To think this will largely be over in two months?!

I’m home schooling at the moment and surprised by how many other parents seem to think that this lockdown could continue for the rest of the academic year. I’m expecting the worst of the lockdown to be over by Feb half term - I.e. when millions of the most vulnerable will have received the vaccine, winter is almost over, and the seasonal drain on the NHS is alleviated. What am I missing?! I also believe we will be able to go on “normal” holidays again by Easter...

You are joking!! I said in March the virus would still be circulating in a years' time, was told I should be certified.

NoProblem123 · 12/01/2021 19:26

I’ve been offered the vaccine today so booked it and it’s THIS Thursday - All adults in the household THIS Thursday !
Feeling much more positive today.

ConfusedcomMum · 12/01/2021 19:27

Good for you NoProblem123.

Therealone · 12/01/2021 19:27

Thanks @Stovetopespresso

namechangereq · 12/01/2021 19:28

@Elephant4 we aren't trying to eradicate it. Literally no one believes that is what the vaccine will do.

It just stops people getting really ill, therefore easing pressure on health systems.

So many irrationally negative people on here. Can't tell if it's relishing in doom or mental health issues.

Lelophants · 12/01/2021 19:30

Because of the other strains, some of which might not work with the vaccine. :( the fact other countries are behind us on vaccines and you can still carry it if vaccinated. We also a need a lot more people vaccinated in general.

I have hopes by December though:)

A lot of us got told that. People like to stick their head in the sand then get upset when it doesn't work out liked they wanted.
crazychemist · 12/01/2021 19:32

@BlueSussex

I think Feb half term is very unlikely but maybe after Easter if people follow the rules.

By that, I mean fuckwit employers aren't insisting that staff who could easily work from home come into an office using public transport, people who have no real exemption stop being babies about wearing masks, and those who should be self isolating actually do it.

From a very cynical point of view.... lots of people disobeying the rules might mean greater immunity in the community and therefore this fiasco ending sooner (but with a larger number of deaths in the meantime). Obeying the rules reduces the number of deaths, not the timescale for lockdown.
namechangereq · 12/01/2021 19:33

@crazychemist it does seem that these huge case numbers are stealthy building some form of herd immunity (how long lasting, we don't know) but it's getting through people faster than the vaccine...

Janonomouse · 12/01/2021 19:34

I don't think things will be back to normal (or close to normal) this year, but expect that restrictions will loosen (including the return of children to schools) at some point. I don't think the vaccine program will be successful enough to prevent further restrictions next winter.

AlwaysLatte · 12/01/2021 19:34

I'll be amazed if schools go back before Easter.

scotsllb · 12/01/2021 19:37

I'm moving house next week and sky have told me that if my broadband is not able to be connected from outside my property, then they will rearrange the appointment for after the restrictions have lifted.

The engineers are unable to enter properties as of last Tuesday apparently.

I have a teen homeschooling, one at college online and myself uni online.

AIBU to think that broadband is an essential service in these times?
I'm terrified at the prospect of being without internet during this

NoProblem123 · 12/01/2021 19:41

@ConfusedcomMum

Good for you NoProblem123.
Post was to demonstrate key worker rollout is gathering pace. I wasn’t expecting this until March at the earliest. Not a stealth brag, sorry if it came across that way.

Oops sorry didn't mean to post that here
MrsJBaptiste · 12/01/2021 19:43

DH works for an airline and has come home tonight having had it announced that for his airline, there will be no flying until 26th March.

I therefore think schools will be closed until Easter then fingers crossed, they'll get them back in for the last term.

Ch3rish · 12/01/2021 19:44

@Jangle33

I don’t think the vaccine is this silver bullet you expect! Boris has said he hopes kids back in some form before the summer holidays and Chris Whitty that we should have restrictions next winter. Covid will be with us a very long time it’s just what level of death is acceptable.

As for holidays abroad, dream on! Even if it’s in control in the U.K., no suggestion it will be elsewhere.

When did CW say that @Jangle33? Yesterday I heard him say that wasn't what he said at all, has he changed his view today, that's quite concerning
Ori2021 · 12/01/2021 19:44

I think I need to get cancellation cover for my July UK holiday to the Isle of Wight. Fuck

namechangereq · 12/01/2021 19:45

@Ch3rish he didn't say that at all. Don't worry.

ivefuckinghadenoughnow · 12/01/2021 19:46

I think it will be a phased opening starting with reception, Y1 and maybe Y6 (to prep for secondary school) after Feb half term, rest maybe a gradual return over a few weeks, maybe wait until after Easter and return them all.
I don't think we'll have 'normal' holiday at Easter, i think May half term is more likely to be able to go abroad with a less worry you might have to quarantine, but i think masks on planes will still be in force.
I'm hopeful that holidays abroad will be safe from quarantines etc by summer hols, though again might still need masks on the plane, which i can live with

DanielRicciardosSmile · 12/01/2021 19:46

I think possibly some children will be back at school after half term (ks1 and year 11 and 13 initially, with maybe year 6, 10 and 12 part way through the term) the rest not until after Easter.

LickEmbysmiling · 12/01/2021 19:46

Re Spanish flu which was much worse, didn't some immunity happen to the next generation?
How did that die out?.. I'm wondering that maybe the young will be OK, they are exposed and it will die out when they become adults?

FloraFocus · 12/01/2021 19:47

I'm going with May.

LickEmbysmiling · 12/01/2021 19:48

Regarding school, summer when they can spend more time outside, open windows, eat out, play out but with masks indoors and teachers getting vaccine.

Stovetopespresso · 12/01/2021 19:51

yes at least some easing over summer as per if this new strain aint all that bad

Newyearohdear · 12/01/2021 19:54

I really, really hope so. I think we have all become so numbed by the constant scaremongering and rule changes that there is no longer any clear, established path out of this situation. The government is trying to prevent deaths and keep us compliant by threatening harsher lockdown but I think they would do better saying “We all want this to end- stay home while we vaccinate as many as possible but, all being well, the end of March will be the end of lockdown forever and life can start to get back to normal.” We need some positive to hold on to!
