to be slightly terrified by people who think the Magna Carta is still sovereign and that the government is operating under maritime law?

And that birth certificates are invalid and steal your identity as a free human Hmm

I keep being recommended a FB group that 3 of my possibly soon to be ex "friends" (people I went to school with and my ex partners sister) have joined and it's a whole new sort of batshittery Confused

I just don't understand why anyone believes this? They're all on about not registering babies and swearing oaths to barons and standing under common law and it's just SO MUCH BOLLOCKS that I'm genuinely baffled as to why thousands of people are taking it seriously. It's quite scary seeing how taken in they all are.

I have a friend who has been taken in by this also. Over the space of a six to eight months, she gone from a normal human being to an angst-ridden conspirator. What amused me was one of her earlier livestreams where she urged everyone to sign up to a ‘common law’ website, to list their name to prove they’re alive. Ie. Not dead. So she doesn’t believe in birth registration, but does trust a random website that could have been set up by anyone.

I do get that you shouldn’t trust everything you read in the press, but some of the stuff she spouts is mind-boggling.

CutsOffCorners · 21/01/2021 16:34

You could be describing ex partners sister there! She's always been a bit woo, but in the last year she has just gone full tin foil hat. I only keep her on FB for the lolz now Grin

It's batshit squared.

Terracottasaur · 21/01/2021 16:35

Be warned, there is a mumsnet lunatic who occasionally posts this stuff - you will call their ire down upon yourself!

HereTodayHereTomorrow · 21/01/2021 16:38

Some of the comments on there are terrifying, especially the woman wanting to deregister herself to get social services out of her life! Confused

Beamur · 21/01/2021 16:38

Someone posted a load of flyers with this nonsense on near where I live a few months ago.

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/01/2021 16:38

Someone has voted YABU. Perhaps they would like to say something?

Standrewsschool · 21/01/2021 16:38

@CutsOffCorners. In a strange way, it’s as equally fascinating as it is disturbing. I thought of deleting her, but haven’t to see what’s next.

Standrewsschool · 21/01/2021 16:39

That’s deleting her of Facebook, not deleting in a Phil Mitchell sort of way.

AlexCabot · 21/01/2021 16:47

Blimey, the biggest issue they seem to be concerned with is getting out of paying council tax. Wonder what the bailiffs make of them?!

x2boys · 21/01/2021 16:51

People are a bit thick ,,I glanced over it ,people asking how to deregister themselves and their kids 🙄surely there will still be a record ?

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 21/01/2021 16:55

Perhaps you should send them this. fullfact.org/online/did-she-die-in-vain/

"A number of posts on social media have claimed that under “Article 61” of Magna Carta people have the right to lawfully dissent or rebel if they believe they’re being governed unjustly... This is wrong.

The original version of Magna Carta granted powers to “assail” the monarch and “seek redress” to 25 barons in order to keep the provisions of the Magna Carta, but these powers were not granted to the population at large. Within a year of being written, this clause was removed from subsequent versions of Magna Carta. It was never incorporated into English statutory law."

CutsOffCorners · 21/01/2021 16:57

I can't see any votes, apparently 0 people have voted! Didn't meant to leave voting turned on anyway.

Oh I think this is what a friend of mine was going on about. Don't you have to send Boris Johnson a letter saying you own yourself or something? I didn't think I was a stupid person, but the whole thing confused me when she tried to explain.

I don't really care if the state want to own me, as long as they understand that I'm for life, not just for Christmas. I may be cute now, but as I get older I've a range of complex needs and they've got to accept that responsibility Grin

BabiSiarc · 21/01/2021 16:57

I used to be a Civil Servant a few years back and we would get correspondence from people like this, usually to justify why they hadn't paid their taxes!

Occasionally people would quote the Magna Carta and our lawyers took great delight in explaining how the law works to help us respond Grin

You could often spot them a mile off because they would refer to themselves as, for example, 'John of the family Smith' as opposed to 'John Smith'.

NewYearNewTwatName · 21/01/2021 17:02

oh posted mumsnet on and off for years.

some of the threads were really quite entertaining Grin

NewYearNewTwatName · 21/01/2021 17:02

*oh they have posted

DdraigGoch · 21/01/2021 17:07

Hilarious references to "doc-tors", "doc-uments" and "berth certificates" in their batty world.

The best bit was where one of them was urging people to refuse to pay for electricity. Another one asked how they were supposed to do that on a prepayment meter. Er...

Has anyone managed to infiltrate the private group? I reckon that the best entertainment must be in there.

Eleganz · 21/01/2021 17:13

Yep it is a whole boatload of crazy. Pointless to really argue with them because anyone that does is just a sucker or in on the big con.

I did have an encounter with one of these nutters who was spouting about maritime law. The guy she was arguing with asked her "are we at sea?" And she said "what has that got to do with anything". These people are so ignorant that they don't even know what the words they are using mean. Having a rational argument with them is like trying to punch a cloud.

AlexCabot · 21/01/2021 17:23

Lots of long words, none of them making sense....

Eleganz · 21/01/2021 17:27

@AlexCabot

Lots of long words, none of them making sense....
It makes me chuckle that they invoke war crimes trials as a caution against their refusal to recognise the validity of the law and the courts in this country. That is unless they are thinking about the individuals who refused to accept the jurisdiction of those courts of course...
OwlWearingGlasses · 21/01/2021 17:29

Why are you terrified? Are they outside your door shaking their spears?

There are all sorts of crazies around. Just look on here. People make up all sorts of nonsense just to annoy a particular group.

Blacktothepink · 21/01/2021 17:29

Basically none of them want to pay any bills 🤣
