To think DH is being ridiculous to not eat this?

Mushroom pie with instructions on packet to cook from chilled and to defrost in the refrigerator. I'm running out of time so defrosted on counter. He found packet and is now moaning and refusing to eat it because it might give him food poisoning. AIBU to think he is being absurd?

OP posts:
Staffy1 · 17/01/2021 19:10

Wow, wouldn't have thought it made much difference. I'm quite fussy but this wouldn't bother me in the least.

bobbojobbo · 17/01/2021 19:10

Sorry, but it is not safe to defrost food on a counter at room temperature. I know you’ve been socialised to think it is safe, but that is peculiar to the British

Ouch for you....this response was to me and I'm not British and don't live in the UK.
You do seem to enjoy being wrong!

Rebelwithverysharpclaws · 17/01/2021 19:19

I have been doing dodgy things in my kitchen for more than half a century and not one person has ever had a bad tummy, ever. Defrosting on the side is mere baby steps.

Cheeseandwin5 · 17/01/2021 19:23

Point him to the kitchen and go have a sit down with the pie.
Pour yourself a glass of wine too

nocoolnamesleft · 17/01/2021 19:30

Any excuse to not have to eat mushrooms.

Love51 · 17/01/2021 19:31

@KirstenBlest

Don't you cook your pies from scratch?
Or use fray bentos, they don't need defrosting!

Clearly OP uses a pie made in a factory, that can be frozen.
My fridge doesn't actually defrost stuff, which is more likely to cause food poisoning than the side in the UK in winter!

iklboo · 17/01/2021 19:36

AND you can use the tin as a frisbee afterwards.

Gobbeldegook · 17/01/2021 19:40

More for you then isn't there.
He can starve.
Last week we had salmon fillets that I'd froze over a year ago. Packet said only freeze for 3 months. Nowt wrong with it.
Don't always have to pay attention to the instructions. Common sense can be used.

JovialNickname · 17/01/2021 20:15

Run it under the hot tap whilst holding his stare aggressively, then drop kick it into the oven.

Pah! That's too hygienic. Thaw it out under your boobs (yes I know you've eaten it now but a tip for next time).

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/01/2021 20:42

Actually using hot water to defrost is very unhygienic. You can’t run it hot enough to kill anything. The heat only makes the bacteria spread and multiply faster.

IamGateshead · 17/01/2021 20:43

The last time I tried to defrost in the fridge it took 2 days to thaw pork chops!

I'm sorry, but this suggests you have problems with how you manage your kitchen.

I guess you could call it enjoyment. I’m just shaking my head and thinking, eh well it’s Darwin’s natural selection at work. All these people playing food poisoning roulette with their dodgy kitchen habits will just remove themselves from the gene pool eventually.

You’ve not tried mine, with cream and Sherry. Yum.

Pepsi cola is disgusting, btw 😬

Mushroom pie-related fatalities still have to be pretty rare though, right?

Thefirsttime · 17/01/2021 21:02
@KirstenBlest was joking yes? I thought it was obviously tongue in cheek. Always amuses me when people read things differently 🤣
I thought

was obviously joking/being sarcastic too. And I appreciated the humour.

Whatisthis543 · 17/01/2021 21:05

Just to be clear this is a mushroom pie right? Not a seafood and mushroom pie? If so he is BVU

You’d think so. At least OP didn’t go picking random wild mushrooms to make the pie. I’d be upping my internal score sheet for possible Darwin Award nomination.
InterfectoremVulpes · 17/01/2021 21:11

What i dint understand is why some pies can be cooked from frozen, some need defrosting and some can be cooked from chilled or* frozen.

*same applies to other foodstuffs too.

Feelingpoorlysick · 17/01/2021 21:22

As long as you defrosted it in a fairly cool room and not in direct sunlight it will be absolutely fine. He's being silly.

WTF?! Perhaps you'd like to share some tips about how I should 'manage my kitchen' as you are so much more knowledgeable than me.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/01/2021 21:32

Whereas people who defrost in the fridge live forever eh
Like that frozen meat in that fridge😂

NoWordForFluffy · 17/01/2021 21:37

There are some very odd people on this thread!

 1. It's perfectly safe to defrost on the side and stick the food item in the fridge once it's defrosted;
 2. It's perfectly normal for fridges to be so cold that defrosting takes way longer than the packet suggests it will. There is no kitchen mismanagement in this.

I'm glad you both enjoyed your pie, OP!

Ah yes - you think 2020 was bad, but Covid fatalities will be nothing - NOTHING I TELL YOU - compared to the millions of misguided Brits (and millions of other people too because this is not a peculiarity British thing whatever at @PlanDeRaccordement seems to think) dying of DEFROSTING FOOD ON A KITCHEN COUNTER. VERY FEW OF US WILL SURVIVE (despite the fact we all have so far). Enjoy your mushroom pies while you can people. 😁🤦‍♀️🙄
