To have zero sympathy for the fishing industry?

The U.K. fishing industry voted overwhelmingly for Brexit ; 92% voted Leave according to a poll from June 2016 (source : The Guardian).

Now they are bleating about the massive logistical and administrative problems and delays that they are encountering in trying to export their catch into EU markets. Today, fish transportation companies have been driving their lorries around central London to protest about the situation.

But this is what they voted for : to ‘take back control of our waters’. They voted Leave in the full knowledge that most of the U.K. catch was exported to Europe, and that that would obviously be more difficult after Brexit, so they should suck it up & stop whinging.

Depends what you think accept means really!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:15

@Shrillharridan you can choose not to accept it , but its happened so its too late. Moaning all over mumsnet or facebook isn't going to change much.

donquixotedelamancha · 18/01/2021 22:16

the PM at the time of the vote , not now !!!

Ah. I presume the people blaming 'Tories' are talking specifically about the current leadership and others who a) Lied in the election b) Made a fuck up of the negotiations.

Tellmetruth4 · 18/01/2021 22:16

They said they knew what they were voting for in 2016 and they doubled down in 2019 cheering on as experienced and sensible remain MPs were fired and replaced by absolute spanners.

They hated immigrants, foreigners, the liberal elite, Londoners and experts more than they wanted to be able to feed themselves and their families.

They knew what they voted for. They were seduced by lies which they knew were lies but appealed to their nastier natures. They thought the price would only be paid by those they despised.

Hope the sensible ones can retrain. Not a penny in bailout money or subsidies should go to them. They said it was a price worth paying. Let them pay it.

nicky7654

Brexshitters calling people who point out the consequences of your actions stupid?

Did you also call the people who pointed out years ago these were inevitable consequences names??

chomalungma · 18/01/2021 22:16

@jasjas1973

Its done , people really need to learn to accept it

Nope, i don't accept it and tbh if that what these fishermen also think, i don't give a shiney about them either.

I accept it.

I think any change and renegotiation will have to come from the people who realise what the effect of Brexit is on them.

Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 22:17

Depends what you mean...
Moaning = posting facts
I (and many like me) intend to make these leave MPs very uncomfortable and hold them to account for what they've done.
I won't forget.

GCAcademic · 18/01/2021 22:18

In recent years, British people have been persuaded to eat all kinds of things that, twenty years ago, would have been unfathomable. Like quinoa or avocados. The fishing industry needs a good marketing push. There’s no genetic reason why Europeans like fish and we don’t. And, even if there is, I’m sure the 17 million Brexit voters can be relied upon to do their patriotic duty and make a success of what they voted for by eating lots of fish.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:18

@chomalungma the ham sandwich is just a stupid media thing. Just eat it before , we have drivers that go to non eu countries all the time they manage to eat their Ham sandwiches before.
Plus we are a couple of weeks in , short term issues were always going to be ( even more so with current times) lets see where things are in 6 months, when both sides have got used to things a little more.
Lets face it in a couple of years I suspect we will have a different govermemt so things may change again ( not a full in eu though I doubt)

LexMitior · 18/01/2021 22:19

Ah yes, state run fish restaurants. The solution

Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 22:19

They should ship all the fish to leave areas.

Let them eat fish! 🦐🦞🦀🐟

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 18/01/2021 22:20

You reap what you sow, thoughts and prayers lol

Namechangeforte · 18/01/2021 22:21
@chomalungma but they were not in charge for the vote when people got their say.
@Scottishskifun
I hardly have any sympathy. The world and their aunt is learning new skills online and leaving their towns and cities to go where the work takes them. If it comes down to that, they will have to learn. I don’t think it is such a doomsday’s scenario either. A huge number of people have lost their jobs and livelihoods, as a combined effects of Covid and Brexit.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:23

@GCacademics exactly if we can give up turkey twizzlers we can do anything Smile
Joking aside yes fishing industry needs a good marketing campaign.
I live and know people who live by the sea who haven't tried a lot of fish, bet that was different years ago.
You go to greece etc they eat a lot of what they have near.
Except lambs , I have never seem a lamb in greece , yet its so popular on their menu

Namechangeforte · 18/01/2021 22:23

@donquixotedelamancha

People blaming tories , the pm was not for brexit.

Eh? He was on the vote leave campaign committee and was their most prominent spokesperson. He was all over the news for months.

I clearly remember him standing in front of that infamous bus.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:25

@Lexmitior no one said that, but been plenty of campaigns that have encouraged people to try other things , say free range chicken etc.
People are often trying to cut out meat a little so maybe fish for some is an alternative.

Tellmetruth4 · 18/01/2021 22:28

Duncan Carswell has relocated to America, Dyson to Singapore, haven’t seen those creeps Hannan or that Wetherspoons guy for a while, Farage is hiding from FBI questioning. Traitors each and every one.

But you know what I bet that the useful idiots who voted for Brexit will still forgive all of these people and blame their poverty on the EU, foreigners, Londoners, experts etc etc. They will never ever blame themselves. There’s a significant number of people on the U.K, particularly England who genuinely believe we are exceptional. It was all too easy for snake oil salesman to promise them BS based on them being superior to everyone else.

It’s almost Shakesperian.

Do you have any calculations or data to show how much of this fish do the British public need to consume to balance the loss of the EU market? I am most certainly not going to have to live through the tantrums of my family if they were to fed fish thrice a week.

But U.K people seem to love thinking that Europeans are ghastly and brits are superior and are right to be deeply suspicious of their foreign fish eating ways. So that doesn't bode well. Brits are, apparently, proud of being unadventurous in their eating habits.

Scottishskifun · 18/01/2021 22:32

Fish mongers and restaurants already have to change the name of fish in order for brits to accept it and that's the fish they will eat....... I can't see them eating half of what is caught!

Know what a rock salmon or rock turbot is..... Made up is the answer dog fish and wolf fish because brits are so fussy they won't order it if called dog or wolf fish!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:32

@namechangeforte like already said we were talking about the pm who was pm when we had the vote.

chomalungma · 18/01/2021 22:33

I love going to France and seeing the amazing fish counters.

I don't think they have the live fish tanks anymore containing crabs and lobsters.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:33

@Scottishskifun I thought it wasn't allowed to be called rock salmon anymore though

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:34

@chomalungma i have seen places here have it years ago.
Not that I could do it as I have to not see what I am eating.
