The UK (Tories) experimented briefly with the idea of a primary system in England. It was stopped damn quickly as it became clear that the public and the party had very different ideas about "the issues".

Personally if you wanted a quick fix for the UKs broken democracy, while designing a much better system, primaries aren't a bad thing. Which is why you won't hear anyone calling for them.

Except me.

The Office of the Former President will probably try to hide this from the Former President.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 27/01/2021 16:52

@Roussette - not just interesting, disgusting and proof were any more needed that #45 should be impeached and imprisoned for treason (and much else but you can't have it all).

cyclingmad · 27/01/2021 18:45

Oh the hypocrisy of the American government. Would they be monitoring the stock market when their wall street friends short stocks and bankrupt companies whilst making billions of pounds and people losing their jobs. Heck No! But when the average joe see what they tried to do to Gamestop people stepped up and stopping these hedge funds manipulating shareprices and suddenly the government is monitoring it.

Unbelievable!

Opinion: McConnell is not going to save the GOP from itself
www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/01/27/mcconnell-is-not-going-save-gop-itself/

The last paragraph of this story...

"McConnell has marched his troops right back into the MAGA corner. Do they have any means of escape? Perhaps only one: Conviction is based on two-thirds of the senators present. In protest for the “unconstitutional” trial, a pack of MAGA Republicans could decline to show up, leaving their colleagues to do the heavy lifting in disqualifying Trump from future office. That would be cowardly, weaselly and irresponsible, you say? That is precisely why you should not rule it out."

Yes, apparently it's all frozen now due to "volatility and risk."

Fine when the hedge fund bros do it; when the proles unite, it's suddenly an issue.

Good grief... Melania is setting up a 'Be Best' office at MarALago. Why why why.
She was useless with it in the WH so what is the point.
She's hiring three ex WH staff

Interesting read.

www.wired.com/story/gamestop-stock-wall-street-bets-short-squeeze/

Note: "monitoring" is basically meaningless, as in they're looking but doing nothing.

And a quick deflection to "it's a good reminder that the stock market isn't the only measure of the health of our economy and it does not reflect how the working and middle class families are doing".

Talking of ex WH staff, there is a whole confusion with McNinny.

McNinny financial disclosure stated she has an employment contract with Fox News as of 1st Jan 2020.
Fox News says there is no contract. The contract was "under discussion" but has been paused now.

Very confusing. Who is yelling the truth?

They must have something on her. Wink

More people now working on Be Best than during the Trump Presidency, then (1 if at all, according to the article).

Not quite what was meant by 'moving on' in the thread title.

I meant 2021.

I barely know the day anymore, let alone the year Blush

TheNorthWestPawsage · 27/01/2021 22:27

Likewise minou I was surprised to realise this morning that it was only a week since the inauguration - already feels like ages ago!

TheNorthWestPawsage · 27/01/2021 23:02

Irrespective on which side of the aisle they sit - House Reps and Senators need to be willing to investigate the all aspects of the attack on the Capitol building.

If Pence or Pelosi had been marched to those gallows would Cruz and Hawley and the other lily-livered pieces of excrement still be huffing and puffing about "unity" and "nothing to be gained"? This isn't just about Trump and them.

And he still hasn't solved Covid, race relations, sexual discrimination, unemployment and climate change in his own country, let alone the world. Slacker!

The GOP may need to worry, although its still early before any elections.

Doesn’t that also mean that the party members who would support more sane elected representatives are leaving?

Lweji · 28/01/2021 07:48

Good point. Hmm

Although they also say not all went to Democrats.
It may be that many nutters are also leaving after the GOP leadership failed to support the coup.

Roussette · 28/01/2021 08:54

Good to hear the GOP are being dropped because of 6th January, they are trying to dismiss it, how dare they

I read an article similar to this one yesterday and it was shocking. The police officer who died was set upon by a pack, a number of them beating him with any object they could get their hands on. One of the attackers says he was just 'patting him on the back' and didn't mean to hold a baton on his throat. And next day buys a plane ticket to Zurich. There is footage of him showing his attacks, yet his defence is he was just 'trying to protect the police'.
The number of rioters who went there to protect others... funny that...

uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/geophysicist-accused-beating-cop-capitol-171611713.html

And another police officer heavily involved in 6th January has committed suicide.

How dare the GOP dismiss all this for the sake of unity. No no no.
