Neighbour won’t give me my parcel

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 13/01/2021 11:25

I ordered some things from a friend who accidentally sent my parcel to the wrong address (she put 1 in front of my actual number).
I know the neighbour has it as it’s been signed for on Hermes, I’ve knocked and knocked and I know they’re in but they won’t answer the door to me so I can’t get my parcel.
I can’t ask the seller as they have personal things going on and a very poorly DC so it’s not fair to put this on them. Anyone know where I stand please other than mailing them an envelope full of glitter? It was a lot of money and I’m very pissed off!

@Glenorma

I’m having a similar dispute at present. My house name is Lakeside, my address is 1 Nowhere Street, Anytown. M&S sent me a parcel addressed like this:

Lakeside, 1
(two lines of unnecessary blank space)

Anytown
Nowhere Street
Postcode

So Hermes assumed the delivery address was Lakeside 1. There’s no street called Lakeside but there is a Cakeside. So they delivered the parcel to number 1 Cakeside. They said it wasn’t their fault because it was addressed to Lakeside 1 and they delivered it to Cakeside 1.

The dispute is still ongoing. M&S say they printed the correct address just the layout was wrong. It was clearly an L not an C, and the postcode was clearly for my house not for Cakeside which has a different postcode. Hermes say it’s M&S’s fault for not printing the address in a sensible order. The people at number 1 Cakeside don’t care because they got a free beauty advent calendar and they have no intention of giving it back.

There is a place called Cakeside??? 😂

If they are clearly ignoring you I would get the police involved.

Touchmybum · 14/01/2021 20:53

How many people posted without reading the whole thread ffs?!

I often don't answer my door if I'm not expecting anyone, especially after dark. If it's someone I want to see they will contact me, and I do not engage with cold callers.

Guess I was lucky then - a delivery company delivered a Michael Kors handbag to someone the same number house on a different street, plus a different name - the person delivered the parcel to my door!

CleanAndPaidFor · 14/01/2021 21:41

Really @vulvacious? I clearly cross posted with your mea culpa. You clearly posted before reading the thread.

@Cheeseboardandmincepies

Wasn’t expecting this many replies. I got the parcel after being asked to show my drivers licence and a form of address even though they came to my house to drop said parcel off. Was very bizarre but I did get it.

Sorry to dissapoint that I didn’t do a Phil Collins outside their house. 😂

Haha, asking for proof of address from someone at that address. So strange, especially as the parcel wasn't even addressed to your address. At least you got it without any more problems.
Lovelydovey · 14/01/2021 22:02

I think they were sensible to ask for this - if there is any comeback on them they know who has collected it. It’s a known scam for someone to turn up at the door and ask for the “misaddressed” unsolicited goods delivered to you.

ChaToilLeam · 14/01/2021 22:05

Glad to hear you got your parcel, OP!

dressedupinyou · 14/01/2021 22:11

This happened to me and I waited 3 days. The parcel was delivered to a neighbour I hated and it was mutual. I even had a note in the order to say not to deliver it anywhere else.

I could see my £300 item sat in her porch and knocked quite a few times. She was in and ignored the door each time. On my day off, I sat in the window for two hours until I saw her go to her car and then I pounced. She huffily gave it to me and I thanked her very sweetly.

Well, it was war after that. 😄

Disappointed that you didn't take the Phil Collins advice. Sad

Glad to hear you got your parcel. :)

Stack knocking at 6am. They will soon get pissed off enough and open the door.

sneakysnoopysniper · 14/01/2021 22:22

Not quite the same circumstance but I once traced a misdirected parcel to my next door neighbor after speaking to the courier. I went around with my nephew and stood just our of sight while he knocked. Of course she did not know him back then. I then asked for my parcel and told her I had just spoken to the courier who was "willing to make a statement" to the effect it was there.

Neighbour denies all knowledge of parcel. Nephew gets his phone out. "Well I strongly advise you to ask the other members of your family if one of them took it in as if we have to leave without it I will call the police and report it as theft." Neighbour scuttles back inside. Eventually she re-appears with parcel which has been opened. Both of us start yelling at he as to why she had kept someone elses property. The parcel was labelled with my business name so she starts to whinge that "I didnt know it was for you" "Well you bloody well knew it wasnt for you."

Nephew looks at phone. "I think we need the police anyway". Neighbour starts to cry that it was a "misunderstanding". I tell her that she is a thief and that I will be warning every courier and postie of that and also warning all the other people in the street about her.

