Pence is probably one of the Proud Boys' biggest targets.

I have to agree with @mathanxiety’s assessment of US military personnel in generic terms. DH is ex-RAF and through his career had a lot of dealings with USAF personnel, particularly as where we live there are two large USAF bases within 20 miles of our home (Michelle Obama being allegedly spotted at the local petrol station a number of years ago really set the local Facebook page alight!)

I digress, there is definitely an attitude amongst a lot (not all I hasten to add) of US military of “I do as I’m told” and “I’m not paid to think”, even amongst the junior officer ranks. By way of comparison a UK junior officer would be expected to take on a lot more responsibility than his/her US counterpart.

As a result I suspect an awful lot of them have trouble adjusting to life outside the military - when you’ve been told what to wear, what to eat, how to think, even how to cut your hair for the last 20 years, suddenly being out in the big wide world must be incredibly daunting and many will seek the familiarity of similar organisations like security work, the police, etc. They often surround themselves with like minded individuals and it’s very easy for a “us versus them” attitude to develop.

In the UK, the anti-radicalisation scheme "Prevent" does specifically train about warning signs of white supremacy and far right radicalisation. Too many people think radicalisation is a Muslim problem and ignore the very obvious risks to all groups. If someone is vulnerable in any way, they can be manipulated.

There was an excellent series on Channel 4 years ago, about an Asian family. The son was in intelligence service whilst his sister was being radicalised. It ended very ambiguously. Either she detonated the suicide bomb and killed them both, or her brother embracing her prevented her from detonating, we don't know. I think it was called "Brits". Very interesting show.

I've watched a documentary about torture that mentioned how US military abroad got trained to think of us vs the enemy, with torture being normalised. With so many deployed to war sets over the last few decades, most will have experienced the enemy concept, and will transport it to their "civilian" jobs. It explains to some extent the knees on necks.
It's not surprising how many end up in security related jobs, if nothing else because it's more related to their expertise. This concept should be challenged, though. The police shouldn't be like the military at all.

merrymouse · 10/01/2021 10:06

I’m concerned about what happens in 6 months when Hannity and Ingraham are ranting about the latest conspiracy theory/socialist outrage.

It’s also likely that Biden will make a genuine miss-step, because all politicians do at some point.

I’m concerned that the MAGA crowd will understand lack of action against Trump as tacit endorsement.

CaveMum · 10/01/2021 10:07

I should add that adjusting to civilian life is obviously not just a problem for the US military. There’s a reason why suicide rates are so high amongst veterans - some of them find it incredibly hard to get used to the change, particularly for those who serve their whole working lives and see the military as their “family”.

They are very hot on it in the UK, when DH left the RAF this time last year (after 20 years), he had a long lead in time (effectively handed in his notice a year before he left) where he had courses to attend (come compulsory, some voluntary) to talk through the adjustment to civilian life, how to look for a new job, CV writing, etc, as well as access to a grant of up to £2,000 to attend outside training courses to gain new skills.

My point is that I don’t know what kind of support US veterans get (I’m guessing very little from the state), and lack of support means that vulnerable people will fall through the gaps.

I know, coincidently through my West Wing obsession, that Melissa Fitzgerald (who played CJ’s assistant Carol) now heads up a not-for-profit called Justice For Vets which helps support veterans who have fallen on hard times.

I forgot to mention the other night while listening to the Americast podcast, that Jon Sopel mentioned a Senator who is going to become pivotal over the next 2 years. He’s a conservative Democrat from, I think they said, West Virginia, and they basically said expect to see a lot of effort from both sides of the aisle in courting him to vote with “their side” and even a few expensive infrastructure projects/investments suddenly springing up in his state Wink #porkbarrel

JamieLeesCurtains · 10/01/2021 10:19

Joe Manchin?

lionheart · 10/01/2021 10:23

As an aside, Kamala Harris is on the February cover of Vogue but the picture is not great. It is also not the pic that was agreed on ... lots of interesting debate on social media about representations of non-white women etc.

