Russia cultivated Trump as asset for 40 years

It wouldn’t surprise me because nothing surprises me any more. If I could read it in a throwaway airport thriller, it could happen in real life.
If I’d written the airport thriller, though, Melania would be the asset’s handler/minder, hiding not just in plain sight but in the spotlight. Actually I can see the movie version.
“We have a very important job for you. It will not be dangerous, but it will be tedious and unpleasant. You will need to get your hair and nails done, and a new wardrobe.”

When you start looking into long term spies, double agents, and how Russia recruits agents or uses compromat (and not only Russia), not a lot will surprise you anymore.

It would have been a lot cheaper to spend a few million feeling up people like Trump (so dim they'd never realise) than having to invest in the business of building bigger nukes.

With the added advantage that at some point, if you've done it right, it becomes more essential for the US to keep it a secret than the Kremlin. Imagine watching your enemies having to contort themselves silly to avoid letting the world know they'd been fooled.

Fooled bigly, in fact.

@Lweji

The Gamestop situation is not political in any respect.

Why do you mention it here, then?
If not political, what does it have to do with Biden?

Because the media are amking it political because the white House is monitoring the situation instead of actually doing something to stop the blatant manipulation. For Robinson to sell people's investments without permission is a crime. No point making big announcement about monitoring and then doing naff all.

No point the AOC making an announcement about how its bad what Robinhood has done and being someone who sits on the finance committee does nothing.

You have the media making out these people are like Trump and they aren't.

Somethings just make me giggle, some cause serious, even painful, belly-laughter. I was only giggling until I looked at this properly.

I can't help wondering, though: was the r the typo for l, or was the n a typo for t?

Trump and his relationship with Russia which goes back decades.

'Donald Trump was cultivated as a Russian asset over 40 years and proved so willing to parrot anti-western propaganda that there were celebrations in Moscow, a former KGB spy has told the Guardian.

For the KGB, it was a charm offensive. They had collected a lot of information on his personality so they knew who he was personally. The feeling was that he was extremely vulnerable intellectually, and psychologically, and he was prone to flattery.

“Trump was the perfect target in a lot of ways: his vanity, narcissism made him a natural target to recruit. He was cultivated over a 40-year period, right up through his election.”

sorry to interrupt but looks like a slow news day here. Quick procedural question if I may.

Is it possible to impeach squirrels?

Asking for a friend on the coronavirus board. 🙄

So I guess that made Doofus a 'Moscow-ian Candidate' programmed with flattery and money instead of 'brainwashing'.

Loving this conspiracy theory! I did have a wonder to myself a while back; missed the Melania angle though!

Mymymble · 29/01/2021 21:08

Thanks for the new thread and all the old ones. I started lurking on polling day last November and this series has been the best news source ever.
We'd planned to emigrate after Brexit and then had second thoughts after Trump won. Then had third thoughts and decided and visited Pasadena (we're from Conn.). Then fourth thoughts with covid. Now fifth thoughts. Thank you guys from a lurker and their US son. Xxx

  • lets just say the CV threads are also "extremely vulnerable intellectually" today - its all whoop! whoop! we've got our vaccines, the EU are have sour grapes and want a war! 🙄 Br-ovid at its best.

I am slinking off to bury myself in The West Wing.

I cannot help but think of Al Capone.
It doesnt matter what they find, but they WILL find something indictable.

I still cannot believe that elements of the Elected Republican Officials continue to get away with spreading the right wing propaganda. It really saddens me that we live in such a selfish world. ( made more apparent with the vaccine fiasco of 'I am alright Jack' attitude here in the uk).

Trump really is going to get away with it- he will be laughing in his office, whilst collecting money from his followers.

merrymouse · 30/01/2021 09:57

Trump might get away with it but the Republican Party won’t.

Right wing parties love to imply that socialism = Venezuela, but Trumpism has far more in common with the strategy of South American dictatorships (promise unicorns, crush your opponents) than Conservative politics (which I understand as low taxes, minimal intervention, ‘traditional’ values).

DGRossetti · 30/01/2021 11:33

I now wonder if Farage was a soviet mole all along.

Lweji · 30/01/2021 11:36

@DGRossetti

I now wonder if Farage was a soviet mole all along.
Except that there are no Soviets since the early 90s. It's Russian. More specifically, Putin mole.
borntobequiet · 30/01/2021 11:39

I now wonder if Farage was a soviet mole all along.

Given that he’s pretty much a comedy caricature, probably yes. Hiding in plain sight seems to be a speciality. I was reminded of this while watching the Crown episode on Anthony Blunt. See also: Melania, Dominic Cummings (I have little to do at present so open to all sorts of conspiracy theories and other nonsense.)

DGRossetti · 30/01/2021 11:52

I was quite deliberate in my use of the word soviet. Just because the USSR collapsed doesn't mean the ideology and hard work of those decades evaporated.

In fact Farages meteoric rise starts after the disintegration of the Stasi ....

When you've spent more than 30 years debunking peoples moronic "theories", it can sometimes lead you to make some of your own up, just for lolz. It's also fascinating that someone who does believe the world is run by alien shape shifting lizards can accuse you of "having a larf" when you suggest that UK passports are made in Poland.
