To tuck my 10.5 year old in to bed every night?

I’m not! I know that obviously because he wants me to (or rather he doesn’t NOT want me to.... not as though he’d shed a tear or anything if I didn’t Grin but he just sees it as bedtime and I like it.

Just wondering when people stopped doing this and What precipitated the change and was it sudden or drawn out?

He goes to bed, reads his book, I come in, we have a quick chat, I sometimes get to kiss his forehead if I’m lucky, and that’s the process.

Aw - I’m 32 and l live abroad - whenever I’m home with my mum I always get into her bed for half an hour most nights before we say goodnight and we have a nice chat!! :)

SRK16 · 23/01/2021 18:56

My mum popped in to see my every night before bed, just for a quick chat, until I left for uni. I think even when I came home for uni holidays she’d knock and come say goodnight when she went to bed :)

onetwothreeadventure · 23/01/2021 19:03

My mum is staying with us at the moment and I go in for a chat when I’m going to bed. I’m in my 30s!

IndecentFeminist · 23/01/2021 19:04

Totally normal. My parents did well into my teens.
My daughter is the same age and I have a nigh on 9 yr old boy. We sit in our bed together for reading aloud for half an hour or so, then they go to their own beds. We take it on turns to say goodnightbto both, do '100 kisses' (actually 10), do our 'I love yous' and own individual routines with each of them. Time dependent they may then read a little independently before lights out.

My dd is nearly 11, and she still likes me to lie down in her bed with her at bedtime. We still have a bedtime story as well, although now she reads me a chapter before I read her a chapter. Then she chats to me about her day, and likes me to stroke her back til she's sleepy. I'll keep doing it until she's ready for me to stop (I'm over it now tbh, but she's quite insistent that she likes this routine and she finds it difficult to sleep on her own)

jackstini · 23/01/2021 19:08

I still do goodnight and a kiss with mine - 12 & nearly 15

Never occurred to me not to!

Cocacola12 · 23/01/2021 19:11

It’s really sad that someone could even think this was unreasonable. It sounds lovely and normal.

sortmylifeoutplease · 23/01/2021 19:11

My nephew still gets tucked in at same age. I think it's normal x

bobby81 · 23/01/2021 19:17

My 12 year old DS still loves me to tuck him in at bedtime, we have a chat for 20 minutes & it’s lovely.

ListeningQuietly · 23/01/2021 19:20

When my kids started Secondary school, somebody said to them that it was babyish to still have cuddly toys in bed.
Both were very upset.
I called bullshit.
Both took cuddly toys to Uni Grin

Not all kids are the same
but they all love to be loved

Bunnybigears · 23/01/2021 19:21

What actually is 'tucking in?

rhowton · 23/01/2021 19:40

My mum moved in with us through lockdown 1, and gave me a kiss and cuddle every night 😂

TiersForFears1 · 23/01/2021 19:40

I'm still tucking in my 10 and 8 year old after a story. They absolutly love my recollections of the 1980's!

All the pp's are making my heart melt!

TakingTheLowRoad · 23/01/2021 19:44

My two, 15 and 17, tuck me in. They come in for chats every night when delivering their various bit of technology for “safekeeping”. We get snuggles and rubs and kisses and lots of I love yous. I hope it never stops. I must add they’re also home from boarding school and sending them away at 11/12 has not affected our relationships in any way.

BullshitVivienne · 23/01/2021 19:46

This is a lovely thread, as someone with much younger children, I hope I'm still doing stories and cuddles before bed when they're bigger.

collywobble · 23/01/2021 19:49

Still doing it here 16 & 17 bring all their devices up and have a cuddle and a chat in bed . They are usually at their most talkative.

Carysmatthews · 23/01/2021 19:50

My son is 21 and I still go and have a few moments with him at bedtime to say goodnight and give him a kiss. I just like to check in with him.

Makingnumber2 · 23/01/2021 19:50

This thread is beautiful. My DD is only 2.5 but my favourite moment of the day is usually when I read her a story in my bed whilst she has her milk, then we snuggle and sing songs and then I carry her into her own bed. It’s wonderful to know
I could have so many more years of doing some sort of tucking in routine with her.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 23/01/2021 19:51

My 14.5 DS insists I tuck him in every night, after I’ve been and sprayed his pillows with sleep spray and then we have a chat and a cuddle.

He insists he’ll still be wanting me to do it when he’s 18! Smile

tsmainsqueeze · 23/01/2021 19:51

Lovely thread .
I tuck my 12.5 year old in and kiss her still , she loves it , we also have a chat sometimes .
Its a special cosy , secure time and i think its easier for them at that time if they need to talk about any worries .

Marmite27 · 23/01/2021 19:51

My mum always popped her head round my door to say good night and I didn’t move out until I was nearly 30!

Dontletthecatout · 23/01/2021 19:51

@sprig1 you share a bath with your 10yo DS? 😐

Glitterblue · 23/01/2021 19:52

I still go into my almost 11 year old DD's room with her at bedtime, and we have a chat, sometimes she still likes me to read to her, and then she has to put one of her storage crates behind her door when I leave, because if she doesn't, the cat goes into her room and starts trying to climb the curtains, remove her duvet from her bed, climb on top of her wardrobe and generally keep her awake 😂 Her door doesn't catch when it's closed, which is why i don't just close it behind me!

MintyCedric · 23/01/2021 19:53

My DD was 13.5...her dad and I split when she was coming up 12 and we lived with family whilst the divorce was going through.

Stopped going up at bedtimes shortly after we moved in our own place, although she's 16 now and occasionally still climbs in with me for a cuddle and a chat.

MintyCedric · 23/01/2021 19:54

@Glitterblue we have the same cat issue...I've bought DD a door wedge
