To have zero sympathy for the fishing industry?

AgeLikeWine · 18/01/2021 19:19

The U.K. fishing industry voted overwhelmingly for Brexit ; 92% voted Leave according to a poll from June 2016 (source : The Guardian).

Now they are bleating about the massive logistical and administrative problems and delays that they are encountering in trying to export their catch into EU markets. Today, fish transportation companies have been driving their lorries around central London to protest about the situation.

But this is what they voted for : to ‘take back control of our waters’. They voted Leave in the full knowledge that most of the U.K. catch was exported to Europe, and that that would obviously be more difficult after Brexit, so they should suck it up & stop whinging.

Yes well they all had a conversion and came to love Brexit. Tories definitely can say they were pro. 2 elections on Brexit and now try squirming out of it by saying some Tories were for remain. Who is that now?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:01

@chomalungma but they were not in charge for the vote when people got their say.

tobee · 18/01/2021 22:01

@donewithitalltodayandxmas

People blaming tories , the pm was not for brexit. Half the tories if mot more were remain. Also anyone know which goverment were in power when we sold a lot of the fishing Rights ?

Yes yes let's not blame the Tories! A Tory pm didn't set up a ridiculous referendum which told us nothing about what would happen afterwards, did he? A Tory pm and government didn't push through the referendum and negotiated (still negotiating) shit deals? And lied and lied and lied again to further the wealth and careers of a few of their mates?

ListeningQuietly · 18/01/2021 22:02

@changedmynamelol

Yanbu.the EU do not want British fish. Can you really blame them? Certainly not
countries in the EU definitely do want British fish BUT as the UK is now outside the EU we have to comply with the same rules as every other country outside the EU as per WTO rules

Which has been known since 2016
but ignored by lots of idiots

1Morewineplease · 18/01/2021 22:02

@Porcupineintherough

I'm old enough to remember the days when the fishing industry was pushing for bigger and bigger quotas right up until the point fish stocks collapsed. As far as I can see they've always been shortsighted idiots and I've no sympathy whatsoever.
Yes... I remember the Cod Wars. The British only seemed to want cod, either battered from the chip shop or covered in Nein crumbs. The bulk of the cod lay a bit outside our waters... damned cod wouldn't keep still! But by the 70s/80s no one ate hardly any fish other than the succulent white fish that hardly swam around our own waters. So the Europeans bought all the fish around our waters... herring, pilchards, sprats, dabs, langoustines, mackerel , shellfish etc... How many of us regularly serve herring, mussels, pilchards etc... for our supper? Children these days , only eat fish in a neon crumb. Which brings me to a report yesterday that enormous catches have rotted while waiting for clearance to the EU.
Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 22:02

Soames, Clarke, hunt, Rory....all gone.
Replaced by thick, inexperienced yes men and women.
The tories like mogg want a return to the 30s when poor people knew their place and workers rights and the welfare state did not exist.
Well done leavers 👏
It'll be here before you know it.

bellinisurge · 18/01/2021 22:03

I sort of pity anyone that was duped. Some will take longer than others to realise this. The longer it takes, the weaker my sympathy. The more of a Leave gobshite you were, the less you have of what little of my sympathy is going.

chomalungma · 18/01/2021 22:03
@chomalungma but they were not in charge for the vote when people got their say.
The ERG got their way with the Tory party and this is where we are left.

Get Brexit done
It's done.
Zero shits given

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:04

@LexMitior the vote went through though when mostly a remain party.
Then they filled up with more pro brexit as that is what the people wanted and how to get re elected.
Wether you personally agree with that , it was a democratic vote.
If you want to get in power you have policies that you think will help you win.

tobee · 18/01/2021 22:04
@tobee because its often expensive and people are not sure what to do with it.
Easily rectified , I know lots that want to try more fish and who are starting to now just not sure how to prepare. Not me personally as I don't like it.
It might be a nice idea but it's been tried before and not changed many attitudes. I love fish but hardly ever buy it because it's expensive and hard to get variety of fish that's very fresh. Sadly.

@tobee all the information was out there to be found about the pro's and cons, and many were worries about how things were going to change.
Its done , people really need to learn to accept it . Maybe in the future other parties will offer to try and re negotiate or go back in. Then people will have a chance to change again.

donquixotedelamancha · 18/01/2021 22:08

People blaming tories , the pm was not for brexit.

Eh? He was on the vote leave campaign committee and was their most prominent spokesperson. He was all over the news for months.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:09

@Shrillharridan you think only white people voted for brexit ??

Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 22:09

God, his face the morning after!!!!!
He looked like he was going to puke!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:09

@donquixotedelamancha the PM at the time of the vote , not now !!!

Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 22:09

No.
Just the huge majority.

ListeningQuietly · 18/01/2021 22:10

2016 : Take back control

2017 : Brexit means Brexit

2019: Get Brexit Done

people had three chances to check the facts.
ZERO SYMPATHY
for those who thought they were special

jasjas1973 · 18/01/2021 22:10

because its often expensive and people are not sure what to do with it
Easily rectified , I know lots that want to try more fish and who are starting to now just not sure how to prepare. Not me personally as I don't like it

Apparently not! So you want british people to start eating fish they now don't want (like you) but you yourself won't try anything new because You don't like it!!! WTF!

jasjas1973 · 18/01/2021 22:12

Its done , people really need to learn to accept it

Nope, i don't accept it and tbh if that what these fishermen also think, i don't give a shiney about them either.

Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 22:12

I'm allergic to shellfish but like fish generally.
Its very easy to cook but can be rather bland

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:12

@jasjas1973 I have tried it and I don't like a lot of it , I am not going to force myself.
Maybe read what I said, which was that I know a lot of people that would like to try more but struggle to get it and or no what to do with it.
There are people on this thread who say they would like the opportunity to get more.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:13

@jasjas1973 but you kind of do as you can't change it yet!!

Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 22:13

I will never accept it.

Leavers agitated for decades (you'd think they'd have had some sort of a plan?...)

The fightback started on 1/1/21 😁 🇪🇺

chomalungma · 18/01/2021 22:14

I actually quite like happy British fish. Grin

There is starting to be a shortage of certain food stuffs appearing, complaints about the extra costs of exporting to Europe and of course, the EU taking control of their borders and not letting in ham sandwiches.

It's almost as if some of the stuff that was talked about is coming true.
