To have zero sympathy for the fishing industry?

The U.K. fishing industry voted overwhelmingly for Brexit ; 92% voted Leave according to a poll from June 2016 (source : The Guardian).

Now they are bleating about the massive logistical and administrative problems and delays that they are encountering in trying to export their catch into EU markets. Today, fish transportation companies have been driving their lorries around central London to protest about the situation.

But this is what they voted for : to ‘take back control of our waters’. They voted Leave in the full knowledge that most of the U.K. catch was exported to Europe, and that that would obviously be more difficult after Brexit, so they should suck it up & stop whinging.

I feel sorry for anyone whose business is screwed. I feel immensely frustrated by the fishermen, who were warned repeatedly, and many of whom have been pretty aggressive and unpleasant to Remainers on street stalls for example.

But if I could help them out I would. We all suffer if British industries fail.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 18/01/2021 20:07

I watched a documentary about a woman who ran a fish business. She voted Leave and said it would probably be the end of her business. Who does that? She and the others deserve everthing they asked for, and now have. I have no sympathy whatsoever. And I hate fish Grin

Buddytheelf85 · 18/01/2021 20:07

God aren’t some people on here just lovely?! Does it make you feel all superior?!

What would you prefer people to say?

‘Oh dear, this totally unforeseeable mess that absolutely no one predicted and couldn’t possibly have been avoided is awfully sad.’

Totallydefeated · 18/01/2021 20:08

YANBU.

They had all the warnings. More fool them if they were silly enough to fall for the ‘Project Fear’ gaslighting.

Whiskyinajar · 18/01/2021 20:09

Thing is, they won't regret voting Brexit, They just blame Boris for not getting a good enough deal.

I can't feel any great joy that they are suffering though. They were lied to.

Totally agree. I reached a point where I stopped feeling sad and prepared myself for the f*cking whining by groups in society who were clearly going to be worse off with Brexit but voted for it because they swallowed lies.... then voted again for more of the same shit at the 2019 GE. Fuck them
adeleh · 18/01/2021 20:11

I wish it were as trivial as people just feeling superior. Unfortunately everyone has been screwed. It’s reasonable that people who never voted for this might be massively and enduringly pissed off.

Seeingadistance · 18/01/2021 20:13
@AgeLikeWine

No sympathy I agree. But it’s mainly the Scottish fishermen and Scotland voted remain. As for the English ones no sympathy. Sorry.
Not everyone in Scotland voted remain, and those in the fishing industry were the reason the leave vote was much higher in Moray, for example.

NailsNeedDoing · 18/01/2021 20:13

I can’t see how they were lied to in any meaningful way that means they deserve sympathy. We all know that governments lie, that leaving the EU came with guarantees of nothing and that there were going to have to be negotiations. No one who voted for brexit deserves any sympathy for the problems they face because of it.

pelosi · 18/01/2021 20:13

I read that a lot of fishing companies had sold their rights to European businesses anyway, so there will still be European trawlers in British waters.

1Morewineplease · 18/01/2021 20:14

The trouble is, our own fishing waters contain vast quantities of herring alongside pilchards, dabs and langoustines to name but a few of the the other fish that the UK don't want to eat. The Spanish have , for a long time , loved all these fish/shellfish.
The UK mainly wants cod which isn't too plentiful around our waters to satisfy our need for fish and chips or fish fingers.

Interesting to hear, this morning about a rich , British businessman who has bought a huge amount of land in Iceland, much to the chagrin of Icelanders , to protect our salmon "rights."

LooseMooseHoose · 18/01/2021 20:14

Weren't they between a rock and a hard place though? Under the EU, the system meant that France had (I think) 60% of the fish quota within what is now UK waters. I can see if you're struggling to make ends meet you'd want that to change. It's not their fault they have now been screwed over by their own government as well. And I say that as a remainer.

Narniacalling · 18/01/2021 20:16

@LooseMooseHoose
Only because they fucking sold it to them!

jessym · 18/01/2021 20:16

Just wait until the car factories in places like Sunderland, which voted massively for Leave, start closing.

We warned about that, too....

VinylDetective · 18/01/2021 20:16

@OhWhyNot

What about the 8% who didn’t vote to leave

Confused

What about them? They didn’t ask to be fucked over.
Sobeyondthehills · 18/01/2021 20:16

I would like them to start asking Farage, Johnson and others exactly what they are going to do about it and hold them to account for this.

I feel for them, its not a job I could or want to do

However what is going to happen is Farage, once the shitstorm really gets going is off to mainland Europe, while Johnson starts doing the public speaker sector and in the meantime more businesses will go under and it will be the public dealing with the shit storm, with 48% of the voting population really pissed off and god knows how many of the 52% thinking its all Johnson's fault and at least 1 complete idiot still waiting for the 350 million pound for the NHS

ItsJustARide · 18/01/2021 20:18

Turkeys voting for Christmas

Buddytheelf85 · 18/01/2021 20:20

They were lied to. They've been screwed for years by the likes of Nigel Farage failing to fight their corner. I won't gloat now they've discovered they were conned. Anyone can fall for a scam.

You’re being too kind.

A scam is where someone tricks you - rings you up pretending to be from the police saying you need to transfer all your money to a ‘safe account’ immediately.

This wasn’t a trick. We were all warned, time and time again, over a long period, of what could happen by many experts. All the relevant information was available to all of us. That’s a decision.

It’s the equivalent of transferring all your money to the ‘safe account’ while your bank manager and all of the Financial Conduct Authority are sitting in front of you telling you not to do it because it’s a scam.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/01/2021 20:24

Yep, I feel the same about the farmers round here who were nearly all gung-ho brexiteers and, now that they've realised what an utterly epic mistake they've made, they're all feeling sorry for themselves.

BringPizza · 18/01/2021 20:25

Every time I saw someone trying to explain how Brexit would end up costing them, the response was "Project Fear!!!". So I have no time for fishy whah whahs now.

Agree. Of course the politicians lied, that's what they always do on the campaign trail, it's nothing new. The fishermen who voted for Brexit had pound signs in their eyes, as did the people bitching about the actually tiny amount of money going out of the country in child benefit.

You won folks, get over it and stop complaining.

RedFrogsRule · 18/01/2021 20:25

For everyone feeling sorry for them and objecting to any expressions of lack of sympathy I think it’s worth remembering these fishermen are the same people who crowed and were pretty vile when the Eu vote went their way. There are a lot of frustrated people who voted remain and saw this coming. They endured mocking and jeering. Expecting them to be sympathetic and understanding now is a bit of an ask

Narniacalling · 18/01/2021 20:25

It’s just teething problems
Surely Hmm

DimidDavilby · 18/01/2021 20:26

We were all fucking lied to. David Cameron did a shitty thing for this country when he put together that ill thought through referendum he really did.

zoemum2006 · 18/01/2021 20:26

The government have lied and lied and then lied some more. I feel sorry for anyone harmed by decisions that were governments responsibility.

It’s not the role of ordinary people to make decisions without access to the full information.

DimidDavilby · 18/01/2021 20:30

fishermen are the same people who crowed and were pretty vile when the Eu vote went their way

Were they? How many fishermen do you know personally that were doing that?

It's a shitty situation, fishing is a heritage industry with a huge ammount of associated skill, indigenous knowledge and culture. Families will be out of work for the first time in many generations.

Fishermen were outright lied to by that Farage fuck, and then have been ignored ever since.
