I do hope so, FridayNightAtTheBronze.

Not sure what's best for the Republican Party. The current leadership doesn't seem to have the strength or will to distance themselves from the crazy loonies and downright dangerous.
I think there's voter appeal to those who won't vote Democrat but didn't like the attempted coup or Trump's antics.
As the Biden administration starts implementing policies there is space for criticism and to take constructive initiative.
They have at least one year to rebuild if they shake off their association with the deplorables.

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 07/02/2021 11:36

Lweji

If they distance themselves from Trump, MTG etc, and get themselves a new strong candidate they could be OK. There's a reason why Georgia flipped so dramatically, and if the Republicans don't take a new direction, instead of this bizarre and dangerous stolen election rhetoric, then they will lose more seats. I think they have to defend approx 20 seats in the next 2 years, and the way things are going, those seats will go to the Democrats.

Lweji · 07/02/2021 11:51

It's as if this thread is turning into a Republican advisory board. Grin

They do need some strategic rethink.

But Democrats shouldn't be pushed to occupy right wing space. They're already too right wing as it is.

Meanwhile, coincidence?
Or sudden death by hitting ground kind of reason?

Grin They should pay heed, it's good advice!

The news about Navalny's doctor is suspicious. I keep expecting to hear reports of Navalny having a sudden health issue or accident in custody.

PerkingFaintly · 07/02/2021 12:31

Oh that's terrible news about the doctor who treated Navalny in Omsk dying. He was senior physician at the hospital and sounds like an excellent doctor for all his patients.

Navalny's chief of staff comments that foul play can't be ruled out, but at the same time Russia's health system is poor and it's not uncommon for doctors to die. Which is pretty grim in itself.

PerkingFaintly · 07/02/2021 12:40

But Democrats shouldn't be pushed to occupy right wing space. They're already too right wing as it is.

By "more right wing" do you mean more economically, or more racist and dictatorial though?

I'd probably agree with you on both fronts, but I think this may be one of the times it's important to distinguish. Now that the Republicans have let the genie out of the bottle, it could be an economically far-left wing authoritarian populist demagogue who rises to challenge Trump. (I mean far left even by European standards, not "Joe Biden is the far left" sort of far left.Grin)

None of us need it spelt out, but for occasional visitors to the board: spending on housing and education obviously wouldn't make anti-democratic authoritarianism OK.

Lweji · 07/02/2021 13:44

Indeed it could.

DGRossetti · 07/02/2021 14:26

But Democrats shouldn't be pushed to occupy right wing space. They're already too right wing as it is.

The US doesn't work to the accepted definitions of left and right wing. There is no left wing in the US. Not even faintly socialist.

Lweji · 07/02/2021 14:48

How this impeachment trial will be different.

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/feb/07/trump-senate-impeachment-trial

I understand that the left and the right in the US are not quite the same as in Europe, but still, they are recognised in the US.
My worry is that Democrats will feel the need for more conservative, less tax, less federal governemnt, less protections for the vulnerable to gain votes from disenfranchised GOP voters.
That would certainly open the field for left wing populists, possibly drawing in many current Trump supporters.

That Time piece was very interesting. I had not realised most of this was going on in the background.

The bit about how quickly they reacted to the anti-vote brigade in Detroit really does show how much planning and activating they'd done.

I liked that it was an illustration of how being effective and organised makes a difference.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/02/2021 18:02

The Time article made me so very grateful that there were foresighted people in the USA who manoeuvred themselves into a position to make the election stick, starting well before Trump's appalling behaviour had become totally obvious. I was enormously relieved when there was so little left-wing reaction in the streets when Trump's bully-boys turned out to try to steal the election, but I didn't know there had been so many people carefully working in the background to deprive him of the civil unrest that he wanted in order to call martial law.

AcrossthePond55 · 07/02/2021 18:16

Hey all. Thank you all so much for all the messages of sympathy. It means a lot and shows that we have forged 'bonds' here beyond the horrendous mess of the past -4- 5 years. This sounds silly, but I'm so glad that the Doofus shit show ended before my mum passed. I don't know if I could have stood the double-stress. And thankful she never knew about him or the state of the US.

Not just Mum's death itself, but making funeral plans and trying to schedule things has shown me how this pandemic has really affected the funeral industry here. One never, ever used to hear a funeral director say "I'm so sorry, but we're so backed up". I'm very lucky that 'timings' sort of worked for us and we 'only' have to wait 10 days. Others are waiting 3 + weeks to bury their loved ones. Normal in the US is 3-4 days.

On the positive, I have my appointment for my 2nd Covid jab.

On to business:
Coverage of the 2nd trial begins at 9 am EST on Tuesday on CNN and MSNBC. Not sure if the networks are going to go 'gavel to gavel' or not.

Roussette · 07/02/2021 18:24

That is good to hear Across . There must be nothing worse than having to wait a huge amount of time for a funeral for a loved one.

Thanks for the heads up on the trial, I did wonder when I could tune into CNN again for this!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/02/2021 18:31

We had to wait a fortnight for my mother's funeral, and eleven days for my father's. The wait for his wasn't so bad for those of us remaining, but I really thought that he might go mad before hers, because he had no closure while he was still working his mind round to her being dead at all, and organising things (cancelling the stairlift he had planned to have ready for when she came home from hospital, and things of that sort, as well as the funeral tea and such) was almost more than he could bear.

I'm glad it won't be so bad for you, Across.

A friend died suddenly last week - not Covid-related. They also had to wait 10 days for the funeral service, and only a few people could attend in person. I tried to log into the livestream but messed up the login and could not attend.

I dreamt last night that I bumped into his sister (who taught my children at nursery and who I love dearly) and I wanted to hug her and kept wondering why it felt wrong. It's all just so rubbish.

Sending my sympathies for your loss Across - and I'm really glad you're getting your jab.
