To want to go to Markies for picky bits

736 replies

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

@CharlotteRose90

Who the hell would call marks and Spencer’s markies 🤣🤣🤣. Wow
Says someone who hasn’t RTFT (or at least just the OP’s posts)!

The desire to immediately smash someone down on here is off-the-chart nuts at times. Not directed only at the post above, but also those on previous pages.

Many moons ago, I remember some advice I was given when heading into an exam. It was a practical “PA” type exam where you’re given an in-tray of work to get through. The advice was - read everything briefly first. This was because you could start the first “task” and then end up at “task 5” realising that the situation had changed, so you’d wasted time on task 1. Sounds daft, but it really does apply to real life. Read stuff first before wasting time posting stuff that had already been covered 😂

@MorrisZapp

It's Markie's in Aberdeen, always has been. Interesting fact is that the cash machine beside Markie's in Aberdeen pays out more than any other machine in Scotland.
Am assuming it’s the busiest ATM? However, if you mean it chucks out extra cash then I need to work out if it’s worth the 17 hour round trip!

@Lalliella. Rtft. Both words are used commonly in Scotland. I’m not a thicko or twee, or anything else of the sort.

Pressed too soon the term “Picky bits”deserves to be in room 101

HuckfromScandal · 10/01/2021 22:25

@Ihatefish - well ficking stay in whatever place you live, coz we in Scotland - don’t want you to come visit. And we will keep our beautiful country and our lovely dialects to ourselves.

@kleew1

Are you Scottish OP?
I’m in Glasgow and I’ve called m&s “markies” all my life! Didn’t realise it was a Scottish thing tho.
thisislovelyme · 10/01/2021 22:26

Wow the vipers are really over excited tonight. Is there not much else going on?

Markies and picky bits normal where I live too. But no I wouldn't go at the moment. Buy the finest you can and click and collect it.

Justajot · 10/01/2021 22:27

This is the juxtaposition I saw when I was clicking on this thread. I think it add perspective.

To want to go to Markies for picky bits
borntohula · 10/01/2021 22:27

I was in M&S today, along with a decent number of other murderers. Nothing i bought was 'essential,' I could have lived without it. I say go for it and ignore some of the pricks who have replied to your post. :)

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 22:27

Em... that was meant to say minter, not munter.

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 22:29

@Justajot. That it desparately sad. I won’t lie.

OP posts:
borntohula · 10/01/2021 22:30

@Justajot and some people on this thread might as well just come out and admit that they think anyone in ICU with covid brought it on themselves by leaving the house.

Agirlnamedsam · 10/01/2021 22:33

@Justajot the chances of me spreading it are close to zero because I’ve not been anywhere apart from walks since early December. All through the holidays my household kept completely to ourselves

@Ihatefish

The title of this thread seems to be written in the local dialect of some linguistic hell.
Aye well bide awa fae Scotland n yi winna hae ti hear it ken.
Bouledeneige · 10/01/2021 22:41

Wow. Why all the shit aimed at OP? Being locked up hasn't done much good to MN generosity of spirit. My good Scottish friend says Markies and I can't for the life of me get offended by it.

Go to M&S OP and get some pickie bits and ignore the witches.

I'm from Manchester but live in Scotland and whilst I haven't heard it called that it doesn't take a genius to work out what you meant. There are clearly so many obtuse idiots on here today, jumping on the bandwagon. It is bloody annoying when people use regional dialects and always get asked if you are either from up north (as if we live in the wilderness) or from Scotland. It passes me right off, my kids are Scottish and will grow up speaking differently to me doesn't mean they need to be judged for it!

In reference to your op I wouldn't make a special trip there but if you need bits you can go there just as you can any other supermarket.

WilsonMilson · 10/01/2021 22:53

@Markies @HuckfromScandal if you’re going for a chipper, it had better be the Ashvale!

nettie434 · 10/01/2021 22:54

I'd say go. You are unlikely to transmit the virus to other people and it's unlikely you will pick it up while you are out, especially if you go in a quiet period, eg early afternoon before the people shopping on their way home from work.

Of course you can buy Marks and Spencer food for home delivery via Ocado but Ocado might not be available in your area and good luck getting a slot at the moment.

I've lived in England my whole life and knew exactly what you meant. The chance to criticise the way someone writes AND define 'essential travel' is clearly a huge treat for some people on this thread.

Justajot · 10/01/2021 22:55

@borntohula - I certainly don't think that everyone in ICU brought it on themselves. People have to eat, people have to work. Some of the people in "Markies" will be buying their weekly shop. Some of them will be working there. Some will be ICU workers, they have to work and eat and inevitability bring risks out of hospitals to the world around them. But we can all cut the risks to others by minimising our trips out - like this one. Sadly there will be people in ICU that have "brought it on themselves", but they will be the minority by a very long way.

@Agirlnamedsam - I don't think you will give anyone covid. But the risk is that you catch it. Even then, you'd probably be ok and given that you are not mixing with many people, you probably wouldn't spread it to anyone. But you might - whether from needing medical treatment or next time you get your shopping.

It's all "might"s and "probably"s. The individual risks are so small but on a societal level it's like death by a thousand cuts.

Whatwouldnanado · 10/01/2021 22:58

Wow. Why so many bitchy responses to a perfectly innocent question. Marksies all the way where I am, and nothing rough about it! I was going to suggest that you get your picky tea stuff and then a week's worth of basics for the freezer which I see you've done. Enjoy OP.

MrsAmaretto · 10/01/2021 23:00

Yes @HuckfromScandal this thread is shocking from that respect. It was pointed out very early in the thread that this is a common term in Scottish dialect.
