To have zero sympathy for the fishing industry?

AgeLikeWine · 18/01/2021 19:19

The U.K. fishing industry voted overwhelmingly for Brexit ; 92% voted Leave according to a poll from June 2016 (source : The Guardian).

Now they are bleating about the massive logistical and administrative problems and delays that they are encountering in trying to export their catch into EU markets. Today, fish transportation companies have been driving their lorries around central London to protest about the situation.

But this is what they voted for : to ‘take back control of our waters’. They voted Leave in the full knowledge that most of the U.K. catch was exported to Europe, and that that would obviously be more difficult after Brexit, so they should suck it up & stop whinging.

@Shrillharridan

Well, frankly, you haven't being paying attention then scottish I was spat at once. Just do a search on this forum for the brexit Arms and see what kind of names remainers were called. Or check out past editions of the daily mail or telegraph...or, you know, just open your ears and listen. After 4.5 years of it I'm done with these moronic fuckers. I'm just doing my best to mop up their mess.
Nobody should be treated that way based on their opinions. It definitely wasn't the experience up here. I deliberately don't read newspapers as they all have their own agenda and working in the public sector I know how often it's wrong or manipulated. Everyone is in a tough situation especially so the last 12 months and it's still going to be tough for months to come. Compassion is needed on all grounds regardless of how people voted over 4 years ago.

I do believe people were mislead and disillusioned but we need to move on and support each other surely rather than take chunks out of people or wish poverty on others especially given the current circumstances?!

Brefugee · 18/01/2021 21:40

The fishermen will have to retrain. You know, like the miners did, like the steelworkers did, like anyone who worked in heavy industry did.

It's a fact of life

Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 21:42

Nope.
I'll support my way, you do you.
The sheer evil touted by supporters of leave.eu will never leave me.
Its only 4 5 years ago the a sitting MP was assassinated on the street for supporting remain by a farage and edl fan.
All leavers need to look really hard at who they voted alongside.
I suspect they won't though. It makes for a pretty uncomfortable realisation.

Namechangeforte · 18/01/2021 21:43

@Shrillharridan

But leavers are speshsul don't ya know. Well, at least the independently wealthy architects of brexshit are anyway. They've made a nice little amount shorting the £
Absolutely this ^. But I find it very hard to believe that we can actually explain the process of shorting the £ to the people who fell for lies about their very own industry. As an example, we knew what the impact was going to be in the financial sector and in other related industries. Mainly due to the decades of experience in the sector. I am finding it really hard to believe that the fishing industry, and other industries that voted for Brexit and are now suffering, did not know the impact on their own livelihood. People like @nicky7654 feel entitled enough to call posters stupid who have simply pointed out this fact in a slightly less sugary way.
Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 21:44

The tories are now bluekip.
The GOP in the US has been overtaken by trump supporters.
Its scary how easily - and quickly - it happens.

LexMitior · 18/01/2021 21:45

Yes the grand irony of Brexit is that the areas most affected voted for it. There’s more red tape, less freedom to trade, and more restrictions on the market.

Genius. Can’t wait to see the internal subsidy policy of a Tory Government that don’t want to raise tax. Interesting

Namechangeforte · 18/01/2021 21:47

@donquixotedelamancha

17,410,742 people voted to leave Europe. That means you only have 17,388,662 other people jobs to throw away away because they "deserve it". You'll need to hurry though - Boris is doing a lot of it for you.

This. There were many reasons people voted for Brexit- some were valid, many were based on lies.

It's not the fault of any one group of people that democracy is imperfect. If we want our democracy to be better we need to start by removing the worst PM in British history.

Nobody of any political persuasion should want to see that chimp in office for even more day. The blame lies with the Liar in Chief.

This is a poor attempt at deflecting the blame to one person. Democracy means you have responsibility and you owe it to your country to own your mistakes. Boris wouldn’t have been sitting there if people hadn’t voted him in. How simplistic if you to reduce it all down to one person. This is why we are in a mess.
Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 21:47

Its interesting isn't it?
HUGE car plant locally.
Workers were told before the vote that if we left the eu they couldn't guarantee keeping the plant open.
They voted leave in big numbers...the union rep was utterly disbelieving.

Why can't fishermen retrain?
Like those dreadful ads for the arts?

Ballet dancer? Retrain as a plumber!

Adapt or die. Simple.

AgeLikeWine · 18/01/2021 21:48

Yes, they were naive, yes they voted selfishly (but that applies to most of us). The punishment for being naive and selfish shouldn't be the loss of your business and the destruction of your community.

Why not?

Why shouldn’t people get what they vote for? Why shouldn’t turkeys who insisted on voting for Christmas, despite having been warned repeatedly by experts about what happens at Christmas, end up on the table?

