@pointythings
Personally I think the US view that you have to be demonstrably a Christian to get anywhere in politics is nuts. Especially for a country that allegedly has separation of church and state. But then again much of the world is like that and I will probably not see the day when religion becomes something that lives in the private domain of each individual and is deservedly irrelevant outside it.

Yes. I wish we would though. (Live to see it).

Thank you for keeping up with these threads. I'm very glad they're returning to a grown-up discussion!

oh and happy (Late) Burns night to all; I would have posted but I was too busy enjoying the Big Burns Supper with a wee dram! Grin

I thought this was perhaps a parody or a joke, but apparently not... Jon Sopel of BBC News has reported this.

A notice from Trumpy.

Can he honestly make himself look more stupid? 😂🤣

Ahhh apologies, I see NorthW's guardian link covers some of this. But not the official notice picture.
Reading that article, I'm already confused.

We have a variety of bodies ...

Maga Patriot Party
DJTFP (Donald J Trump Former President)
PAC (Patriot Action Committee)

and no one knows whether they like each other or not. Yet.
😂

@BelfastBloke

McConnell has capitulated on the filibuster.
Interesting. Although it may benefit GOP in future times too.

Just to touch on that NY Times interview with Dr Fauci, I was struck by the fact he seemed to paint Trump as dangerous but more because people just don't stand up to him. He is swayed by personal opinions and surrounded by Yes Men which means his 'wants' are always acceded to but it also sounded like he did genuinely admire Dr Fauci for saying No. I mean, obviously this comes from one source with a personal and professional interest in not doing a hatchet job but it just seemed interesting to me that he kind of kept Dr Fauci along to basically 'see the opposite view', even if he never had any intention of following it.

I dont think I'm making myself very clear but fascinating insight into their relationship.

I was saying last year that I could see Trump inventing a position "former president" and trying that on in court.

Well worth watching "The Rise of the Nazis" if you haven't already.

Hitlers MO was very much to give unwritten overlapping orders to toadies and let them eliminate each other trying to please him.

Can all the other former Presidents turn up to wherever he’s claiming is his office now or start using this on everything they write? Or is it only for the most recent former President in which case he’ll hand it over to Joe Biden in a dignified manner once he’s done?

I really don’t think he’s thought this through... 🤔

Roussette · 26/01/2021 10:56

Chaz that clip made me laugh out loud, I had soooo forgotten their silliness!

SanFran interesting, yes. I do think Dr. Fauci did dispute falsities whenever he possibly could but he was treading a fine line of being respectful to the President whilst inwardly cringing and rolling his eyes. And he managed it.

How many former presidents are going to be in court a lot ?

I do hope that as a whole, the US decides to use Trumps "precedent busting" example, and bust the precedent of calling former presidents "Mr. President" or "President ".

So it's President Carter, President Clinton, President Bush President Obama, Mr. Trump ....

With a bit of luck, he'll refuse to talk to anyone who calls him Mr. Trump, which will considerably reduce his media exposure.

NotaRealLawyer · 26/01/2021 11:33

thehill.com/homenews/campaign/535754-trump-builds-pressure-on-gop-ahead-of-impeachment

Allies of former President Trump are waging an intense pressure campaign aimed at convincing GOP senators to vote against his conviction in next month’s impeachment trial.

The message to wavering GOP senators is that anyone who votes to convict Trump is guaranteeing a tough primary challenge that could end their political career.

The message is directed not only to red-state GOP senators who might be thinking of moving the party away from Trump, but to GOP leaders who might want to break with the president after a pro-Trump mob ransacked the Capitol on Jan. 6.

“There are several incumbent Republicans up in 2022 that would be vulnerable in a primary, from Roy Blunt to Todd Young and John Thune and many others,” said one prominent operative in Trump’s orbit. “The last thing these guys need is a pissed off Trump gunning for them.

Didn't someone note that in same cases where Trump "helped" people their vote fell ?

Lweji · 26/01/2021 11:51

Birx in an interview has said that Trump would show up with graphs and data that she hadn't shown him, and she suggests someone else was giving those to him.
Sounds to me more than yes people, but people pushing their own agendas. Hmm

Roussette · 26/01/2021 12:37

I know I'm a bit thick at times but I just don't understand about Trumpy gunning for the Senators to not vote for impeachment.

if they do and if he then cannot hold office in 2024 surely they will be rid of him and not vulnerable? Am I looking at it too simplistically?

So indeed, a lot more than mere Yes people.

You're looking at it without the deep and confusing cross-current of interlinked campaign finances; many of them would BE quite vulnerable without the money his presence brings in, both directly and indirectly.

Without that money to add to their campaign finances, re-election becomes....problematic.

I have ZERO sympathy for her. Even in those first days, where she's shown becoming visibly uncomfortable while he talks about injecting bleach and sunlight, she had to have known.

She had to have known she wasn't going to be the exception -- that he wasn't going to all of a sudden start listening to reason because she was the one presenting it. She put herself in that position and frankly deserves the skewering she got over it.

minou123 · 26/01/2021 13:00

Thats really interesting gwenneh, because I thought the same as Roussette.

I thought they would be climbing all over each other to get rid of him, so they can achieve thier political dreams. But its interesting that his finance impacts this.
