To tuck my 10.5 year old in to bed every night?

I’m not! I know that obviously because he wants me to (or rather he doesn’t NOT want me to.... not as though he’d shed a tear or anything if I didn’t Grin but he just sees it as bedtime and I like it.

Just wondering when people stopped doing this and What precipitated the change and was it sudden or drawn out?

He goes to bed, reads his book, I come in, we have a quick chat, I sometimes get to kiss his forehead if I’m lucky, and that’s the process.

I definitely give my 10.5 a cuddle after he has put himself to bed. No reading to him anymore though, he reads to himself.

mamaduckbone · 23/01/2021 18:07

I still do this with my 11yo ds and read to him sometimes too. I always pop in and say goodnight to ds14 although sometimes he already goes to bed later than me.

GreenSlide · 23/01/2021 18:07

@sunshineandshowers21

i still tuck my 13 year old in. i always end up lying on the bed with him talking and next thing i know an hour has passed. he saves tik toks that he thinks i’d find funny to show me every night. or makes me listen to 90s dance music that he’s ‘discovered’ Grin
That's so sweet Grin

DS is nearly 13 and I still go up to say goodnight and turn his light out every night at his insistence. I am proffered a forehead for a kiss!

I like this thread, its a reminder of the power and the continuity of what mothering means, played out in thousands of houses every day, pandemic or not. The unseen, daily, steadying stuff. Grin

I have 4 boys. Youngest are 9 & 10 they are tucked in every night. Not always read stories but sometimes we listen to an audio book or chat get a kiss and cuddle from both and same from 15 year old when he is here. 19 year old I just pop head round and say goodnight. I always check on them in the night if I get up to the toilet too.

I am loving this thread!

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/01/2021 18:13

Toddler blondes is now nearly 4

Before I go to bed or work (work nights) I go in Her room every night and stroke her head and say I love her. She never wakes

FolkyFoxFace · 23/01/2021 18:15

My dad used to tuck me I to bed u til I reached the age of going to bed later than him (I'd sit downstairs rather than my bedroom). But even then we'd have a hug, a chat, and a cup of tea and a biscuit before he went up. Sometimes even now, I wish I could be tucked in by him or have a goodnight cuddle (he passed a few years ago). I think it's a beautiful thing.

Aquamarine1029 · 23/01/2021 18:16

I tucked them in with a quick loss and an I love you all the way through their teens, and/or they would come into my room to tuck me in if they were up later than I was when they got older. It's a lovely way to end the day.

FolkyFoxFace · 23/01/2021 18:17

into until
My phone hates me today!

@GreenSlide

I'd have given anything to have been tucked in by my parents at that age. Their world is getting bigger and they need their little routines more than ever.
Me too, I have such clear memories of reading ahead in the book my mum was reading to me at night, but not moving the bookmark on as I wanted her to read it to me. I'd got to the end of the book before the next time she read to me though. Reckon I was about 8. Going to do it first as long as I can with my kids.
Onceuponatimethen · 23/01/2021 18:19

@Blondeshavemorefun you won’t recognise me as I’ve nc but I recognise you from the nanny boards! Can’t believe your toddler is now 4 - time flies. Sounds lovely

bloodywhitecat · 23/01/2021 18:21

I used to with my kids, I did it well into teenage-hood, they have both grown into fiercely independent, kind, loving adults so I don't think it did them any harm. I stopped when they wanted me to stop.

Whatafustercluck · 23/01/2021 18:21

Ds is the same age and still insists on it and we're only too happy to oblige. Smile It's lovely and long may it last.

PugInTheHouse · 23/01/2021 18:21

We do give our 12 yo a kiss and cuddle before bed but usually he comes into us to say goodnight as we all go up to bed at a similar time (family of night owls). Not so much with DS 14. He wouldn't want a cuddle or a kiss lol.

ListeningQuietly · 23/01/2021 18:25

Oher end of the day
but on weekend mornings
my kids still like to sit on the end of my and DH bed
and tell us about the random thoughts in their heads
they are both over 20 Grin

1Morewineplease · 23/01/2021 18:28

Enjoy it while you can... he'll let you know when to stop.

cheninblanc · 23/01/2021 18:29

Still tuck my two in, ages 14 and 17. Precious moments that I won't have forever so I enjoy and don't question while I do

Sunnysausage · 23/01/2021 18:34

I’m still reading to them all each night - oldest is 14! We have a different book on the go to the ones that they are reading. I think DS1 doesn’t want me to stop because he’d feel he was missing out as the younger ones still get read to. And they all like a hug/kiss before the light goes off (I’m a night owl so do go to bed later).

LizFlowers · 23/01/2021 18:37

Bless! Enjoy it while it lasts which won't be forever.

I hated being 'tucked in', it took me ages to get to sleep and my mother would come in when I was just cosy and drifting off. I asked her not to and she was deeply hurt! Sad

I never tucked mine in because when he was small, he was always downstairs with us and we'd carry him upstairs asleep when we went to bed. Later on he went upstairs with us and did his own thing.

Your son wanting you to tuck him in is actually rather sweet.

PaperMonster · 23/01/2021 18:38

What a lovely thread!

My nine year old sleeps in with me - I feel blessed that she still wants to!
