then Grin

Hammonds · 28/01/2021 08:04

@sashh

He also said that all Rhesus negative blood groups are linked to ancient alien blood so therefore aliens have been living (and breeding) with us and have been using the portals to travel here.

I'm part alien? Cool.

Yes you have the blood line of the Gods Wink

I am not into conspiracy theories at all and some posts here are bonkers. As a real, actual university researcher it's annoying that people talk about watching random you tube videos as 'research'.

But, as somebody has mentioned earlier quite cryptically I do think the medical link between Jill Dando and The Duchess of Cambridge is interesting. It's an obviously odd fact without even needing to 'research' further by reading nutty blogs or watching you tube videos.

Tbh if the royals had wanted to kill off Diana they could have easily made it look like a suicide.

She was known to have MH issues, I think a suicide would have been seen as entirely plausible by everyone

I think a lot of Nazis did manage to escape to Argentina at the end of WW2 and they have been allowed to live there by the Argentinan government ever since. It's not secret that the regime was sympathetic and its a huge country, which had a good sized German population anyway at that time, and which would be fairly easy to hide people in.

Cam77 · 28/01/2021 08:11

Agree with the other 100s who have said 9/11. Quite possibly they knew something big was planned and failed to stop it or didn't try too hard. Also, agree about the pentagon being hit. They certainly put off a thorough investigation as long as humanly possible, which even then was halfhearted. And then of course Diana. Horrible family. Extremely Powerful. Who knows what they may have done to such a trouble maker.

Cam77 · 28/01/2021 08:13

Of course one more - Dr David Kelly. I have no doubt the British services can be and have been just as dark as the Russian ones.

No. Not when she was loving the high life on yachts with Dodi.
meltedgalaxy · 28/01/2021 08:16

I'm shocked that two planes could do the damage they did to the twin towers, but some of the conspiracies are wild.

Jon Benet Ramsey isn't right. I think the family are involved.

Sandyhook school shooting, no I don't think it's fake but I do think there was more to it that we'll never know about

AlternativePerspective · 28/01/2021 08:16

No. Not when she was loving the high life on yachts with Dodi. she was perceived as having gone off the rails at that point though.

One I came across the other day was that Fidel Castro is Justin Trudeau's father. They had to officially deny the rumour apparently. I don't believe it but they do look alike.

oh holy fuck we're on to Sandy Hook conspiracies... what the fucking fuck is wrong with you?
Cam77 · 28/01/2021 08:19

Another interesting none since people mentioned how money works. I do have my suspicions that the masses are kept intentionally largely financially illiterate. There's no reason why all teenagers couldn't and shouldn't be taught about investments, stock market, personal debt etc. It's all straightforward enough. A week would do cover it. Except the finanical doesn't want Joe Bloggs gaining 10% capital every year sitting on his backside just by putting a bit of his wage in the S&P500, working a four day week and retiring at 50.

Cam77 · 28/01/2021 08:19

Or happy as she had escaped from the royals in to a family that could have offered her the same style of life?

I never bought in to the unhinged off the rails women that was constructed to turn the public against her.

ImAncient · 28/01/2021 08:21

This is Mitchell & Webb spoof on Diana conspiracy

User12340987 · 28/01/2021 08:24

What’s are the Sandyhook school shooting conspiracies? I’ve not heard of those

AlternativePerspective · 28/01/2021 08:26

But plenty of the public did turn against her.

If she’d simply “killed herself” the public would have thought it sad but that would have been all. By dying in a car crash there was an unprecedented outpouring of grief, and anger towards both the press and the royals. There was nothing to be achieved by that.

Added to which are we to assume that all this stuff has been kept quiet from William and Harry or do people think that they’re in on the knowledge that their mother was murdered and are happy to keep quiet about it?

AlternativePerspective · 28/01/2021 08:29

It baffles me that people form and believe conspiracy theories about events such as Sandyhook.

I think it’s one thing believing that the moon landings may have been faked/that there’s something dodgy about area 52/that 9/11 was something more than we would believe. In those instances the outcomes aren’t likely to be different e.g. if the moon landings did or didn’t happen doesn’t matter really. If 9/11 had been an inside job rather than a terrorist attack the same people would have died.

But to claim that the murder of innocent children never actually happened and to claim that the parents were in fact actors is sick beyond all belief.

MimiDaisy11 · 28/01/2021 08:30

For big events, people want big explanations. The explanation that a drunk driver, lack of seat belt use and speeding could be responsible for Princess Diana's death is just so mundane and not befitting such a big tragedy.

As for anything I believe. Well I do wonder if there's more to the Lockerbie bombing than we've been told. I read an article by quite a well known journalist who pointed out some inconsistency though I haven't looked into it more nor do I believe anything with any certainty. I just think there's more to come out. Which given that the full truth isn't out there is maybe just stating the obvious.

dottiedodah · 28/01/2021 08:33

I think Dianas death was far from an accident .Also Moon landings seem dodgy to me .It would have been an incredible feat for 50 years ago! Also had no idea Dianas death was predicted in Morrissey lyrics!
