To ask you if there was a general election today, who would you vote for?

Just curious really. Seen a lot of hate for the governments handling of various things but they did recently win by a landslide and I’m not sure if people truly believe the opposition could do better.

So if it was just red or blue and there were a vote today, who would you vote for?

I’d vote Labour.

YABU - Conservative
YANBU - Labour

It would depend on the leader of the Conservative Party. No way if it’s Johnson. Probably vote for Keir Starmer.

LynseyLou1982 · 21/01/2021 08:52

As a working class northener I would never ever vote Tory so labour for me

Hoiking · 21/01/2021 08:54

Conservative. Always have, and until a party emerges who are actually interested in making hard choices, not just ideological pandering, I always will.

Catnuzzle · 21/01/2021 09:00

Same as last time, I'd spoil my vote. There is no-one who represents my views.

Bluntness100 · 21/01/2021 09:02

Absolute idiots voting for a party not the candidate in their constituency

God how rude, hurling abuse on line. Nice.

MarinPrime · 21/01/2021 09:03

Based on similar posts on mumsnet before previous elections most mumsnetters will vote labour.
And look how that ended up.

HmmSureJan · 21/01/2021 09:03

Tory as I cannot in good conscience vote for a party so dangerous to women and their rights as Labour are.

Suzeyshoes · 21/01/2021 09:04

@Empressofthemundane

Like I said, it’s been three weeks Wink the impact of brexit will hit for the next decade, especially on the back of covid.

My DH did lose his job though, directly due to brexit but, meh.

Suzeyshoes · 21/01/2021 09:06

@HmmSureJan

You’re the third person I’ve asked but can you explain why Labour are dangerous to women please?
The Tory record on women’s policies is abysmal.

HmmSureJan · 21/01/2021 09:16

Well they don't believe men are women for starters and aren't actively trying to implement policies that remove women's spaces and rights and actually put women and girls in danger. I'm aware that this hasn't always been the case and that it was a Tory government who initially began a consultation on reform of the GRA but thankfully they appear to have seen the box of snakes that self identification is and allowed the nonsense to subside...for now.

Also the way that Labour Party members and activists go after women in their own party in general disgusts me. Till that is addressed I cannot vote for them.

NonCisWoman · 21/01/2021 09:17

@Suzeyshoes

Labour do not let women talk about their biology.

They think that men belong in women's safe spaces, such as prisons and rape shelters.

They expel anyone who questions this nonsense. For example, they wouldn't let Karen Ingala Smith, a notable campaigner on violence against women, join.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/01/2021 09:18

Including me, @Suzeyshoes, for no apparent reason, seeing as I hadn't said they were!

Suzeyshoes · 21/01/2021 09:23

It really surprises me how many people say things along the lines of ‘I’d vote ... Always will. ‘

It shows such entrenched beliefs. Honestly, there’s no point having policies if it’s just a question of picking a side like a football team.

Political parties swing to the right/ left of their side. Johnson’s Tories are further right than we’ve been for decades. Corbyn’s Labour was far left. Policies change constantly. This is why we’re living through the biggest shit show in modern history. Nobody actually wondered whether Johnson et al would be any good at the job.

Hoiking · 21/01/2021 09:29

I'll always vote conservative because I don't think we should have a nanny-state. Until Labour stop being on the left, I'll not vote for them 🤷🏻‍♀️.
I am right wing in most of my political opinions.

Fizbosshoes · 21/01/2021 09:34

I have no strong allegiance to any political party.
I usually read through what the local candidates are proposing although it barely makes a difference as our town is die hard conservative and vote based on that. We have a Tory MP who initially (while I didnt vote for him) looked more promising than the last useless old dinosaur that we had. But he has turned out as useless. (And just as keen on a cut and paste letter that doesnt address your concerns) The lib dems candidate in our area is much more engaged with local issues, gets involved on SM, gives out useful information whereas the MP is largely anonymous, unless wanting to blow his own trumpet (usually for something that has nothing to do with him!) I think he wanted to claim credit for reduced pollution/emissions during lockdown 1. Hmm

Suzeyshoes · 21/01/2021 09:34

@NoWordForFluffy

Sorry, No word, that was a mistake, obvs.

ToffeePennie · 21/01/2021 09:37

Neither. If forced to choose between I would spoil my ballot paper.
If given any other option I’d vote Green Party.
That way there’s no culpability on me for the shit show that ensues.

Suzeyshoes · 21/01/2021 09:44

@NonCisWoman

Ahh, it’s the gender question. Now it makes sense.

If you’re interested in the protection of women then Johnson’s record should fill you with horror. He’s utterly failed on rape convictions and domestic abuse. Very few women in senior positions. And his treatment of working women during lockdown has been horrendous. He is, of course, a total misogynist to add to all of that.

MrsSteveMcDonald · 21/01/2021 10:05

Nobody is saying that the Tories are good for women it's just that by actually acknowledging we exist they are one up on Labour. Don't forget that both Labour and the Lib Dems said that they don't want gender critical women voting for them.

FellowFlipFlop · 21/01/2021 10:07

I'm so sick of hearing people claim the tories are "against feeding hungry children" - no, they're just not taking the action YOU want them to take. I look at who supports the parties and think is this the narrative I want to be mainstream. And the identity politics of the lefty Labour supporters, where the worst thing in the world to be is white and its a race to the bottom is not a country I want to live in.

Plus I support university fees and think privatising parts of the NHS isn't necessarily a bad thing so I'll carry on voting Conservative. I think they've done a better job than Labour would have done handling coronavirus. Not to say they've done a good job, but the thought of a Labour government in charge of this is quite scary, especially the one we would have had if they'd won the election

Seriouslymole · 21/01/2021 10:09

@DynamoKev

YABVU There are plenty of other options, SNP, Plaid, DUP, Sinn Fein, UUP SDLP etc etc etc And you must be forgetting we have a green MP too.

Difference between Labour and Tories at present is like shit and shite frankly.

This.

"Would you rather eat dog poo or cat poo". Um neither....

unmarkedbythat · 21/01/2021 10:30

Is it more feminist to vote for a party who define women in a way you agree with but enact policies which hurt them, or for a party who define women in a way you disagree with but whose policies cause less harm? I can predict a lot of answers to this would be of the "their definition of sex and gender is inherently harmful to women, the removal of spaces segregated by biological sex would cause harm" but there is obviously a LOT more to harm of women than definitions and single sex spaces.

DynamoKev · 21/01/2021 10:41

I'm so sick of hearing people claim the tories are "against feeding hungry children" - no, they're just not taking the action YOU want them to take.
Kids are still hungry under Tory government though.

Perfect28 · 21/01/2021 10:49

How anyone in their right mind could possibly even entertain the thought of voting tory after this absolute shit show I have no idea. I really hope you didn't stand outside clapping for carers, if you did, you're disingenuous.

MooseBreath · 21/01/2021 10:50

Labour. I'm not a die-hard fan of the party, but the past decade of austerity and absolute bullshit needs to end. So many people are suffering.

I genuinely wonder if those who would still vote Tory have any sense empathy.
