It does read a bit conspiracy, but none of it seems very secretive, though.

Lweji · 06/02/2021 10:17

@pointythings

That is quite an article, and also very scary to see how close it was.
I think we all knew it was going to be close. And that is was a dangerous time. I'm quite happy to be told it wasn't left to chance.
HangryPants · 06/02/2021 11:01

Didn't make it to the end of the time piece - unless it's a spoof then it's manna to the deep state/conspiracy nuts

Yeah, I didn't really get it. In what way did the Left and Big Business agree to whatever it's claimed they agreed to??

NotaRealLawyer · 06/02/2021 11:37

edition.cnn.com/2021/02/05/politics/biden-trump-intelligence-briefing/index.html

President Joe Biden doesn't believe former President Donald Trump should receive classified intelligence briefings, as is tradition for past presidents, citing Trump's "erratic behavior unrelated to the insurrection."

Needsmustnow · 06/02/2021 12:47

I find it really helpful when people give a bit of information or description with a link.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/02/2021 13:24

I do like the fact that the only way Trump can legally live at Mar-A-Lago is if he is an employee of the club.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/02/2021 13:26

I find "reelection donations trump organisation" pretty-much revealing about the content of that link: it will be about re-election donations and the Trump organisation, won't it? And since it is Huffpost it is likely not to be all that long.

lionheart · 06/02/2021 14:57

I usually do it when there is something in partilular to flag or if it is not obvious where the link will take you, or what it is about (in broad terms). Smile

edition.cnn.com/2021/02/06/politics/what-matters-february-5/index.html

'(CNN)It's the frustration of presidents from the beginning of the republic: how to get anything done when Congress gets stuck.

Increasingly, it means trying to work unilaterally. Actually, increasingly is an understatement. President Joe Biden is blowing all predecessors out of the water when it comes to executive actions, orders, proclamations and memorandums.'

Roussette · 06/02/2021 17:25

Warning!
This next link is total satire but it didn't half make me laugh 😂🤣😅

He's got a way to go to get to FDRs 3,000+ ...

Roussette · 06/02/2021 17:40

How refreshing is this... just love it.

And there was Ivanka holding up a tin of beans saying what a great brand they were because the CEO of that Co praised her Dad Hmm

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/biden-administration-family-trump-b1798343.html

Joe Biden has reaffirmed his commitment that none of his family members will receive a role in his administration, while making an apparent dig at former First Daughter Ivanka Trump.

His statement followed Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, telling reporters last week that the administration would not allow businesses to imply they had the president's endorsement when advertising – highlighting another difference between the Biden and Trump administrations.

Liz Cheney is being treated appallingly ! do you think the Republican party will survive this ?

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 07/02/2021 08:15

So the Republicans are censuring Liz Cheney, but don't want to do anything about MTG promoting conspiracy theories or a President who incites violence? Just when you think the Republicans can't get worse, they go and surprise you.

justawoman · 07/02/2021 08:16

I found this article interesting, on what might have been driving Pence:

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/feb/07/mike-pence-donald-trump-republicans-religion-evangelical

I almost felt sorry for him, then I remembered he propped up the most appalling president in history, that he’s a right wing but who tried to bring in anti gay legislation, and that he’s a multimillionaire who’s no doubt using his timeline his isolated cabin in Indiana to count his dosh.

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 07/02/2021 08:17

I actually hope the Republican party don't survive this. The way they are behaving and the awful things they are condoning, they shouldn't be in charge of a country.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 07/02/2021 08:25

So censuring... Does it matter? I see Wyoming GOP are saying they want her to pay back some money but does she have to? Presumably they will try to run someone else instead of her next time her seat is up, but will that happen? Or is it like UK politics where the state party is full of loons and totally out of touch with what the voters in her area actually want?

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 07/02/2021 08:54

HoneysuckIejasmine

If I understand it correctly (and happy to be corrected if not), censuring is important because they can remove future funding and they also remove their endorsement, so when Liz needs to retain her seat in the Senate, the Republicans won't help her, and will probably try to replace her with someone else. It's also a strong message to the Republicans voters that her own party thinks she's behaved wrongly (even if she hasn't).

PerkingFaintly · 07/02/2021 09:06

I'm not cheered by the idea of the Republican party completely collapsing.

Improving, certainly. But any government needs a decent opposition (one that's working for the benefit of the country, not just the party). And political vacuums are dangerous in general and right now particularly so, because we can see the powers that are arising and will rush to fill that vacuum.

The US has been incredibly lucky so far that the Dems chose to behave like grown-ups and act in the national interest by putting up a team which is prioritising restoring democratic norms.

It would have been entirely possible for them to follow the Repugs into the populist demagogue space and run a lefty authoritarian cult leader against the right's authoritarian cult leader.

That could yet happen in 4 years' time.

I wasn't able to read the New Yorker article above, but people referring to "zombie Trumpism" haven't understood what's going on. Trump was just the explosive to blow a hole in the side of the building. He didn't create the far right billionaires, he didn't get himself to the presidency; he's just the carnival barker and showman. Now that he's blown things up he's expendable (although excellent value as a dead cat). The people with plans can slide into the chaos he has created.

lionheart · 07/02/2021 09:56

I suppose that if it does collapse or split, some of those involved in the Lincoln Project will be drivers for whatever comes next (GOP or not).

The remnant that continues despite how awful things have become, or the faction that takes the QAnoners and KKK and America First crowd along, with it will be truly deplorable.

Much worse than what we have seen so far.

PerkingFaintly · 07/02/2021 10:18

Problem for any newly launched conservative party is "We're not exciting and aren't promising magical solutions for all your problems" isn't much of a sell vs someone promising all of the above, plus free strokes for your feelz thrown in.

In fact pretty much the only way to sell such a party would be to have an enemy to claim to be fighting against. The easiest enemy to pick would be the Dems, requiring more vilification and division, and pumping further the type of politics that got the US here in the first place.

Being a populist demagogue with zero scruples is a winner... temporarily. But during that "temporary", a lot of people die and the country is seriously damaged, maybe permanently if outside countries are waiting to swoop.

FridayNightAtTheBronze · 07/02/2021 10:29

PerkingFaintly

I wouldn't say I'm cheered either by the thought of the Republican party's demise, however the way they are operating at the moment is damaging and unsustainable.

There is definitely a need for either a complete overhaul of the Republican party or perhaps a new party entirely.

Ross Perrot showed in 1992 and then in 1996 with the Reform Party, that a relatively new party can obtain a decent following quite quickly. It would just need to be the right person with the right message.
