Interesting map of the new West Wing

And picking up on the question I was asked about
Bernie Sanders and the Budget Committee
It has _nothing to do with feminism.

My glee at that choice is that he will ask questions about

  • affordability
  • the gini coefficient
  • offshore funding
  • tax balance between states and federal
all the stuff that NEEDS to be asked and nobody can buy him off Grin

I've since seen Claudia has rescinded it... saying her Mum (Kellyanne) would never do that and they love each other etc.

On AOC, she is young and quite brilliant and very principled but so hated by the right, partly because she wants background checks for all weapons, and healthcare for all. She is remakably eloquent, I watched her in a hearing and was so impressed. She came from nothing to where she is now stratospherically and with no corporate donations, very impressive.

From the little I know of US politics, I really admire AOC and also Katie Porter.

To me, they are impressive, intelligent and are not afraid to take on the corrupt, sexist and unfair systems.

In particular, AOC speech about the sexism she received from Ted Yoho is inspirational.

And I love Katie Porter 's white board.

ListeningQuietly · 26/01/2021 20:40

I would support AOC
if she did not support this

for which I have no time at all

Spineless Angry

Zach Purser Brown @zachjourno

McConnell votes against continuing with Trump's impeachment trial.

Just 5 Republicans vote to continue with the proceedings.

A pretty clear indicator of the number of GOP Senators who will vote to convict.

ArrrMeHearties · 26/01/2021 21:16

It feels very humbling to be part of the us election threads with Biden instead of trump as the name

SanFranBear · 26/01/2021 21:52

Exactly, listening.

AOC is incredibly eloquent and I agree with so much if what she says. She has a huge amount of support amongst young Democrats who I believe will grow with her and push for her to try for higher office. Whether she can or not, I dont know but she is definitely one to watch. I mean, hell - she's only 31!

What a bunch of tits. This is their opportunity to remove Trump from the equation and they're choosing not to use it. Long may it backfire on them.

I googled the Claudia Conway story earlier, and I noticed that reputable papers like NYT, Wash Post etc were not covering it. It was mostly Daily Mail, NY Times, Variety, Buzzfeed etc.

Senator Leahy, (presiding judge at impeachment) has been taken ill, and hospitalised.

DuncinToffee · 26/01/2021 23:27

Something more positive

The Justice Department has formally rescinded the Trump administration's controversial "zero tolerance" policy that called for the criminal prosecution of adults crossing the border and led to the separation of thousands of families

Great news... Janet Yellen sworn in as Secretary of Treasury by VP Harris.

I cannot begin to tell you how glad I am to see the back of Mnuchin and his tone deaf wife. Trump extended Secret Service protection until July for them, as he was a trumpy loyalist right to the end.

Now we have the first woman ever to hold this position

It is good news Roussette Although I believe the usual group GOP objectors had to wave their willies first. (Actually now I've typed that I wish i hadn't - have some mind-bleach on me)

I think Democrats have always known that it would be difficult to get the 17 Republican votes. Individual republicans are gambling that the threat of being primaried is greater than the threat of losing to a Democrat at the next election.

We have seen U.K. MPs in the Labour and Conservative parties make the same calculation (weighing up threat of deselection) over the last few years of Corbyn and Brexit.

ListeningQuietly · 27/01/2021 10:16

An interesting alternate opinion on Trump and the Senate

Could someone explain the phrase “being primaried”, as used by several PP? As in, Individual republicans are gambling that the threat of being primaried is greater than the threat of losing to a Democrat at the next election

Lweji · 27/01/2021 11:58

Candidates for the actual election are chosen through Primaries, as is done for Presidential candidates.

So, incumbent candidates may face challenges by other candidates from the same party and risk not even being able to run for election against the candidate from the other party.

Lweji · 27/01/2021 12:04

Presumably, in this Impeachment Trial, the difference will be that witnesses and evidence will be presented, unlike last year.

This is interesting...

sethabramson.substack.com/p/january-5-meeting-at-trump-international

'The night before the insurrection, a large group of Trump family and advisers held an urgent meeting with January 6 organizers at the president's private residence in DC.

Well after dark on January 5, 2021—just 15 hours before an insurrection against the United States government incited by the President of the United States—Nebraska Republican Charles W. Herbster, at the time the National Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Advisory Committee for the Trump administration, attended a private meeting of Trump family members, Trump administration officials, Trump campaign advisers, January 6 organizers, and at least one member of the United States Senate at Trump International Hotel in Washington'

It means that a candidate from their own party will stand against them for the seat
