@BlueCatRedCat

I like Trae Crowder a lot, DGRossetti , he's been on Bill Maher a couple of times. Think Bill is back this Friday. He should be feeling very vindicated, he always described the Trump administration as a slow moving coup.

On a totally separate note relating to something mentioned up thread, clearly I have been living under a rock, as I had no idea about the Melania body double thing, I've just looked it up. WTF? Why? And exactly who is paying for them for their act and to be protected by secret service? Can you imagine the collective conservative head explosion if Michelle Obama had pulled a stunt like this? It's not just Donald who has been given a free pass. Melania really has nothing to complain about, and as to her bleating about "salacious gossip" - that's rich coming from a birther.

Oh I love the Melania body double controversy. It's so ridiculous!

I mean, in the most recent instances, it is so very obviously not her. And everyone just pretends not to notice?

It's small potatoes in the big scheme of things but it so perfectly captures how dumb and exhausting the last four years have been.

Mittens030869 · 12/01/2021 19:01

He could never live down the line 'Peace in our time'.

Dongdingdong · 12/01/2021 19:03

Whenever I see the words "Deutsche Bank", they translate in my head as "douche bag". Another bit of corporate virtue signalling and dodgy deals cover up. Why have they been propping up this multiple bankrupt all these years?

Indeed. Whatever your thoughts on Trump, an establishment like Deutsche Bank attempting to take the moral high ground is a bit rich IMO.

Mittens030869 · 12/01/2021 19:04

Anyway, whatever we can say about Churchill (and Chamberlain), neither of them ever tried to overturn the result of a free election. Despite what must have been a very big shock to Churchill, losing heavily in 1945.

DGRossetti · 12/01/2021 19:04

@user1471565182

Convincing the public Churchill was a decent wartime strategic leader is the best thing he ever pulled off. I dont deny he had some good wualities in the job but he failed constantly with ideas that shouldnt have come out of his head in the first place and forced the army to try them.
Even in this thread, it's clear that there are some people that don't - for whatever reason - realise or acknowledge that two British Citizens - say one born in Britain, and one born in India (possibly one of Kamala Harris grandparents) who might have completely differing and valid views about W.S. Churchill - or indeed any preceding British Prime Minister.

Unless we are going down the road of suggesting that some British citizens opinions are more valid than others ? In which case you can go alone, because I ain't following you.

In fact chamberlein mostly felll because of churchills fuck ups in the admiralty.
Chamberlain was terminally ill when he stepped down. He died in Nov 1940.
TurquoiseBaubles · 12/01/2021 19:07

Where can I read about the body double conspiracy. Google isn't helping much, and it sounds fascinating Grin

Personally I think he knew war was imminent and acted to give the UK a chance to start to rearm. He knew he would be vilified for it, but being a politician of honour, didn't care.

The reason we can't see it like that is because we have never experience a politician with honour in our lifetimes.

He was the ideal man for the job. Hitler already believed he'd fooled him once, so was quite ready to believe he could do it again.

If Britain had acted in 1938 we would probably have lost. Bearing in mind we only didn't lose by the skin of our teeth in 1940.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 12/01/2021 19:11

Watch trump supporters channel 4 news- denying it was a riot, stating it was peaceful.

terrywynne · 12/01/2021 19:19

I think most of us accept that people around us are complex. We know we can be kind people but also feel irrational jealous. We know there are instances where the upstanding businessman turns out to be a domestic abuser etc etc. I don't understand why there is thus blind spot when it comes to people in the past - that they must be good or bad. People havent changed much! They were complex in history too. Someone can be the right person for one situation and terrible in another (just like you can be great at one job and terrible if put in another role).

See also the great wartime spirit myth. Yes, war (any of them) brings out stories of selflessness and communities joining together. But the judgy neighbour down the road type existed in the past too and was judgy even during a war. The criminal gangs still exploited the situation. The bored teens still vandalised/got drunk etc. No generation has ever been uniquely better or worse. Which is also a depressing thought if you would like to see certain behaviours and attitudes go away...

The only thing I'll miss from this administration is them swapping in new Melanias and just pretending we won't notice like a 4-year-old with a guppy

There's a lot about it on Youtube, TurqoiseBaubles , just search "Melania body double" . As dreamingbohemian says, 2 are just obvious fakes. One of them looks about 6 inches shorter than her! Another one smiles, which is a dead giveaway Grin
knittingaddict · 12/01/2021 19:21

Hmm, I don't think the Melania double is a real thing is it. Just her on a bad day.

dreamingbohemian · 12/01/2021 19:22

Basically Fauxlania is shorter, actually smiles and holds Trump's hand, and has completely different teeth and jawline.

Destinysdaughter · 12/01/2021 19:30

Ok I know this isn't realistic, but the 2 sides seem so intractable and hostile to each other, could America become ungovernable, and is Partition the only solution...?

BruceAndNosh · 12/01/2021 19:38

It's taken a few days, but Trump has finally remembered he has a Press office he can use instead of twitter. His "remarks" ( I guess the WH can't use the more accurate word Ramblings) leaving white house and again at airport are now on the WH website

Quite frankly, I'm not sure there are two equivalent sides here.

Rather, a fairly small but very noisy and violent minority. We need to foster the middle ground. But also challenge the middle ground to impose limits on the extremists, particularly when important lines are crossed. What happened in the Capitol, and the constant denial of the election result are such two lines.

I do wonder if the Trump supporters that show up in the news are representative. Shame on the media to give them voices. Where are the every day former supporters who don't support these antics? The polls suggest they exist.

I don't think it was a shock. He said something along the lines of not being good at producing a good election manifesto in peacetime.
Roussette · 12/01/2021 20:08

FBI and DOJ due to give a press conference shortly

MoodyMarshall · 12/01/2021 20:11

@Witchend

My auntie once asked my gran why everyone had suddenly voted Labour in 1945. My nan (usually a liberal) said that it was because everyone was petrified that Churchill would send his men to war in the Far East, and they voted to prevent further war.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 12/01/2021 20:20

I've not thought much about the body double thing, but I suppose I'm late to the party in remarking on how like Melania Don Jr's partner=wife/girlfriend looks? Or is it just me?

boatyardblues · 12/01/2021 20:28

I’m watching the FBI/DOJ press conference. The DOJ guy sounds coked up - breathe and s l o w down man. DOJ obviously prickly about the criticism about charging for minor offences. The FBI guy was less breathless.
