Who gets to decide that the events were an attempted coup / revolution?
Once upon a time, the dictionary. But we've progressed to that Brave New World where words are merely a load of letters jumbled up.
Generally a coup is replacing the existing leader by force.
A revolution is replacing the existing system with a new one.
So 1776 was a Revolution (in theory it should be called a rebellion if you are British, but that's another example of the winners writing history).
So "coup" seems about right to me.
Worth nothing the "force" needed to replace the leader doesn't need to be overwhelming. Or even exist. It just needs to be able to scare the incumbents into giving up power.
History is always your friend ...
