Another example is the British Empire. Australia did not have to fight a war to gain independence, and independence has been a gradual process lasting decades.

Dr, Fauci talks openly about what it was like to be working with Trump.

Sounds horrendous!

Unions that govern by consent can allow members to leave. Political situations can change. It’s not as though all the states joined the US through war or invasion.

It would have to be a hell of a constitutional change to allow a change to a perpetual union ...

President Biden signs Executive Order strengthening Buy American Provisions. Ensuring Future of America is Made in America by All of America’s Workers

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/01/2021 21:14

Fauci is a genuine scientist, I feel. He isn't interested in politics or opinion or any of the rest of that stuff: he just wants to get on with finding and sorting out the facts and the data and drawing conclusions and seeing where those go to.

He's had a little under a year of trying to stick to that in the face of morons and idiots who want him to pretend to agree with whatever their latest untested hobby-horse is, and no longer needing to do that is probably going to add five years to his working life.

I like him very much indeed.

Leahy, not Roberts, to preside over impeachment trial.
thehill.com/homenews/senate/535700-leahy-roberts-to-preside-over-impeachment-trial

Republican critics say this creates a conflict of interest because Leahy voted in February to convict Trump on two articles of impeachment.

Some have also argued the Senate should not be impeaching a former president, and that only Roberts should be presiding.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/01/2021 21:18

Why does Roberts want to duck out, I wonder?

merrymouse · 25/01/2021 22:05

It would have to be a hell of a constitutional change to allow a change to a perpetual union ...

I’m not imagining a quick change - I’m thinking more in terms of decades.

maggiethecat · 25/01/2021 22:35

Just saw a clip of a WH briefing with President Biden taking questions. It was near the end and journalists were jockeying to ask the last question he said he'd take when he turned and pointed to one guy at the back and said "I know he always asks tough questions and they always have an edge to them but I like him anyway, go ahead and ask your question". 😆

All said with a smile. No rudeness or rancor. To think that we used to take such civility for granted!

maggiethecat · 25/01/2021 22:36

And I don't think it was a plant because the guy was challenging Biden on something he said earlier.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 25/01/2021 22:37

The journalist was from Fox News I think.

Finally...

Biden replaces controversial White House physician with personal doctor.
thehill.com/homenews/administration/535665-biden-replaces-controversial-white-house-physician-with-personal

O'Connor retired from the military at the conclusion of the Obama administration, but he remained as Biden's doctor while simultaneously serving as the founding director of executive medicine at George Washington University.

He replaces Sean Conley, who spent roughly two years as former President Trump's White House doctor. Conley faced intense criticism for his handling of Trump's bout with the coronavirus, as he initially misled the public about whether the president had been given supplemental oxygen.

merrymouse · 25/01/2021 23:00

Biden just said the US hoped to be on its way to herd immunity by summer.

I didn’t hear everything he said, but I thought herd immunity depended on no asymptomatic spread after vaccination, and the data to confirm that would be the case doesn’t exist yet...?

AcrossthePond55 · 25/01/2021 23:36

It's an 'interesting' time for the GOP. In truth, the 'senior' members abhor Doofus BUT they also know he has a huge 'fan base'. And he's threatening to start his MAGA party and fracture the GOP.

Principles vs power. What to do? What to do?

maggiethecat · 26/01/2021 00:04

I don't see how they can not move away from him. Jan 6 is going to look even worse over time and surely moderate republican voters will be revulsed enough not to support the party if he's still calling the shots. If he forms his own MAGA and fractures the GOP not all republicans will join so he'll have no real chance at the presidency even if he manages to be eligible.

Either way, they're screwed for some time to come unless the Dems screw up massively.....

AcrossthePond55 · 26/01/2021 00:08

Article of Impeachment being presented to the Senate. On CNN now.

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 26/01/2021 00:10

It's definitely an interesting time for the GOP right now!

The Democrats currently have the White House, the House and the Senate, and the GOP need to look at why this has happened.

If the only way they can have a future is by supporting people like Trump, trying to overturn fair democratic elections and generally behaving in a manner that damages their country then they have massive problems.

I don't know why they aren't looking to the future generation, and finding themselves decent, good, younger candidates as opposed to morons like Trump (and potentially Mike Pompeo or Ted Cruz for 2024, which is a scary thought).

Vaccines can prevent transmission by preventing disease. Asymptomatic transmission can be a problem, but it is lower in real asymptomatic cases rather than pre-symptomatic. Particularly in vaccinated people, the viral load will be much lower and it is expected that the viruses produced will be mostly neutralised by antibodies, as in the later stages of the disease.

It is a very reasonable assumption to hope for herd immunity from the vaccine.

Domestic terrorist finds himself in no-fly list. Cries. "They" want to ruin his life.

PerkingFaintly · 26/01/2021 02:22

Only if they know about it.

But as shown above, many don't.

The groups and media companies which have spent the last few years drawing people in with teasers about "Revealing the truth the 'Mainstream Media' don't want you to know, and the secrets they try to keep hidden from you," are, in fact, refusing to reveal the truth to their followers, and are working very hard to keep secrets from them.

I would say it's ironic, but it's not really. It's merely yet another entirely predictable instance of their accusations being, in fact, admissions.