I kept my word and to this day if Im expecting a parcel I pin a note on my door:- PLEASE BANG LOUDLY. DO NOT LEAVE AT NUMBER X - NOT HONEST!

Can you ask someone she does not know to knock at the door and lurk our of sight until she opens it?

Alternately the suggestion that you will call at XX time and a hint that you will have to take the matter further with the authorities if there is no response.

Deidre21 · 14/01/2021 22:23

Neighbors are very much in the wrong for stealing it if you do know and have proof it was delivered to them due to incorrect number but your name
That is not Hermes fault

The seller’s fault for incorrect address and she should provide some sort of compensation should you not receive the items as you gave her the correct number
Just like it would be Hermes fault if the correct address was on it and Hermes had delivered it incorrectly to the neighbor

If you were not in and Hermes delivered it to them telling you where it is then it is back to being the neighbors having stolen it

Can’t understand why some people can be this way.

Deidre21 · 14/01/2021 22:25

Good to hear it was sorted in the end

sneakysnoopysniper · 14/01/2021 22:37

Hermes seem to be very lax for this sort of thing. A couple of weeks ago I found a parcel left outside my door - correct street but for a house 5 minutes walk away. I am mobility impaired and had no way of getting it to them. Fortunately I managed to nab another neighbour who was passing with her dog and ask her to drop it off.

Prove it.
Catsandallthingscrazy · 14/01/2021 22:59

Maybe they are deaf or another form of hearing impairment ? Note is surely the best bet !

Bridewel1 · 14/01/2021 23:18

Glad you got it back. But it seems only because you persevered. And I can’t fathom our why on earth they’d ask to see your drivers licence. Yet shouldn’t they have looked at the name on the package when they received it and then could’ve told Hermes to take it back noticing your name. Mind you I don’t always look but know if I’ve ordered something but if I hadn’t I look at the name as soon as I was handed it. So maybe they were expecting something? Or not. And surely if there’s a stranger nocking a few times you’d think they’d twig that maybe it’s the owner of the parcel.

StoneofDestiny · 14/01/2021 23:22

OP - did they actually explain why they never opened the door to you?

Grenlei · 14/01/2021 23:34

Sympathies, some people are just thieves. I hope your neighbours next shit is a hedgehog!

I have had this happen twice with valuable £2-300 items left with 'neighbours'. One was left at a house that seemed unoccupied (we knocked various times every day for 3-4 days after, no answer and no evidence of furniture when we looked through the window). Got a replacement from Amazon, but left a nasty taste someone basically stole my parcel.

Worse than that, my DC was sent an expensive gift by courier which was delivered to another house in our street. It would have been very obvious what it was, and at the time it was a highly in-demand item. There was only 1 occupant of the house, who denied signing for or receiving anything. We had to report it to the police and get a crime number to get the item replaced. Police action - they called the occupant who said 'it wasn't delivered to me'. End of investigation. Again, I know damn well they did get it, and probably gave it to their grandchildren. Fuckers.

llizzie · 14/01/2021 23:48

oakleaffy: that may be the fault of pay pal if you used them, because they store the address correctly and give it to the seller. I am glad you got your parcel back. You certainly should have done.

susantrubey · 15/01/2021 03:24

Just report it missing to Hermes.

Bookworming · 15/01/2021 04:04

Just report it missing to Hermes.

🤦‍♂️

SingingInTheShithouse · 15/01/2021 05:19

I get that you are trying to be kind to your friend, but if she can sell you the item, then she & only she is responsible for sorting this out as it's her mistake. She cannot be in business & only do the bits she likes, that's not how it works & you do her no favours allowing her to think that's okay.

I wouldn't answer the door to you either, my house, my prerogative, nobody elses business even in normal times, let alone now 🤷‍♀️ unless I already knew why you were there, so you do need to leave a note & you also need to redirect your answer to the person at fault here & that is your friend who sold to you & incorrectly addressed, not your neighbour

SingingInTheShithouse · 15/01/2021 05:22

Redirect your "anger" 🤦‍♀️

CleanAndPaidFor · 15/01/2021 07:36

@vulvacious Prove it? Seriously? The time stamps demonstrate that I posted as you were apologising for posting without reading the thread. Ergo, I cross posted with you. I'm going to leave it there. Have a good day,
