To tuck my 10.5 year old in to bed every night?

I’m not! I know that obviously because he wants me to (or rather he doesn’t NOT want me to.... not as though he’d shed a tear or anything if I didn’t Grin but he just sees it as bedtime and I like it.

Just wondering when people stopped doing this and What precipitated the change and was it sudden or drawn out?

He goes to bed, reads his book, I come in, we have a quick chat, I sometimes get to kiss his forehead if I’m lucky, and that’s the process.

elastamum that is lovely. Flowers
There's one of my 20s and 30s DCs getting in bed with me in the morning when they're home and i love love love it. One morning over Xmas there was three of us in bed together whilst DH was pottering downstairs. A treasured memory

badgerread · 23/01/2021 20:50

I lay on my DS11's bed every night for a chat, then give him a kiss and a hug good night. Then I go in and kiss my DS16 on the head and tell him I love him too (he goes to bed wayyyyy later than me....!)

AllThirteen · 23/01/2021 20:51

It's not trying to keep them young. It's called love and care and this thread is wonderful. I'm 25 and when I go and stay at my Mum's she still tucks me in or if she goes to bed first, I'll tuck her in and she's in her 50s! Nothing to do with keeping anyone young.

Peace43 · 23/01/2021 20:52

I hate to say it but mine still sleeps in my bed and she’s 10 next week! She can sleep in her own bed but she prefers mine and I can’t think of any really good reason to evict her permanently (I do throw her out some nights just to get a wriggle free sleep).

We still snuggle up to read to our 10.5 year old, he likes it still. He tells us when he's ready to sleep so we leave while he's awake. 12 year old loves stories still too and likes to be read to till he falls asleep, but likes his own space so we sit on a bean bag next to him to read, but yep they both still love the bedtime routine.

I am in my 40’s and I can guarantee if I was sleeping at my parents’ house tonight I would still get ‘tucked in’. It would be in a different form obviously than when I was little, but would still involve a wee chat and a goodnight kiss.

I will keep it going with my DC’s as long as I can.

Frozenintime · 23/01/2021 20:55

Every night, DS chills a bit watching you tube. I always go up to say goodnight and then he turns off his light and goes to sleep. I always say "I love you , sleep well ". It's an important connection

silentlight · 23/01/2021 20:56

My parents stopped even coming upstairs with me when I got to about seven years old. I just hit sent upstairs where it was cold and a bit spooky to put myself to bed. The cat at least used to come up with me. I’m hanging on to tucking my kid in as long as I can, he’s 11 and i can’t imagine him just going to bed without a chat abs a snuggle. Keep it for as long as you can.

fireplaceburning · 23/01/2021 20:58

My 12 and 14 year olds still want me to tuck them in so I do! Takes a minute and it's lovely saying goodnight to them! My mum used to give me a kiss goodnight too and I remember it fondly.

If either of them didn't want it I'd stop but they always ask me to!

HouseyHouse21 · 23/01/2021 20:59

Mine and 8 and 9 and love being tucked into 'burritos' while I read them a quick chapter of the story we're on. Such a nice way of winding down at the end of the day - long may it last.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 23/01/2021 21:01

My boys now come and tuck me in. They are 12 and 14 and I am old and knackered.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 23/01/2021 21:01

Well I think that's lovely. DD (10) is far too "independent" and "grown up" for that Hmm. I'd love to still be tucking her in

FrangipaniBlue · 23/01/2021 21:02

I still tuck DS13 in followed by DH42 (we sleep in separate rooms) Grin

AlwaysLatte · 23/01/2021 21:03

A question for people with older children (my oldest is almost 13). A few times recently he's not fallen asleep till gone 11 which is unusual for him as he loves his sleep. I like to be in bed by 11 these days but also I don't go to bed till they're both asleep. So I've had a few late nights where he's gone up sleep around 1am. Do you just go to bed anyway? If we do he's usually in and out wanting another story/water/chat. I do oblige as I especially worry if there's something on his mind or he's not feeling quite right. It's tiring though! It's a new thing for us - what do others do?

AndcalloffChristmas · 23/01/2021 21:03

I still tuck my 12 yo in! And she often tells me she’ll still want my to when she’s 18!

BlueBoar · 23/01/2021 21:03

It’s so lovely to read all the answers. My DS still sleeps in my bed at 10.5 and loves cuddles. He’s having a hard time at the mo as his dad’s wife is expecting a new baby & they have just moved house. I’m never going to stop him until he decides it. On the nights he sleeps in his own bed, I always cuddle and tuck him in.

fireplaceburning · 23/01/2021 21:04

They also like to come in our bed in the morning for a cuddle too!!

AlwaysLatte · 23/01/2021 21:05

I so enjoy just chewing the fat.
That's the second time I've heard that this week! What does it mean?

Goawayquickly · 23/01/2021 21:06

16 dd still likes being tucked in, we have a chat, maybe she plays me a new song she likes and then a kiss and a hug and tucked in.

RuthW · 23/01/2021 21:06

I stopped when she started going to bed at the same time as me or later. Prob about aged 13-14.

AlwaysLatte · 23/01/2021 21:10

Ha I was just thinking how funny it is that my nearly 13 year old loves being read conspiracy theories these days. Usually he falls asleep (although he seems to have extra energy this last week or so) and I go to bed with dinner-plate eyes thinking about those theories! 😂

YetAnotherWalk · 23/01/2021 21:11

Still read a few pages to my 14yo 50% of the time!

Casade · 23/01/2021 21:13

My son is 9 and still loves me laying with him until he falls asleep. We normally have a cuddle, chat about life and he likes his Moshi music on to go to sleep 😂 I try my hardest not to fall asleep!

Emeraldshamrock · 23/01/2021 21:16

I do it too.
It is nice to fall asleep feeling loved, it is the only time in the 24 hours that DD will allow physical contact if I tried it in the daytime she'd flip.
I think it is a fear too it'll be the last. Blush
Growing up Catholic one prayer haunts me it was scary to sleep "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray thee, Lord, my soul to keep; If I should die before I wake, I pray thee, Lord, my soul to take"

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 23/01/2021 21:17

My 8yo still gets a bedtime song every night 🤣 I can't carry a tune but she loves it and I have told her when she wants me to stop she needs to say and I won't be the least bit offended
