CNN politics @cnnpolitics
The FBI has publicly acknowledged for the first time that it is considering keeping those who attacked the US Capitol last week from boarding planes by adding them to the federal no-fly list

GOP Rep. John Katko Says He Will Vote To Impeach Trump
Katko of New York is the first Republican House member to publicly back Democrats’ push to impeach the outgoing president.

Remarkable how quickly things can move and how credible impeachment and conviction of Trump may now be. Impeachment in the House is a certainty. McConnell indicating he’s receptive. Would need 17 GOP Senators of 50.

If it did happen, Trump would be the first President to be impeached and convicted in the history of the republic (would have likely happened to Nixon had he not resigned).

Still seems a tall order but the fact it’s even remotely credible is testament to how far things have moved in a very short space of time.

Brian Tyler Cohen @briantylercohen
BREAKING: Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) becomes the third Republican to vote for impeachment, following Reps. Cheney (R-WY) and Katko (R-NY).

Sinful8 · 13/01/2021 00:15

Its amazing how much quicker democracy moves when its the politicians at risk of being hurt isnt it?

Mittens030869 · 13/01/2021 00:17

The thing that's changed this is that the Republicans lost control of the Senate. And it's entirely Trump's fault for going on about himself rather than focusing on campaigning for the two actual candidates. Also, obviously, it will have led to some Republican voters not to vote at all. (Because if the electoral vote was rigged, why vote at all, they might think. Confused)

Trump has basically become a 'loser'.

maggiethecat · 13/01/2021 00:17

I don't trust Mitch. I think he's making necessary sounds to distance himself from Trump but will rely on there not being enough principled GOP senators to convict him.

He wants Trump cut from the party to save it but perhaps hopes that even without conviction enough Americans will be sufficiently repulsed by 6 Jan to kill off any viable future in the party.

Ain't that the truth!

Andrew Solender @andrewsolender
NEW: 6 GOP Reps (Fitzpatrick, Reed, Kim, Upton, Curtis, Meijer) introduce a censure resolution as an alternative to impeachment.

"Impeachment will almost certainly result in a 2nd acquittal of President Trump, which would even further divide and inflame tensions in our nation."

"A concurrent censure resolution with language nearly identical to the impeachment resolution introduced in the House is the only immediate, appropriate, and effective means for achieving this."

The censure resolution says Trump:

"Gravely endangered the security of the United States"

"Threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch of Government

"Betrayed his trust as President"

NotaRealLawyer · 13/01/2021 00:34

Blimey! Things are moving so fast now, it's difficult to keep up.
A censure on the table now too. Can't decide if that's helpful or not.
Interested in views on this, thanks.

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 00:38

I really really hope they gain a spine.

Its interesting as things seem to have a tendency to move when Trump is out of town.

And this all started the second he went to Texas with Graham...

I hope i wake to a list of 17 names. Maybe with McConnell amongst them.

But im not holding my breathe.

Good luck USA. I hope the GOP find courage. Finally.

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 00:39

Just a reflection: what would trump be tweeting now if he wasn't banned.

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 00:41

Afp News Agency @afp
#UPDATE US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cancelled his final official visit to Europe, while Washington's UN envoy scrapped a trip to Taiwan, officials said, as President Donald Trump faces an impeachment vote in Congress

Zebracat · 13/01/2021 00:41

I can’t believe I turned off CNN just as this all started . 20 Republican senators out of 50 seems a lot. I think censure ought to have happened already, but II don’t think it has the consequences of impeachment.
It’s just so interesting. I think there is lots more to come out here. I think there was a conspiracy with Trump at the heart of it, so I need to know if impeachment and a conviction, would protect him from criminal prosecution?

Zebracat · 13/01/2021 00:47

RTB, I know! Would love to be reading Trumps tweets and seeing him incriminate himself.. I’m so soft hearted that usually when baddies get their comeuppance I start to feel sorry for them and have to look away. Even Saddam Hussein and Osama bin laden. Even Margaret Thatcher. But I don’t think that’s happening this time.

FantasticButtocks · 13/01/2021 00:49

I was just going to suggest something here, but actually getting inside his head was just too sickening 🤮

Kaitlin collins @kaitlincollins
In a new letter, Pence tells Pelosi he won’t invoke the 25th Amendment. While the move was seen as incredibly unlikely, he had not put out a definitive statement until now.

NotaRealLawyer · 13/01/2021 00:55

Tweet? How about...
"So many fine people have told me at the Alamo that my Great Wall is so Great. It's greater than China's not so Great, Great Wall.
Patriots, We love you. Stand by any Wall to Turn on, Tune in, Drop out. Be Heroes not Zeroes "

Pence against impeachment...

NotaRealLawyer · 13/01/2021 00:55

Pence is such a wet lettuce, no surprise there.

thecatfromjapan · 13/01/2021 01:00

Given that he was pretty much calling on the faithful to go after Pence, I'd expect him to be identifying individual Republican targets now - and covertly intimidating the others back into line.

But even that seems a bit weak. Trump's Twitter statements always seemed to go further than you thought was possible.

So, heaven knows.

Invoking crazy conspiracy theories as to why there's even talk of impeachment seems very likely.

thecatfromjapan · 13/01/2021 01:03

And, of course, Trump tweeting now is a counter factual. Twitter pulling the plug was a big deal, and very disempowering, for many reasons.

It's a huge part of his delegitimisation.

If it hadn't happened, Trump would feel a lot bolder, in a far stronger position. And probably would be in a stronger position.

So it's actually quite alarming to think what he would be tweeting now.

thecatfromjapan · 13/01/2021 01:04

That's unfortunate about Pence.

I really hoped the fact that Trump's mob we're looking for him might swing him. ☹️

dreamingbohemian · 13/01/2021 01:06

It doesn't really matter if House Republicans vote to impeach, the Democrats have the votes anyway.

The question is whether you can get 17 Senate Republicans to convict and I think that's very unlikely.
