Neighbour won’t give me my parcel

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 13/01/2021 11:25

I ordered some things from a friend who accidentally sent my parcel to the wrong address (she put 1 in front of my actual number).
I know the neighbour has it as it’s been signed for on Hermes, I’ve knocked and knocked and I know they’re in but they won’t answer the door to me so I can’t get my parcel.
I can’t ask the seller as they have personal things going on and a very poorly DC so it’s not fair to put this on them. Anyone know where I stand please other than mailing them an envelope full of glitter? It was a lot of money and I’m very pissed off!

if all fails, a post on your local FB page often seems to work a treat!

Boomboombroom · 13/01/2021 11:55

Well I mean they can’t open it - it wasn’t addressed to them.

You could send a parcel to Australia when it was meant for someone in America and only the person in America could open it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/01/2021 11:55

@WorraLiberty

Not answering the door is a clear indication they're a Mumsnetter Wink

If you've seen them out and about, why not approach them then?

I was just about to write that the neighbours are probably reading this here. But then they are sitting there watching tv, rather than hiding🤔😁

Op, yes to note through the door or stuck it on their window when they are ignoring you. How odd

WalkingOnStarshine · 13/01/2021 11:57

I would have thought, that if your name is on the parcel, they shouldn't be keeping it because it's not addressed to them. Regardless of the address on the parcel.

Do you notice if they leave their house at a regular time, perhaps for work? I'd do my best to approach them in the street so that they can't avoid you. If they deny having it while you have proof from the tracking that they do, then I'd report to the police for theft. And let them know that you'll be doing that, your parcel might miraculously appear.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/01/2021 11:57

Why should anyone issue a refund? This is the address given. Seller shouldn't be out of pocket for sending something to an address they were given...

Tiktokersmiracle · 13/01/2021 11:58

Knock again, if they are obviously in and ignoring, post a note saying if you do not receive your parcel in 24 hours you will call in police for theft.
I would also make sure neighbors know you have theives living on your street.
Do they have a landlord? If so I would find out and tell them

WalkingOnStarshine · 13/01/2021 11:59

OP said that the seller put a number 1 in front of the address, so I assume it was the seller who mucked up.

Sparklfairy · 13/01/2021 12:00

Because of CV I'd try a note first. I still go out but I wouldn't answer the door tbh without knowing what it was for/expecting something. They might think you're a very persistent Jehovah's witness Wink

VettiyaIruken · 13/01/2021 12:02

It's the sellers mistake. It is their responsibility to rectify their error.

Oh! Sorry! I misread because the friend is then called a seller and I thought it's two separate people 🤦🤦🤦 Like ordered through a friend🤦 My bad! Sorry
LegoPirateMonkey · 13/01/2021 12:04

@Oldbutstillgotit was there anything the police could do? Did you get a replacement out of her?

SunKeepsShining · 13/01/2021 12:04

@SaltyTootsieToes

Post a letter through their door explaining what’s transpired and you know from Hermes that they have signed for the package and have GPS tracking, give your mobile number to please text you when they put it outside their door so you’ll pop by right then to collect so a) no inconvenience on their part b) no need to hand over in person so you’ll be socially distanced. Ask them to text you if they dispute Hermes tracking so that you can contact the police for mail theft as a crime reference number is required to lodge a claim with Hermes.
This is a great idea. Allows them a get out of jail free card to stop being idiots and return it knowing they will face legal issues if not.
Longdistance · 13/01/2021 12:06

It doesn’t matter if it’s got the wrong number in it. Anyone normal would find out who it belongs to.
I agree with popping a note through the door, if that doesn’t work park your car(s) across their drive. That should wheedle them out of their house to talk to you.

Viviennemary · 13/01/2021 12:06

The seller of the item is the one at fault here. The parcel was wrongly addressed. Her mistake. She needs to refund you.

Thehop · 13/01/2021 12:06

I’d also go with @SaltyTootsieToes idea.

Calmandmeasured1 · 13/01/2021 12:06

I'd make sure my note was very apologetic. I'd also suggest you wear a face mask when you go round in case they don't want to open the door and be unprotected.

Fatherbrownsbicycle · 13/01/2021 12:07

@Oldbutstillgotit Shock how did they think they would get away with it? What did the police do & did they replace your hamper?

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 13/01/2021 12:09

I’ve taken advice and popped a note through the door explaining.
It was over £100 worth for my DC so I’m anxious to get it back. Fingers crossed they aren’t the type of Mumsnetter you want to avoid. 😂

I gave the right address. It was the seller who added the extra number to my address. Blush

Good luck OP, do let us know!

GoldenLabbie · 13/01/2021 12:12

Surely it’s theft if they don’t hand the parcel over?

BusterGonad · 13/01/2021 12:12

Umm. Why would their landlord give a shit? So long as they're paying their rent as per contract then I don't think the landlord would care about the Tennant's pocketing a parcel delivered to their house with their address on it.

MessAllOver · 13/01/2021 12:13

Leave a note. I doubt they're keeping in on purpose. Was the item you ordered one with general appeal?

GoldenLabbie · 13/01/2021 12:13

BTW, what kind of weirdo doesn’t answer their front door? What if it was someone important knocking?

LagunaBubbles · 13/01/2021 12:14

How weird! Who in earth doesn't open their door when its chapped, esoecially since they know they have something that doesn't belong to them!
