Butter-what's your favourite and how much is it?

Currently on KerryGold which is £1.90 and rarely on offer. I used to buy Tesco own label but since lockdown I haven't been shopping there. We go through a 250g every couple of days due to my dcs addiction to freshly baked bread toasted and buttered.
What's your favourite?
(I don't want to get into any discussion about butter v spreadable products just want to hear good butter recommendations really).

Aldis West Country butter but can't get it in Scotland, so bring it back with me when I'm down south working. Asda sea salt one is another one. Pricier than others but def worth it.

RandomUsernameHere · 24/01/2021 21:37

Yeo Valley

rejectedprincess · 24/01/2021 21:59

Waitrose French Butter with sea salt crystals is incredible. Friends always ask where it is from

BettyAndVeronica · 24/01/2021 22:23

Lurpack or Aldi's version Norpack Grin

Ferrylights · 24/01/2021 22:31

I've tried Blox Butter from a tiny artisan producer in the New Forest, It's utterly divine. For everyday use Kerrygold or Aldi but I'm going to try and make my own...how hard can it be ?

Slightlyunhinged · 24/01/2021 22:32

Lidl's own here, but when we want a really special treat we get an unpasteurised butter by Beurre D'Isigny. We get it from Sainsbury's.

Haiyaa · 24/01/2021 22:32

I am a true butter aficionado, and I would tend to avoid any of the “big brands” e.g. Lurpak, Country Life and Anchor 🤢 like the plague. Lidl and Aldi sea salt butter is good, Sainsbury’s have a farmhouse butter (sometimes found on the deli) which is very nice, but up if we are having a treat it has to be Bungay Raw Milk Butter. It’s absolutely delicious and well worth the price!

@Procrastination4

Glenstal would be my favourite (but probably not available outside Ireland); after that, it’s automatically Kerrygold.
Where do you buy the Glenstal from Procrastination4? I wish my Dad was still alive so that I could buy him some, he used to go to school there. Although it's probably made near Glenstal Abbey rather than by the monks, they probably have enough to do with teaching and all.
EerieSilence · 24/01/2021 23:40

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar, Avoca for sure and I think I saw it in Supervalu too.

Pomegranatemolasses · 25/01/2021 00:00

I was slightly shocked at how cheap butter seemed to be in the UK, until I realised you're talking about 250g blocks! My favourite is Kerrygold, which is €3.50 for 500g here in Ireland.

Pomegranatemolasses · 25/01/2021 00:01

Also I like to sprinkle some Maldon salt over it, to get that crunch.

Tootyfilou · 25/01/2021 00:02

Castle Dairies Welsh salted butter. Delicious.

MiddlesexGirl · 25/01/2021 00:04

Waitrose big block if I can get it. Saves putting 8 standard blocks in the trolley (or online basket).
None of the branded butters are worth the difference in price.

I noticed when I was south of the border last summer that butter seems to be just about the one food item that is cheaper there than in N Ireland. 500g of Golden Cow is generally around £4 in my local shops and I've even seen it at £4.50 when the prices temporarily went up a couple of years back. I never see Kerrygold in 500g packs but a 250g pack is generally over £2.
knitnerd90 · 25/01/2021 04:17

Isigny beurre de barratte, salted, for spreading. But too expensive to use all the time.

vintageyoda · 25/01/2021 09:51

Kerrygold for everyday use, one of the pricier, salt-flaked, organic Cornish beauties for special occasions.

wewillmeetagain · 25/01/2021 11:28

President or lurpack

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 25/01/2021 11:39

Thanks EerieSilence, I'm not far from a couple of Avoca stores so I'll check it out when I'm allowed back out to the shops.

I haven't read all the pages so apologies if someone's already mentioned it but I've got a neat little gadget from Lakeland that churns cream into butter in a matter of minutes. You can add whichever flavours/seasalt you like too. You just shake room temperature double cream. You think it's never going to work, then you hear the think and you've got butter, with left over buttermilk. Perfect for scones on which to eat all that butter!

Oh I'll have to look for that. I made my own butter in the first lockdown by using the jar shaking method. It was fun and the kids enjoyed it but I couldn't imagine doing that every time and it was definitely a nice butter we got from it, even with just supermarket cream.
Lookingforwardto2021 · 25/01/2021 13:55

I make butter using a food processor, whipping double cream till it turns into butter

Shmithecat2 · 25/01/2021 14:03

These are great too

Butter-what's your favourite and how much is it?
Besiegedbykillersquirrels · 25/01/2021 14:37

@RatherLostPenguins it's only about £10, well it was when I got it. It's so simple and creates delicious butter. I made wild garlic, sea salt and cinnamon butters with it.

sansucre · 25/01/2021 15:40

Unsalted butter, the paler the better, the kind they serve in The Wolseley (and the rest of Corbin & King's empire) is the best butter outside of France. I wish they would sell it. However, the do not, so I have to make do with Lesucre when I'm feeling flush, President unsalted the rest of the time (although Waitrose essential unsalted butter is perfectly fine too).
