AP
BREAKING; Former President Trump's lawyers call his impeachment trial unconstitutional "political theater" and urge the Senate to dismiss the case

apnews.com/article/donald-trump-impeachment

They suggest that Trump was simply exercising his First Amendment rights when he disputed the election results and argue that he explicitly encouraged his supporters to have a peaceful protest and therefore cannot be responsible for the actions of the rioters. They say the Senate is not entitled to try Trump now that he has left office, an argument contested by even some conservative legal scholars, and they deny that the goal of the case is justice.

merrymouse · 08/02/2021 19:09

Personally I would have just continued without comment, only giving Trump shit intel that I definitely wanted the baddies to have. After all, the only way Trump could know it's duff is from another illegal source inside.

The Coleen Rooney approach! Like it!

If anyone is interested and has time to spare, you can now read Trump’s Impeachment Defense Memo, 78 pages.

The Trumpies really do have DARVO down to fine art, don't they?

How lovely that they've suddenly decided the constitution, not individuals, reigns supreme.

What was that about carving out a mechanism to suppress opponents?

If the whole thing weren't so serious, their admissions-dressed-as-accusations would be very funny indeed.

PerkingFaintly · 08/02/2021 20:35

I've been pondering the fact that Trumpies seem to have decided that "I'M BEING SILENCED" are the magic words that let them do anything.

It seems to be their universal slogan (see threads passim for fabulous pastiche on "As I said on Fox News – twice – conservative voices are being silenced.")

I'm not sure how one is supposed to react to this.

No one has a right for other people to give them a soapbox.

MTG was whining that other people would be on committees instead of her... but clearly if she took the place on the committee, the other people would be the one being silenced!

And shouting fire in a crowded theatre is the canonical example of something not permitted under freedom of speech, even US-style.

What's more, I'm perfectly sure that every last one of the "I'm being silenced!" Trumpie mob is more than happy that, say, extremist Islamist jihadi voices are being silenced.

So even Trumpies don't make an idealogical case that everyone must be given a soapbox for whatever they want to say.

But meanwhile they're doing well out of shrieking very loudly that they're silent... Hmm

Early Trump supporters.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 08/02/2021 21:23

Someone who does need silencing.

From the Washington Post:
Sen. Hawley is fundraising off Trump’s Senate impeachment trial.

Sen. Josh Hawley, the Missouri Republican who raised a fist outside the Capitol in a photo that was taken before a pro-Trump mob stormed the building Jan. 6, sent an email to supporters Monday in which he sought to fundraise off Trump’s coming Senate impeachment trial.

“Even chasing President Trump out of office isn’t enough for them,” Hawley said of Democrats in the email. “They have to impeach him AGAIN. They are going after Trump, and they are still coming after me — both of us for the same sin: Instead of protecting the elites, I stood up for the people and now I am being threatened every day by Democrats calling for me to be expelled from the Senate, and Joe Biden has echoed that I should be ‘flat beaten.’ ”

Hawley has mentioned Biden’s “flat beaten” remark, out of context, in a number of fundraising emails. In remarks to reporters in Delaware two days after the attack on the Capitol, Biden rebuffed calls from some Democrats to remove Hawley and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) from office over their efforts to overturn the election, saying that, instead, “I think they should be just flat beaten the next time they run.”

In the fundraising email, Hawley also defended his objections to Biden’s victory in several states.
“I stood up and objected, and now I am paying the price,” the senator said. “Antifa has targeted my home, my name has been dragged through the mud, and the D.C. Bar Association is entertaining calls for me to be disbarred from the practice of law. My crime: refusing to do as I am told and allow the 2020 election to be certified with no question. They are FURIOUS with me for standing up, but I won’t back down and I hope you won’t either.”

Thanks DuncinToffee.
I'm reading through.
Apparently, that awful Nancy Pelosi woman, used the word " fighting" many times.
Not like our Donald, who said "peacefully" lots and lots.
It's all her fault.
Also there's a bit where they insist Nancy Pelosi didn't adhere to procedures. Sort of like that Parish Council rant at Jackie Weaver, only on a larger scale. Grin

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/feb/08/us-ice-immigration-customs-enforcement-haiti-deportations

'US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) deported at least 72 people to Haiti on Monday, including a two-month-old baby and 21 other children, in an apparent flagrant breach of the Biden administration’s orders only to remove suspected terrorists and potentially dangerous convicted felons.

The children were deported to Haiti on Monday on two flights chartered by Ice from Laredo, Texas to the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The removals sent vulnerable infants back to Haiti as it is being roiled by major political unrest.'

Silence is golden. Just saying. Wink

Like in the Miranda rights. And you do have freedom of speech, but if you talk, then what you say can and will be used against you by a court of law.

Apparently, many people should be read their Miranda rights on a frequent basis. Wink

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 09/02/2021 09:20

I can't remember who said this, and haven't been able to find the source again, but I read an article which was a response to Josh Hawley's claim that he was being 'muzzled'.

The journalist said (I may be misquoting) "Surely if he's being muzzled, we should be hearing less from him?"

Last Friday, the administration appeared to gain the upper hand in its attempt to rein in Ice when deportation flights to Haiti were suspended. But on Monday the immigration agency reasserted itself again with the renewed flights to Port-au-Prince, children and infants on board

cf. the UK Home Office ...

Did anyone read the story about the Appeal Court throwing out charges against activists who tried to prevent the UK Home Office deporting people ?

www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-essex-55859455

Protesters who broke into Stansted Airport to stop a plane deporting people to Africa have won an appeal against their convictions.

The group, known as the Stansted 15, cut through the perimeter fence and locked themselves together around a Boeing 767 jet in 2017.

They were convicted of the intentional disruption of services at an aerodrome.

The Lord Chief Justice said they "should not have been prosecuted for the extremely serious offence".

(contd).

For those of you wondering about the mood in Mar a Lago, Jason Miller, senior adviser, in an interview with Sarah Baxter - Sun Times, paywall - said everything is just peachy. The Twitter ban gives Trump more time to spend with his family, enjoying the sun and the odd game of golf. Melania says he's happier than she's seen him in months. Such a relief for him not to have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Any reports (CNN) of him planning a revenge tour with rallies in the states of dissidents - are fake news. (Tho' Liz Cheney is 'a dead woman walking' - just a hyperbolic figure of speech.)

Btw, the 2016 series about Trump and the Media, with a film crew embedded in the NYT Washington office, is back up on I-player for anyone who didn't watch first time round. Interesting to be reminded of the first appearances of Mike Flynn, Comey and the Don Jr Russian connection.

Lweji · 09/02/2021 11:43

I can believe that everyone is happier.
He can now live in that special place in his head where he is the best at everything and everyone looks up to him.
And Melania wasn't a happy bunny at the WH.

DGRossetti · 09/02/2021 11:46

The problem is the machine around Trump can't afford for him to fade away. They need him fired up, angry tub thumping and (above all) bring the $$$ rolling in.

He's the Michael Jackson of politics. In so many ways.

Roussette · 09/02/2021 12:06

Such a relief for him not to have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Weight of the word on his shoulders my arse. He stopped 'presidenting' once he lost the electionfor starters. And then there's his schedules he wrote himself 'The President has lots of meetings and lots of phone calls' Grin

I bet Melania is happier but whether she will stay with him is another matter...
