Tom Hanks as Guilliani?

lionheart · 09/02/2021 12:36

'President' when it suits but not if he can dodge impeachment.

I think Joe Pesci as Guilliani if someone could get him out of retirement again.

Does the US have a law similar to the UK around use of certain titles when raising money ?

Is "President of the United States" not protected in some way ?

(Some smaller countries might view someone unlawfully calling themselves "President" as treasonous and time for an appointment with a wall, a stake, and a TV crew ....)

It's funny ...recent events have caused me to re-evaluate my views on the US constitution, having spent decades praising it and wishing the UK had similar. Turns out it's a bit pants isn't it ?

An interesting analysis of the election

www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/02/09/capitol-riot-oath-keeper-fbi/

"The feds say he’s an extremist leader who directed rioters. He also had top-secret clearance and worked for the FBI, attorney says."

"Navy veteran Thomas Edward Caldwell led a band of the Oath Keepers extremist group to D.C. on Jan. 6 to storm the U.S. Capitol building, federal prosecutors allege, helping to mastermind a violent plot to stop lawmakers from certifying President Biden’s victory."

"But Caldwell’s attorney, Thomas K. Plofchan, says he isn’t just a retired lieutenant commander. Caldwell also had top-secret security clearance and served as a section chief for the FBI after leaving the armed forces in 2009, according to Plofchan."

I'm sure there will be many others in active duty and possibly some in the Capitol Police as well. I haven't found any recent news of internal investigations apart from some suspended officers in the days after the Capitol invasion.

The last paragraph from this BBC article
It remains unclear how many off-duty police officers may have been involved, but reports suggest that at least 31 police officers from agencies across the US are under investigation for their alleged participation in the protest and the eventual mob violence at the Capitol

Also, interesting analysis of how Wikipedia went about controllling information in real time during the insurrection. Possible lessons for other sites. Including the list of trusted and untrusted sources (e.g. Breitbart and the Daily Mail).

I'm gonna predict that they will suggest that they were working "deep undercover" there. So deep no records were ever made or kept.

The former internet influencer may not feel so "happy" fairly soon.

Had to laugh at Club president

They also insist that Trump is an official employee at the club, given his role as club President.

Lweji · 09/02/2021 14:39

I wonder how many employees have been provided living quarters.

I'm no lawyer, but did I spot the phrase Bona fide employees in the agreement ?

Which suggests the residents lawyers were already wise to the idea that Trump might try an end run around the contract.

Lweji · 09/02/2021 15:23

Very good point.

Some of them may be lawyers. Most will be able to pay good ones too, I'm guessing.

Really interesting article. Thank you.

DGRossetti · 09/02/2021 15:41

Interesting that Wiki seems to be able to do what Facebook, Twitter et al claim they can't ...

But then Wiki isn't an adflinger ....

(Nothing - nothing - arouses DGRs paranoia antennae than governments claiming they have to take certain steps to address a problem when there are firms out there who have quite easily managed to avouf "the problem" without the need for laws ...)

NotaRealLawyer · 09/02/2021 16:10

Thank you for the wiki article Lewji. So interesting.

I'm wondering if it's coincidence or not, but there have been many films on recently about American politics. I'm wondering whether it's reflecting the current events taking place in America.

I happened to catch a brilliant one last night, by accident really. It was called 'All the way', starring Bryan Cranston as LBJ. It covers the events surrounding the deaths of Kennedy and King Jr, and the passing of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

I know it's not Trump related, but I thought I would recommend it on here, as it showed examples of filibusters, passing bills through Congress, lobbying etc. It really was fantastic.

Didn't LBJ say something about "That's the South lost for a generation" as he signed it ?

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 09/02/2021 18:09

DGRossetti

Yes, I believe he did.

I didn't actually know alot about LBJ except that became president after Kennedy got shot. But he seems to have been a decent man and a very good president, though his stance on the Vietnam war made him unpopular.

All the way, with LBJ !

He should have prosecuted Nixon for treason in 1968. He held back as he didn't want to admit that Nixon had been bugged.

He was an early exponent of the "hairdryer" treatment, I believe.

They called it getting the 'Johnson Treatment'. Apparently he was a very difficult man to say no to. A combination of physical presence, bribery, reminder of favours owed, and sheer relentless badgering.

Good grief, anyone watching the impeachment? That video of the storming of the Capitol is something else. Starts at about 29.00 on here, if you can get this C-Span live clip to work: www.c-span.org/video/?508293-1/impeachment-trial&vod&start=2316