@RedToothBrush

I can't tell you how many people are writing to remind me that the Proud Boys' leader was at the White House on the very day Trump excitedly tweeted about the January 6 rally. If this timeline is correct, we now have a terrifying synchronicity.

Don't you recall there was a least one journalist who said that the white house 'was in touch' with the rioters at the Capitol Building on the day?

I posted about it.

I fear things are a lot lot worse than people realise and i am really starting to fear what will happen on the 20th.

There is an army who want to storm DC and kill the incoming president and all elected officials.

They are now emboldened, pissed off and realise they weren't organised enough.

I have a VERY VERY bad feeling about it all.

That paragraph is very much echoing what has been stated on these threads.

I also have a VERY VERY bad feeling about it all.

CaveMum · 10/01/2021 10:23

@JamieLeesCurtains

Joe Manchin?
It might be, I’d have to listen back to the whole podcast to get the name - I may also have totally made up West Virginia as I was listening in bed!
BlueCatRedCat · 10/01/2021 10:33

Apologies if this has already been posted. A conversation between 3 PBS reporters - all women - about what they saw during the riot, from their respective positions inside and outside the Capitol and at the White House. Reporters who have consistently put up with the threats and fake news rhetoric of Trump and his acolytes have my admiration, particularly the female reporters and anyone not white, who have to put up with the misogyny, racism and threats of bodily harm as well.

RedToothBrush · 10/01/2021 10:33

Ive read a fair amount of books on accounts of 20th Century Battles for both UK and US soliders.

This contrast in training is really apparent and striking.

RedToothBrush · 10/01/2021 10:37

Im also willing to put money on Biden having had several long conversations with Mike Pence including about security going forwards as a fellow former VP.

BlueCatRedCat · 10/01/2021 10:37

I also have a VERY VERY bad feeling about it all.

I really do not think what happened could have happened without inside information and/or assistance.

The US Capitol Riot Was Even More Violent And Terrifying Than It First Looked

redcandlelight · 10/01/2021 10:42

wrt military: I spent a year in us working as an au pair and studying.
I got a letter from military recruitment (don't remember the details, was 25 years ago) inviting me to take the fitness test. the letter said that if I passed I could get expedited for citizenship and join.
I wish I kept this letter now...

TheABC · 10/01/2021 10:57

The only consolation is that if we - outsiders on the internet - can see the potential for violence on the 20th - so can the Secret Service and FBI. Whoever is running the show can legitimately argue for more resources, compared to normal years.

I think there needs to be public consequences for Trump, otherwise the alt-right (and future leaders) will see rebellion as a risk-free option. The Republicans are desperate for it to blow over, hence the appeasement letter about "bringing America together" that appeared on CNN/independent. After feeding the tiger for 4 years, there's always the risk it will eat you.

@BlueCatRedCat that article links to the consideration of insider involvement

Really interesting comments on the military, mathanxiety.

And from mypathtriedtokillme thanks for posting that from Scalzi.

Now I’m not American and wouldn’t claim to know much about US culture apart from what I read. But apart from the more sinister and overtly violent aspects, that mob looked like a ginormous frat party, if one in the grip of a middle-age crisis. One of the links previously mentioned a “weed room”. I believe there’s a party culture in the US that is based round wild and uncontrolled behaviour in the young, but in a quasi-controlled manner, as in Spring Break, which seems to be celebrated in both visual and written media as a rite of passage. It’s a different sort of thing to house parties and (what used to be called) raves in this country.
Perhaps this goes some way to explaining the apparent puzzlement of many of the participants at the realisation they committed actual crimes. To them it was just a sort of party with the added fun and thrill of sticking one to the Establishment in a very significant way.

On another note... good news that Parler, as of today, has no platform. Google, Apple and now Amazon have washed their hands of them.

I would be bitterly disappointed if the worlds scam merchants hadn't gotten their malware infected variants ready for people to download from dodgy sites and sideload into their Fruity Fondleslabs etc, to be pwned by the Russians and Chinese.

Of course if you warned them of that danger, they'd claim that you were "one of them ..." Grin
