The authorities can't have it all ways: that NBC news article mentioned a report suggesting that "the mass event (which will be held in the National Mall and outside the Capitol) is likely to spark street violence, some of which may be lethal, between Antifa and Trump supporters or far-right groups."

Was there in fact any of that, or did "Antifa" (whoever the hell that is supposed to be) stay away?

Incidentally, that's another foreign word: it's short for the German prewar organisation antifaschistisch, short for Antifaschistische Aktion (1932–1933). Came back in when Trump or one of his handlers coined it for a catch-all boo-word in 2017.

People forget and move on scarily fast. I see it with the anti-vax movement too. People in western countries increasingly have no direct experience of measles and polio epidemics that killed their family members and friends so they don't fear the disease and can make comments about how people survived in the past without vaccines.

Well, there is a slightly Darwinist aspect to all this. Thick peoples kids will die and we will thin out any genetic tendency towards low energy critical thinking.

It's a comedy sci-fi film where the premise is that people of higher IQ are likely to have children later in life (due to attending higher education and establishing a career before procreating) whereas people with a lower IQ will have children younger and therefore more of them. As the "stupid" people breed at a faster rate than the "clever" people at some point in the future the balance will tip and the "stupid" will far outnumber the "clever".

In the film the main character (played by Luke Wilson) is an "average American" soldier selected to take part in a top secret project that sees him frozen and woken up 500 years later where society is so stupid that he is now the most intelligent person in the world.

Sometimes I think its more of a warning than a comedy!

I've not really seen much these past few years that suggest many people in power - US or UK - have anything else on their agenda. Certainly not the well being of the country and/or their constituents.

There is no good way out for someone in Pence's position.

The long-term lieutenant to the cult leader can either stand by his man and go down with the cult leader; or he can redeem himself at the last minute and take the cult leader out – and then himself be taken out by the mob. When the mob has been in the same building shouting "hang Mike Pence" and has erected a gallows outside, that's moved on a bit from "taking out" just meaning losing his career.

I suppose it's possible that Pence has found god in the last few days – the New Testament one who loves people and sacrifices himself, rather than the OT one who just smites, tests and punishes them.

I'm pretty sure that is an old clip @Roussette. Bizzarely I've just been listening to my West Wing podcast - which I often do while I work - and I'm pretty certain that they just played an identical clip in the podcast which was recorded in 2017 as a comparison between Trump and Bartlett.
