I had assumed worse case scenario would be summer term...but it was pointed out to me tonight that if vaccinations are slow in rolling out, it could quite conceivably be September.

Thoughts?

No way. After Feb half-term for primaries, Easter for secondaries is my prediction. Reopening schools is a priority this time in a way it wasn’t last time.

Norwayreally · 08/01/2021 22:20

College tutor here. I’m on mat leave but still kept in the loop via colleagues. They’re not expecting college students to return before September, especially given the fact exams have been cancelled.

I’d imagine primary and secondary will return sooner though but I doubt it’ll be next month. I think after Easter.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 08/01/2021 22:20

Schools are more open now than back in the spring lock down despite having a higher death rate.

HeyBaby2020 · 08/01/2021 22:21

All staff in my school just want all kids back in the school now! It’s not working how it is for us

TwoZeroTwoZero · 08/01/2021 22:21

Oh dear God I hope not. The longer the schools are closed, the longer I go without being able to work and therefore the less money we have as a family.

Toocold · 08/01/2021 22:22

Feb half term, they said schools will be the first to open and they’ll want to get the economy going again, it might be just primaries to start with though. I don’t understand the NHS reference, they don’t decide on schools.

Turmericpie · 08/01/2021 22:22

@TartanLassie

Why the fuck is this not in the Covid Secrion. Some of us don't want to see your doom and gloom in the title!!

Please Mnet HQ moves this ASAP! Some of us are trying to look after our mental health!!!!

I am SO sorry. I rarely post or come onto Mumsnet. I didn't even know there was a Covid section.

I really apologise. I don't mean to make you feel bad.

DH is a secondary SLT. His school is planning to teach online until Easter.

itsgettingweird · 08/01/2021 22:23

Over Gavins dead body!

Although that may make him more effective..... 🤔🤣

gingganggooleywotsit · 08/01/2021 22:24

Thanks for ruining my evening op what an awful thought. I sincerely hope not.

Muminho · 08/01/2021 22:24

No chance for February. Look at the numbers - nearly 70k cases today. The last lockdown was better observed and it still took 3 months to get the thing under control. But if the vaccine roll out is successful I'm hopeful for a return after Easter.

shinynewapple2021 · 08/01/2021 22:26

No I don't think it will go on for that long . I think some people just like to look at worse case scenarios .

B33Fr33 · 08/01/2021 22:26

As much as I would rather keep my children at home whilst the rates are high, as much as I quite enjoy our schooling at home pattern. I really hope not. I stepped down from my job (care) the first time round for the benefit of my children. Now I'm really starting to feel the full weight of the lack of value of a non working non productive member of society. I miss my work, worry about my old clients and being useful. I'd quite like some more money and to not be co.oletely reliant on my husband's income. This lockdown is really hard. My middle child is STILL waiting on a referral for counselling, my eldest losing faith in her educational abilities and my youngest misses his friends. I can't see us making it to September in one piece. I am very scared. We care not resilient enough.

CakeQueen87 · 08/01/2021 22:26

If it follows the same pattern as last time, I think there will be a partial opening of primary schools (reception, Y1 and Y6) a couple of weeks after half term. With all of primary back after Easter. I could see them doing something different with secondary and certainly colleges and universities.

gingganggooleywotsit · 08/01/2021 22:27

@MrsMiaWallis my sister is a nurse and she has heard nothing of the sort.

FarTooSkinny · 08/01/2021 22:29

Meh. They are only children

MrsMiaWallis · 08/01/2021 22:30

@FarTooSkinny

Meh. They are only children
Tell that to my teens.
ConfusedcomMum · 08/01/2021 22:30

No because the infection rates don't tend to be as high in the summer (highly likely to end up being seasonal).

Have various family members at all levels plus many friends who work at local hospitals and haven't heard this from any of them!

QueenofLouisiana · 08/01/2021 22:34

We are planning to teach online until Easter, but really hoping for February half term.

Daphnise · 08/01/2021 22:35

At least September. Maybe all year if the vaccinations don't go to plan or are found not to work as well predicted.

Blubellsarebells · 08/01/2021 22:35

Absolutely no way will they be closed until september.
Im planning on easter at the latest, y6 ds.
Some went back in june last year and the lockdown started later, admittedly we are starting this one from a worse position but we have the vaccine now.

TartanLassie · 08/01/2021 22:36

@Turmericpie now you've made me cry for being so nice. I'm sorry too.

Just come onto Mnet for a bit of light relief, I shouldn't have lashed out. I'm sorry.

toptreeroots1 · 08/01/2021 22:36

😂 It wasn't a year last time and we didn't have any vaccines.

lljkk · 08/01/2021 22:36

I believe September is best guess. June is possible, too.
