Neighbour won’t give me my parcel

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 13/01/2021 11:25

I ordered some things from a friend who accidentally sent my parcel to the wrong address (she put 1 in front of my actual number).
I know the neighbour has it as it’s been signed for on Hermes, I’ve knocked and knocked and I know they’re in but they won’t answer the door to me so I can’t get my parcel.
I can’t ask the seller as they have personal things going on and a very poorly DC so it’s not fair to put this on them. Anyone know where I stand please other than mailing them an envelope full of glitter? It was a lot of money and I’m very pissed off!

If people don't want to wade through the entire thread can they at least click to read the OPs posts.

@Dramaqueenbee

Legally, they have 30 days to get it to you (unless you agreed a longer day). Once that passes, you are legally entitled to a refund and they must give it to you. If you spent over £100 then your credit card company will do a charge back. If you didn't spend more than £100 then you can get template letters online to send them which will demand a refund and see what they say.

If you really want the record however, then tey phoning them and speaking to someone. It may be easier if you can hear each other's tone.

SunshineCake · 14/01/2021 18:22

@rosiejaune. How would they have known there was a parcel at the wrong address?Hmm.

Covidcovid · 14/01/2021 18:22

@Glenorma

I’m having a similar dispute at present. My house name is Lakeside, my address is 1 Nowhere Street, Anytown. M&S sent me a parcel addressed like this:

Lakeside, 1
(two lines of unnecessary blank space)

Anytown
Nowhere Street
Postcode

So Hermes assumed the delivery address was Lakeside 1. There’s no street called Lakeside but there is a Cakeside. So they delivered the parcel to number 1 Cakeside. They said it wasn’t their fault because it was addressed to Lakeside 1 and they delivered it to Cakeside 1.

The dispute is still ongoing. M&S say they printed the correct address just the layout was wrong. It was clearly an L not an C, and the postcode was clearly for my house not for Cakeside which has a different postcode. Hermes say it’s M&S’s fault for not printing the address in a sensible order. The people at number 1 Cakeside don’t care because they got a free beauty advent calendar and they have no intention of giving it back.

I’d be tempted to stand outside their house with a placard detailing what they’ve done so the neighbours know what thieves they are.

@ScaredOfDinosaurs. Agree with you, it is more or less what I was going to say

Nanny0gg · 14/01/2021 18:40

OP, I do hope you've remembered to cancel the cheque...

FFS PEOPLE!! Read the bloody updates! She's got the parcel!!

riceuten · 14/01/2021 18:45

Usually I'd say "This is down to Hermes and they need to make good". But this isn't a commercial transaction, and you were not the Hermes customer. And Hermes, to be fair, didn't know that your neighbours would steal the parcel. So I don't think, other than putting a note through the door, there is much you can do.

Some people are utterly evil, I must say. Pinching parcels belonging to someone else is lower than a snake's posterior.

Hermes did nothing wrong! They delivered to the address on the parcel. The business gave the wrong address so yes it is a business transaction although the customer and business knows each other making it more complicated.

Thankfully OP you got it back. I assume they wanted to see ID to check your name matched the parcel rather than check you live at the address you answered the door to.

wildraisins · 14/01/2021 18:55

@Cheeseboardandmincepies

Wasn’t expecting this many replies. I got the parcel after being asked to show my drivers licence and a form of address even though they came to my house to drop said parcel off. Was very bizarre but I did get it.

Sorry to dissapoint that I didn’t do a Phil Collins outside their house. 😂

Lol that's hilarious that they made you show proof of address even though they were at your address!

People are odd sometimes!

Cherrysoup · 14/01/2021 18:59

I wondered if the neighbour is deaf? Good result, OP. Proof of address when you opened the door to them?! Interesting!

peak2021 · 14/01/2021 19:25

Thank you for updating us that it has finally worked out. I think Phil Collins will cope without the extra royalties.

anon666 · 14/01/2021 19:27

Drop a kind, non-judgy friendly note in their letterbox.

They might just not take house calls from unknown people.

Ddot · 14/01/2021 19:28

Put a note through door explaining what happened and that you would be grateful if you could collect it from them. Keep knocking till you get it. If after three days you have not had a reply, post a letter saying as you have not recieved your parcel you will be reporting the matter to the police and a solicitor (as well as posting to locals in the area about the situation so the same thing does not happen to them) this last thing maybe empty threat. Wait a few more days. Fingers crossed

Ddot · 14/01/2021 19:29

Oh you got it thats good

NoPointInWednesdays · 14/01/2021 19:31

Please RTFT people....... SHE GOT THE PARCEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad you got it op will they be on next years Xmas card list lol 😂

cherish123 · 14/01/2021 19:33

Firstly, I would try knocking again when they are actually in. Then put a note through the door explaining what happened. If still no response, I am afraid you will have to speak to.the seller (your friend). It's their mistake - they may have to compensate you.

cherish123 · 14/01/2021 19:33

Good that you got it.

Ddot · 14/01/2021 19:34

Just realized you can look at op posts hehe

Alpal1 · 14/01/2021 19:40

If a parcel was sent to my address without my name on, I would not assume it was for me! It’s highly unlikely they didn’t realise it was a mistake and really sucks that felt it ok to keep it. They have no legal entitlement to the contents of the parcel. It is theft if they do not return the goods when asked.
In your shoes I would contact the police or perhaps a without prejudice letter reminding them that the parcel is not theirs
Good luck.

pollymere · 14/01/2021 19:49

Sadly, it's the seller's fault but a common mistake 😢. Usually you need to go back to the Seller for non-receipt of goods and its up to them to retrieve them. I would put it on your local FB group. Hi, does anyone know who lives at "my address plus 100" as my friend accidentally sent my daughter's Christmas present there. Works a treat for parcels like this where we live 😂. They may not know your name.

Ohhhh · 14/01/2021 20:01

I would just cancel the cheque OP Hmm

SallyB392 · 14/01/2021 20:15

Maybe they are shielding?

Just pop in a note with your contact details and ask them to contact you to arrange for you to collect your parcel, otherwise you can only go back to the person you purchased it from.

amispeakingenglish · 14/01/2021 20:17

It is ILLEGAL to keep goods that you know aren't for you. If you can prove the parcel went to that house I'd go from there. Send a signed for letter saying you know they have your stuff and it's illegal, you can prove the parcel went there and you have the proof.

MyMonsteraisDeliciosa · 14/01/2021 20:27

Have you thought about putting a note through their door OP? Or phoning the POLICE?
Just cancel the cheque ok? 😂😂

vulvacious · 14/01/2021 20:31
@vulvacious do you honestly just read the first post and that's it? You can stand down. The parcel and the OP have been reunited.
Looks like you didn't RTFT either...
