To ask you if there was a general election today, who would you vote for?

Just curious really. Seen a lot of hate for the governments handling of various things but they did recently win by a landslide and I’m not sure if people truly believe the opposition could do better.

So if it was just red or blue and there were a vote today, who would you vote for?

I’d vote Labour.

YABU - Conservative
YANBU - Labour

So I will spoil my ballot, because it is my duty to vote, but I have no-one to vote for.

I'm not in the UK so correct me if I'm wrong, but surely voting isn't compulsory? You can't say it is your duty to vote but because you have no-one to vote for you will spoil your ballot. That is not voting, and is pointless - you might as well stay at home.

@flashlarry3

It should be realized that Labour wouldn't have done any better re Covid except possibly waste even more money on it. We're knackered for years to come anyway.
I can’t see Starmer handing over billions for failed PPE and a track and trac3 system that never worked.

And Starmer has been telling Johnson to act and lockdown at precisely th3 times Johnson should have locked down.

leafygarden42 · 22/01/2021 04:50

Interesting result there OP - I voted Labour - I think Keir Starmer would have made a better stab at all this than Johnson has.

Before I saw the results, I thought it would be around 50/50

porcelinaofthevastoceanss · 22/01/2021 05:14

Labour, without a shadow of a doubt. I don’t kid myself that the Labour Party is absolutely full of upstanding politicians but the Conservative party is an absolute disgrace.

PodgeBod · 22/01/2021 05:14

I chose Labour, but thats how I voted before all of this.
Most of my friends/family are Tories, and they are either happy with the governments handling of the pandemic or certainly not unhappy enough to change their vote. "Poor Boris is doing his best" is a common attitude.

SimonJT · 22/01/2021 05:27

@DaphneBridgerton

I don't understand why people are so surprised that other vote Conservative... surely it's obvious?
The only obvious thing is that those votes are racist, sexist and homophobic.
SimonJT · 22/01/2021 05:45

People saying they would vote Tory for womens rights.

How is a party who reduced benefits available to parents (so having a greater impact on mums), requires parents to work more hours to be able to claim certain benefits (so having a greater impact on mums), the party have been attempting to reduce access to abortion, the income required for a child to be FSM was hugely reduced (again a bigger impact on mums), refused to increase carers allowance (again more likely to impact women). The Tory party requires a woman to prove her child was the result of rape and she needs the support of at least two professionals if the child is her third child and she requires financial assistance. The Torys slashed the budget for the women and equalities department as they don’t think its important. Changes in rules means fewer women who lose their jobs due to unfair dismissal due to pregnancy are able to take their case to tribunal. The domestic abuse bill failed to legalise abortion in Northern Ireland and continued to leave women at risk of criminal proceedings.

These are just a few things the conservatives have done that negatively effect women.

How can someone claim they would vote Tory due to being good for women, yet also be voting for policies that have made life a lot harder for a lot of women.

pam290358 · 22/01/2021 05:49

Boris. Been a labour voter all my life but can’t imagine voting for them now after the shit that’s gone down over the last few years. Not keen on Keir Starmer TBH.

pam290358 · 22/01/2021 05:54

@SimonJT. I don’t consider myself racist, sexist or homophobic but I voted Tory at the last election because I simply didn’t have confidence in any other party, and being female I’m mindful of wasting the hard won right to vote. WOKE issues are not the only things to consider when voting.

Yet you voted for sexist policies.

Being against benefits being limited to two children is not woke.

Being against the income reduction for FSM is not woke.

Being pro equal access to abortion is not woke.

pam290358 · 22/01/2021 06:00

@leafygarden42. But wasn’t Jeremy Corbyn Labour leader at the last election ? You were essentially voting for him, not Starmer ?

PurpleFlower1983 · 22/01/2021 06:00

Labour.

Kokeshi123 · 22/01/2021 06:05

Labour Labour Labour

Still an awful lot of crazy elements in there in spite of KS. But Beano Boris and his lot are just so unremittingly awful.

pam290358 · 22/01/2021 06:10

@ SimonJT. I get your point but you have to pick your battles and I was replying to your assertion of the WOKE issues in your last post. There are good and bad policies on both sides and you have to make an informed choice. At the end of the day it’s a personal opinion and the OP was asking for a black and white choice between Labour and Tory. BTW - I’ll probably bring a shitstorm down on my head for this but I actually agree with child benefit being limited. If people want to have more than two children they need to make sure they can afford it. Or is personal responsibility considered a Tory trait ?

Supporting women is not woke.

Forcing victims of rape to prove they have been raped to be able to provide for their child is abhorrent.

pam290358 · 22/01/2021 06:26

@SimonJT. Not disagreeing with you on any of these issues. I was just commenting on one of your replies which WAS quoting WOKE issues - you labelled Tory votes as racist, sexist and homophobic and I was pointing out that there is a broad spectrum of reasons why people vote the way they do. I voted the way I did because I thought it was the best way forward for the country as a whole given the turmoil the Labour Party was in at the time of the election.

If someone actively votes for policies that are sexist, racist or homophobic, it would be odd for that person to claim they weren’t sexist, racist or homophobia. Its like voting for the SNP and claiming you’re against devolution.

I don’t see how not being sexist, racist or homophobic is woke.

Monkeytennis97 · 22/01/2021 07:03

Labour. How the hell could anyone vote for the current bunch of incompetents?

pam290358 · 22/01/2021 07:21

@SimonJT. So by that logic if you vote for a party which has been found to be anti Semitic, would that make you anti Semitic by association ? The EHRC investigation into the Labour Party found serious failings in their handling of anti semitism complaints and at least three breaches of the Equality Act. There was also evidence of harassment, political interference in anti-Semitism complaints and failure to provide adequate training to complaints handlers. They concluded that the culture within the party at best, did not do enough to prevent anti-Semitism and, at worst, could be seen to accept it." We could go on and on like this, but in the real world, I think most people vote based on policy concerning the issues important to themselves - high agenda issues like the economy, the NHS, immigration etc. No party is perfect, and there are issues with policy on both sides, but I simply don’t agree that voting for one party or another makes you consciously or unconsciously sexist, racist, homophobic, anti Semitic or anything else for that matter.

Firstimer703 · 22/01/2021 07:32

Agree with @DynamoKev . Greens for me! They could do an amazing job I think. Labour lesser of two evils probably but the choice we face is dire. We have an election coming up in Wales and whilst I think things are bad, I can't see much alternative being offered!

FellowFlipFlop · 22/01/2021 07:43

I'm astonished that anyone can look at all the ways the Tories have failed (recently voted down an amendment that would stop them selling off the NHS to American insurance firms for example, being happy to starve kids until shamed out of it by a footballer)

If your grasp on what's going on is this poor its probably best if you don't vote

derxa · 22/01/2021 07:50

Its like voting for the SNP and claiming you’re against devolution. People vote for the SNP for all sorts of reasons. Anti Tory and anti Labour being two of them. Devolution is already here so I think you mean against independence.

MarinPrime · 22/01/2021 08:29

Not sure i could ever vote tory though, I dont really understand why anyone does!)

I'd vote Tory.
But I can understand why others may vote differently.

NewspaperTaxis · 22/01/2021 10:36

For the reason why I can't vote Conservative (my local MP is Chris Grayling) you could check out my post about adult social care on this parallel thread about Theresa May.

I'd tactical vote Lib Dem. because it's always better them & the tories down here. Then hope Labour get in.