OP posts:
LoungeLizardLhama · 18/01/2021 21:50

Yes they were lied to as were we all but even if they didn’t understand what they were really voting for they knew who they were voting with. Farage who could only be bothered to turn up to 2 out of 42 meetings on fishing, out and out racist Johnson, disaster capitalist Rees Mogg. You can judge a man by the company he keeps and they’ll get no sympathy from me. I just feel sorry for the rest of us dragged into this brexshit shit show.

changedmynamelol · 18/01/2021 21:50

Yanbu.the EU do not want British fish. Can you really blame them? Certainly not

Tistheseason17 · 18/01/2021 21:52

YANBU
We all have a responsibility to investigate the facts and not rely on red tops or social media for the truth when we vote! You get what you vote for- only sympathy for 8% who have been shafted - ignorance is no defence.

jasjas1973 · 18/01/2021 21:52

As the PP said, we have a vote, its up to us to use it wisely and not be led by the nose by populist politicians.

If we don't then we've only ourselves to blame, people knew what Bojo was like as he was lord mayor and post brexit, foreign sec, so we knew he was an idiot..... yet gave him a landslide to do whatever he wants as PM.... inc negotiating a very poor deal- no surprise.

Polls still show Lab and Con quite close, so we haven't learnt.

tobee · 18/01/2021 21:52

"Why are people turning on the farmers and fishermen instead of the treacherous liars who are sitting pretty, with fat bank accounts and watching in glee as the ordinary people tear each other apart?

Blame those who were really to blame!"

But people actively voted for these shysters! You can't only blame the government. People chose to believe what they were told. The government would just be maniacs shouting in the wind if people didn't put an X next to their name in the ballot box and put them in power @Tanith

Not to mention the fisheries minister who didn’t bother to read the trade deal because she was organising nativity. It’s criminal apathy and negligence to do even the most basic of your duties, and whoever voted for it will learn their lesson the hard way.
Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 21:55

Omg.
I hate to break this to you.
NONE of them have read it.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 21:55

Maybe we should start selling some of it here , not loads of places to get fresh fish and hard to get some as goes abroad.
Start marketing to the uk as well , I know loads of people who don't eat fresh fish, mussels etc as they don't know what to do with it.
Yes they have a bit of salmon from supermarket.
Plus its still early days , everyone still getting used to new procedures.
Let see of still an issue in 6 months time.

chomalungma · 18/01/2021 21:57

There was a woman who owns a shellfish company

Sept 2019

www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1183363/brexit-news-no-deal-boris-johnson-wales-fisheries-nerys-edwards-syren-shellfish

Nerys Edwards of Syren Shellfish in Wales admitted to having already spent £40,000 to prepare her business for a no deal Brexit scenario. She said the extra burden on her company was unexpected as she did not imagine she would have to take on such an expense when she voted for Brexit in 2016. But asked whether she regretted voting to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum, she shocked the Channel 4 News reporter with a resounding and prompt “not at all”.
She added: “I knew when I voted Leave that it would directly affect my business, both my businesses - the farming and the shellfish.

“But I also believe that I am not the important person here.

“The whole nation is important so for the greater good is why I voted out.

“And for my grandchildren and their future, that’s why I voted out.”

Then Dec 2020

www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-55631622

After boarding a ferry to Caen, it was then held by French customs for another seven. Ms Edwards said that the importer in France had made a mistake on the document that he needed to complete.

"I can't do this again next week," she told BBC Wales. "I need a break.

"But I can't leave the fishermen without incomes for long."

She added: "We're a tiny little Welsh company, its family run - we're fourth generation running it. We can't afford to take the hit."

''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

Zero fucks for her.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 21:57

People blaming tories , the pm was not for brexit. Half the tories if mot more were remain.
Also anyone know which goverment were in power when we sold a lot of the fishing Rights ?

friendlycat · 18/01/2021 21:59

I could never ever understand how they bought into the “lies”. Who in their right mind votes to leave the EU when it’s your biggest export market. In one swoop they voted to make it difficult to trade with their major customers.

It would have been even worse with no deal. In time some of these delays in transportation may be ironed out but also their EU customers in the meantime will be looking at new supply chains without this hassle. It was utter madness I’m afraid.

Scottishskifun · 18/01/2021 21:59

Would love to know what fisherman are supposed to retrain as?

These are rural communities with not much around. The oil and gas downturn has made 10,000 redundancies in the last 12 months, renewable industry is largely based out of Edinburgh over 3 hours drive away from Peterhead or Fraserburgh. As for fishing industries on the remote West Coast or Shetland Isles...... What do you suppose a shetlander fisherman retrain as?
Ever been to Shetland......there is 1 tesco Lerwick has a few banks a few shops and a couple of hotels.

These aren't city communities and are minimum hours drives away, there isn't some remote scottish call centre available...... Hmm

It's far better to try to resolve the situation and save the jobs then have more unemployment!

chomalungma · 18/01/2021 21:59

People blaming tories , the pm was not for brexit. Half the tories if mot more were remain

The current Tory Government and its MPs are very much a Leave party.

Shrillharridan · 18/01/2021 22:00

All of the remainer tories are gone.
Purged.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/01/2021 22:01

@tobee because its often expensive and people are not sure what to do with it.
Easily rectified , I know lots that want to try more fish and who are starting to now just not sure how to prepare. Not me personally as I don't like it.
