There are still some people alive in Britain who spent several years of their childhood living through WW2. My DM, now 91, remembers flying bombs overhead, and her area of S London had its share of bombs. One landed in a nearby street - god knows how awful that must have been. We Babyboomers knew that without Churchill, the outcome of the war could have been very different.
I doubt my DM and her peers would have been aware of Churchill's earlier career. What they did know is that he brought an end to their terror.
So celebrating 50 years since his funeral serves as a reminder to my cohort, and also likely means more to those of my DM's generation who are still alive.
(however I have to say I didn't know 50 years since Churchill's funeral had been celebrated)
